Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a food bacterium with strong pathogenicity which causes infections via the gastrointestinal tract. Mechanisms by which gut microbiota (GM) resist microbial infections have received little attention. Eight-week-old mice were orally inoculated with wild-type Lm EGD-e and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) employed. GM richness and diversity of infected mice changed rapidly within 24h. Firmicutes class decreased and Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes and Ruminococcaceae increased significantly. Coprococcus, Blautia and Eubacterium also increased on the 3rd day post-infe

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic and debilitating disease that represents a leading cause of disability among middle-aged and elderly individuals. With the aging population, the incidence of OA and its associated socioeconomic burden is increasing; however, the underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. Based on the "gut-bone axis" theory, this study systematically characterized the gut microbiota of patients with OA to identify potential biological targets for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: Fecal samples from 32 OA patients and 26 healthy controls were analyzed for gut b

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver disease (CLD) and its progression to compensated cirrhosis (CC), decompensated cirrhosis (DC), and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) represent a global health crisis with high mortality. The "gut-liver axis" plays a pivotal role in this progression, yet a systematic characterization of the dynamic microbial evolution across the entire disease spectrum remains elusive. We aimed to systematically characterize the gut microbiota's dynamic evolution across the spectrum of chronic liver disease and to develop machine-learning models for predicting its critical transiti

The primary purpose of the present study was to compare the microbial profiles of the tongue dorsa of healthy subjects and subjects with halitosis by using culture-independent molecular methods. Our overall goal was to determine the bacterial diversity on the surface of the tongue dorsum as part of our ongoing efforts to identify all cultivable and not-yet-cultivated species of the oral cavity. Tongue dorsum scrapings were analyzed from healthy subjects with no complaints of halitosis and subjects with halitosis, defined as an organoleptic score of 2 or more and volatile sulfur compound levels

Twenty-three patients with anaerobic infections of the lung were treated with either two antibiotics, clindamycin and gentamicin (11 patients) or with a single antibiotic, carbenicillin (12 patients). Cultures were obtained prior to therapy, either by transtracheal needle aspiration (17 patients) or thoracocentesis (six patients). Anaerobic bacteria were found in all. Fifteen patients had aerobic and facultative bacteria in addition. The anerobic isolates were peptostreptococci (12), peptococci (12), Bacteroides organisms (eight), clostridia (three), actinomycetes (two), eubacteria (one), and

Flavonifractor plautii (formerly Eubacterium plautii) is a Gram-variable, strict anaerobic bacillus that forms part of the human gut microbiome, although its role in human health remains incompletely understood. F. plautii has rarely been linked to clinical infections. We describe a case of bacteremia in a patient with severe intrahepatic biliary ductal dilatation and septic shock and F. plautii bacteremia, which cleared following treatment with ceftriaxone and metronidazole. Diarrhea with disruption of the gut barrier and subsequent bacterial translocation appear to be the mechanism for bacte

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events. The microbiota-gut-brain axis has been suggested to play an important role in mental health. Here we analyzed information on trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms with the gut microbiome data and dietary information in 191 individuals enrolled in a substudy of an ongoing longitudinal cohort of women. We demonstrated that higher PTSD symptom levels were associated with less adherence to the Mediterranean diet pattern, and this association was also linked to s

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition caused by polymicrobial infection. The inflammation is initiated at the gingiva (gingivitis) and then extends to the alveolar bone, leading to tooth loss (periodontitis). Previous studies have shown differences in bacterial composition between periodontal healthy and diseased sites. However, bacterial metabolic activities during the health-to-periodontitis microbiome shift are still inadequately understood. This study was performed to investigate the bacterial characteristics of healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis statuses through metatranscr

Strains of a Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and immotile bacterium were isolated from broiler chicken caecal content. The isolates required strict anaerobic conditions for growth, formed spores, were catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. They produced butyrate as the major metabolic end product in reinforced clostridial medium broth. The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolated strains was 32.5-34.6 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 FAME, C14 : 0 FAME, C19 : 0CYC 9,10DMA and C16 : 0DMA. The fatty acid composition of the cell wall showed no similarity to any strain in the midi

Cervical and vaginal smears in 300 women using (a) intrauterine devices (IUD) and in 300 age matched control subjects (b), have been examined. In women using IUD, endometrial cells have been observed also in the second half of menstrual cycle, conversely these cells are present in women belonging to the control group, just in the first half of the cycle. Pattern of cervico-vaginitis due to Chlamydiae, Actinomyces and Eubacteria have been observed in higher percentage in women IUD wearers 58% of (a) group and 19.3% of (b) group (P less than 0.005). These patterns have often been characterized b

The human vagina is lined by stratified squamous epithelium which has no glands. Major components of the vaginal secretions are transudate through the vaginal walls, desquamating epithelial cells, cervical mucus, fluids from the upper genital tract, and leukocytes. Estrogens and sexual stimulation are examples of factors which increase vaginal fluid. Major organic constituents of the vaginal fluid are proteins, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. Organic acids arise as metabolic byproducts of vaginal bacterial flora, cause the vaginal odor, and show cyclic changes except in oral contraceptive user

Tonsilloliths are a potential cause of oral malodor. In this study, microbial profiles and composition of tonsilloliths were determined using culture-independent molecular methods and scanning electron microscopy. 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial genes (16S rDNAs) isolated from tonsilloliths of 6 individuals were amplified by PCR and cloned into Escherichia coli. Partial 16S rDNA sequences of approximately 600 bases of cloned inserts were used to determine species identity by comparison with sequences of known species. Characteristics of bacteria on the surface and inside the tonsillolith were anal

The potential interaction between certain antibiotics and digoxin has been discussed in the literature; however, few cases of actual erythromycin-induced digoxin toxicity have been reported. We present a case in which an 86-year-old woman who was taking digoxin 0.25 mg/d developed probably digoxin toxicity after the administration of erythromycin for the treatment of otitis media and streptococcal pharyngitis. Her digoxin concentration increased from a trough of 1.9 to 5.1 nmol/L six days after the erythromycin was started. Digoxin was discontinued and restarted approximately six weeks later w

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is characterized by unexplained debilitating fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, gastrointestinal disturbances, and orthostatic intolerance. Here, we report a multi-omic analysis of a geographically diverse cohort of 106 cases and 91 healthy controls that revealed differences in gut microbiome diversity, abundances, functional pathways, and interactions. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Eubacterium rectale, which are both recognized as abundant, health-promoting butyrate producers in the human gut, were reduced in ME/CFS. Functional metag

Recent investigations of the human subgingival oral flora based on ribosomal 16S cloning and sequencing have shown many of the bacterial species present to be novel species or phylotypes. The purpose of the present investigation was to identify potential periodontal pathogens among these newly identified species and phylotypes. Species-specific ribosomal 16S primers for PCR amplification were developed for detection of new species. Associations with chronic periodontitis were observed for several new species or phylotypes, including uncultivated clones D084 and BH017 from the Deferribacteres p

Barley hay (BH), characterized by high crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and various bioactive compounds, is hypothesized to optimize ruminal microbiota and enhance systemic immune responses in sheep. This study assessed how the graded substitution of traditional forage with BH impacts ruminal fermentation, microbiota composition, and blood immune and antioxidant status in sheep. Forty-five male Dorper × Small-tailed Han crossbred lambs (aged 110 ± 10 days, BW 33.93 ± 1.11 kg) were stratified into five cohorts (n = 9 each), including a control (CON) and four experimental groups (BH25, BH
