Visual short-term memory during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) was probed while observers performed smooth pursuit eye movements. Smooth pursuit keeps a moving object stabilized in the fovea. VSTM capacity for position was reduced during smooth pursuit compared with a condition with eye fixation. There was no difference between a condition in which the items were approximately stabilized on the retina because they moved with the pursuit target and a condition in which the items moved across the retina because they were stationary in space. The reduction of capacity for position was eliminated when miniature items were prese

The flash-lag phenomenon: object motion and eye movements.

An object flashed briefly in a given location, the moment another moving object arrives in the same location, is perceived by observers as lagging behind the moving object (flash-lag effect). Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of the moving object is rendered stationary by smooth pursuit of the moving object? Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of a stationary object is caused to move by smooth-pursuit eye movements? A disk was briefly flashed in the center of a moving ring such that the ring center was completely 'filled' by the disk. In this display, observ

A signal analysis method for impulse-like eye movements.

Eye movement investigations are performed in several fields of medicine. We have developed signal analysis methods of eye movements studied in otoneurology for several years. Previously, we have designed methods for eye movement types of saccades, nystagmus, smooth pursuit, and vestibulo-ocular reflex. In this paper we extend and develop further our method to concern also impulse-like eye movements, i.e. a new type of eye movement tests for investigations of vertiginous patients. According to our preliminary results the use of our method is efficient to differentiate patients with inner ear di

Eye movements during torso rotations in labyrinthine-defective subjects.

The aim of this study was to examine whether the chronic loss of vestibular function modifies perceptual and oculomotor responses during torso rotations in darkness. Subjects (4 patients with complete vestibular loss and 7 healthy volunteers) were seated on a rotating chair. Stimuli consisted of sinusoidal chair rotations (+/-30 degrees, 0.1 Hz and 0.011 Hz). We used 2 conditions: space stationary head (neck stimulation) and space stationary head and shoulders (torso stimulation). Horizontal eye deviations and slow component of eye movements were analysed. The results showed that eye movements

Autosomal recessive ataxia, slow eye movements and psychomotor retardation.

Two consanguineous Arab families with an autosomal recessive form of hereditary ataxia with slow eye movements and psychomotor retardation are reported. The ataxia presented in the first decade, was severely disabling and was associated with a spectrum of eye movements abnormalities as well as psychomotor retardation and sensory neuropathy. MRI studies of the brain showed a significant degree of cerebellar and brainstem atrophy. These 2 families support a previous report of a similarly affected consanguineous Arab family. The syndrome of autosomal recessive ataxia and slow or even absent sacca

[Tracing eye movements in various types of stroboscopic stimulation].

Relationship between eye ability to perceive smooth motion under stroboscopic stimulation on forward motion (from which stationary positions of the object) in the plane perpendicular to the look line was found. For diagnostics and occupational selection it is suggested to carry out stimulation in several directions thus obtaining additional information about the visual system of the person under test.

[Systematic deviations of saccadic eye movements in Wallenberg syndrome].

A patient suffering from lateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg's syndrome) is presented, exhibiting a striking bias of all saccadic eye movements toward the side of the lesion. Oculographic tracings demonstrate this oculomotor disorder. Other disturbances of ocular motility which resemble this one superficially are discussed. Interruption of fixation leads to a gliding movement veeringly to the side of the infarction. Since all saccades generated under different circumstances are affected, it is contemplated where the pathological signal is intruded into the prenuclear level, to adulterate

Impaired Inhibitory Control of Saccadic Eye Movements in Cervical Dystonia: An Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of cervical dystonia is still unclear. Recent evidence points toward a network disorder affecting several brain areas. The objective of this study was to assess the saccadic inhibition as a marker of corticostriatal function in cervical dystonia. METHODS: We recruited 31 cervical dystonia patients and 17 matched healthy controls. Subjects performed an overlap prosaccade, an antisaccade, and a countermanding task on an eye tracker to assess automatic visual response and response inhibition. RESULTS: Cervical dystonia patients made more premature saccades (P = 0

Role of the human supplementary eye field in the control of saccadic eye movements.

The precise function of the supplementary eye field (SEF) is poorly understood. Although electrophysiological and functional imaging studies are important for demonstrating when SEF neurones are active, lesion studies are critical to establish the functions for which the SEF is essential. Here we report a series of investigations performed on an extremely rare individual with a highly focal lesion of the medial frontal cortex. High-resolution structural imaging demonstrated that his lesion was confined to the region of the left paracentral sulcus, the anatomical locus of the SEF. Behavioural t

Subclinical involvement of eye movements detected by video-based eye tracking in myasthenia gravis.

BACKGRO UND: Ocular abnormalities in myasthenia gravis (MG) are characterized by severely limited movements and rapid saccades. Data about eye motility of MG patients whose ocular movements are apparently normal are lacking. Our study assessed the eye movement parameters in MG patients without clinical eye motility dysfunctions and investigated the effects of neostigmine administration on the eye motility in these patients. MATERIALS: In this longitudinal study, we screened all patients diagnosed with MG referring to the Neurologic Clinic of the University of Catania between October 1, 2019,

Eye tracking detects disconjugate eye movements associated with structural traumatic brain injury and concussion.

Disconjugate eye movements have been associated with traumatic brain injury since ancient times. Ocular motility dysfunction may be present in up to 90% of patients with concussion or blast injury. We developed an algorithm for eye tracking in which the Cartesian coordinates of the right and left pupils are tracked over 200 sec and compared to each other as a subject watches a short film clip moving inside an aperture on a computer screen. We prospectively eye tracked 64 normal healthy noninjured control subjects and compared findings to 75 trauma subjects with either a positive head computed

Isometric force development in human horizontal eye muscles and pulleys during saccadic eye movements.

PURPOSE: The connective tissue elements forming the check ligaments and portals of the human eye muscles have recently been ascribed with a pulley function. Active positioning of the pulleys over orbital layer contraction during eye movements has been suggested. Other studies have instead demonstrated fibrous tissue connections between all parts of the muscle and the pulleys. We aimed to compare the isometric force developed at the muscle tendon and at the pulleys of the horizontal eye muscles, and to investigate which eye muscle structures might exert force on the pulleys. METHODS: Isometric

Degeneration of rapid eye movement sleep circuitry underlies rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

During healthy rapid eye movement sleep, skeletal muscles are actively forced into a state of motor paralysis. However, in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder-a relatively common neurological disorder-this natural process is lost. A lack of motor paralysis (atonia) in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder allows individuals to actively move, which at times can be excessive and violent. At first glance this may sound harmless, but it is not because rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder patients frequently injure themselves or the person they sleep with. It is hypothesized that

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and rapid eye movement sleep without atonia in narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a rare disabling hypersomnia disorder that may include cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep-onset rapid eye movement (REM) periods, but also disrupted nighttime sleep by nocturnal awakenings, and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). RBD is characterized by dream-enacting behavior and impaired motor inhibition during REM sleep (REM sleep without atonia, RSWA). RBD is commonly associated with neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinsonisms, but is also reported in narcolepsy in up to 60% of patients. RBD in patients with narcolepsy is, however, a disti

Human amygdala activation during rapid eye movements of rapid eye movement sleep: an intracranial study.

The amygdaloid complex plays a crucial role in processing emotional signals and in the formation of emotional memories. Neuroimaging studies have shown human amygdala activation during rapid eye movement sleep (REM). Stereotactically implanted electrodes for presurgical evaluation in epileptic patients provide a unique opportunity to directly record amygdala activity. The present study analysed amygdala activity associated with REM sleep eye movements on the millisecond scale. We propose that phasic activation associated with rapid eye movements may provide the amygdala with endogenous excitat

[Diagnosis of vertigo: keep an eye on central eye movement disorders].

With specialist knowledge ophthalmologists can make a valuable contribution to the interdisciplinary work-up of patients with vertigo as the leading symptom. The neuro-ophthalmological examination of eye movements by an ophthalmologist and/or orthoptist is an important contribution because the various vertigo syndromes can only be correctly evaluated by a combined examination of the vestibular and ocular motor systems. If the ophthalmologist is the first doctor to examine a patient suspected disorders from other specialist fields can be indicated, in particular neurology and otorhinolaryngolog

Eye movements and the search for the essence of schizophrenia.

Clinical Schizophrenia has eluded precise description because of its protean phenotypic manifestations and variable clinical course, a variability that also makes it difficult to discover genetic linkages. Co-familial traits have higher recurrence risk rates than schizophrenia itself and might serve as pointers to the underlying physiology of schizophrenic illness. A dysfunction of smooth pursuit eye movements is one such co-familial trait that occurs in about 40 to 80% of schizophrenic patients and about 25 to 40% of their first degree relatives. The eye movement abnormality appears only when
