Comparison of Outcomes of Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Performed by Surgical Fellows vs Faculty.

IMPORTANCE: Concern regarding surgical trainees' operative autonomy has increased in recent years, emphasizing patient safety and preparation for independent practice. Regarding abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR), long-term outcomes of fellow autonomy have yet to be delineated. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of AWRs performed by fellows and compare them with those of AWRs performed by assistant, associate, and senior-level professors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent AWR for ventral hernias or repair of tumor

Improving tobacco dependence education among the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry faculty.

Tobacco-related health problems are among the most preventable forms of illness. By assuming proactive tobacco use counseling roles, dental professionals can help reduce the number of people who use tobacco. Minimum standards for intervention by dental care providers were established more than a decade ago by the American Dental Association and the American Dental Hygienists' Association. The goal of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in its tobacco-cessation efforts is to move beyond those standards towards more effective interventions. The school conducted a study to determine the for

[Prospective evaluation of blood cultures in Medical Faculty Hospital of Blacksea Technical University].

In this study, the rate of blood culture contamination, bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibilities causing nosocomial and community acquired bloodstream infections were investigated prospectively during the period February 2003 to February 2004. In the study period, among the 5994 blood culture samples obtained from 3114 patients, 1091 (18%) yielded positive results. Seventy-four of them (1.2%) were evaluated as false positive, 514 (9%) were pseudobacteremia or contamination. According to patients' clinical features, 503 (8%) blood culture samples were associated with blood s

A Procedural Faculty Development Course for Emergency Physicians Practicing in Community and Academic Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining competence in high-acuity, low-occurrence (HALO) procedures poses a challenge for emergency physicians as they progress past residency training or practice in lower-acuity settings. Simulation-based deliberate practice offers a feasible method to sustain procedural competence. We developed and evaluated a blended, faculty development procedural curriculum designed to improve confidence and clinical application of HALO skills across a five-hospital emergency medicine (EM) network. METHODS: A faculty needs assessment and departmental quality data informed the creation

Comparison of Student and Faculty Perceptions of Dental Haptic Simulation in Caries Removal Training.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional simulated caries removal training has limitations in realism and availability. Haptic dental simulators offer immersive, repeatable practice with tactile feedback. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate both students' and faculty's perceptions of a simulator and its realism in caries removal. METHODS: Thirty third- and fourth-year dental students and 30 faculty members participated in this study. Participants used SIMtoCARE Dente (SDS) to perform virtual caries removal on tooth #2 distal-occlusal surface. Each participant was scheduled for a 40-min session, wh

The implementation of an innovative just-in-time educational huddle for faculty development of academic hospitalists.

Academic hospitalists supervising residents on inpatient wards face the dual challenge of managing changing patient complexity and learner needs. Resident experience is highly dependent on supervising faculty; however, traditional faculty development often fails to respond to real-time challenges of clinical teaching. To provide just-in-time faculty development, we implemented a weekly educational huddle for hospitalists rotating on resident ward teams using a Community of Practice model. The huddle emphasized peer coaching and discussion of real-time challenges. In this perspective article, w

Factors contributing to the burnout of the faculties of a medical university in Iran: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Faculty members confront a variety of obstacles over time, the most recent of which is the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, which may increase their vulnerability to burnout (BO). This study aims to examine BO in medical school faculties, as well as the factors that lead to BO and well-being in them. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 using online questionnaires completed by 222 faculty members of a medical university in Iran. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) and the Well-being index (WBI) were used. Additionally, we g

A bibliometric analysis of the research outcome of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum 2019-2023.

Using two databases, this bibliometric analysis was done for the papers published by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum (FMUK), from 2019 to 2023. Data were extracted from SCImago for all Sudan, and from PubMed for the publications by FMUK and its associated research centres, the Institute of Endemic Diseases, and the Mycetoma Research Center. The analysis of publications included the count and type of publications, the journals, and national and international collaboration assessment. The publications from FMUK show improvement over time in number and quality, a growth that is si

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Course Design and Features: A Survey of Expert Faculty and Instructors.

PURPOSE: Multiple surveys have been used to investigate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) coursework offered in speech-language pathology programs in the last 3 decades. These studies primarily explored the availability of AAC courses and reported a limited number of course characteristics. Because few studies to date have specifically examined the AAC course design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the design and features of AAC coursework, such as learning objectives, course content, assignments, and readings and resources, currently taught in the United States. A simple and flexible model to calculate annual merit raises for health sciences faculty.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to develop and implement a simple and flexible mathematical model to generate merit-based salary increases as a percentage of the faculty base salaries, with the flexibility to choose the range of merit raises. METHODS: Annual faculty performance scores, faculty base salaries, and available salary increase pool were used in a relatively simple linear model to determine the individual faculty merit raises as a percentage of their base salary. The core model allows the selection of a slope value that determines how steeply the merit raise changes with a

The keys to learning for university students with disabilities: Motivation, emotion and faculty-student relationships.

The affective-emotional dimension may constitute a key element in teaching and learning processes. It is linked to relationship between faculty and students and may help foster students with disabilities' motivation to learn and remain at university. This is the approach adopted in this article, which aims to fill a gap detected in the literature, since very little attention has hitherto been paid to motivation, emotion and the importance of faculty-student relationships in the learning processes of students with disabilities. In this study, 119 faculty members from 10 Spanish universities who

A Model for an Intensive Hands-On Faculty Development Workshop To Foster Change in Laboratory Teaching.

Faculty development workshops are frequently used to bring about change in faculty teaching. Yet, the characteristics of successful faculty professional development in the context of laboratory teaching are unclear. In this Perspective, we describe our approach to intensive hands-on faculty development workshops for fostering change in laboratory teaching and present evidence for the effectiveness of the approach. The outcomes from our workshops and feedback from past participants support the following recommendations: 1) faculty should attend workshops in teams from their institutions, 2) wor

The long-term impact of an interprofessional humanistic faculty development programme: A qualitative investigation.

RATIONALE, AIMS, AND OBJECTIVES: While it has long been supported that faculty development programmes serve as a means to improving practical knowledge, professional skills, and identity formation for faculty, significantly less research is focused on how learning that occurs in faculty development programmes is actually employed in the workplace and ingrained in day-to-day activities. The present study qualitatively explored the long-term impact of the Mentoring and Professionalism in Training (MAP-IT) programme, a longitudinal, interprofessional faculty development curriculum designed to enh
