Expectancy effects in feedback processing are explained primarily by time-frequency delta not theta.

The roles of outcome valence and expectancy in feedback processing have been investigated as important factors modulating event-related potential (ERP) measures including the feedback negativity (FN) and P300, but results have been inconsistent. Recent work from our group has shown that processes underlying the FN and P300 are better represented as separable processes in the theta (3-7Hz) and delta (0-3Hz) ranges using time-frequency analysis. The current study evaluated the modulation of time-domain FN and P300 and time-frequency theta and delta to outcome valence and expectancy in a gambling

The effects of frequency altered feedback on reading comprehension abilities of normal and reading disordered children.

The effects of frequency altered feedback (FAF) on the reading comprehension levels and error types of normal children and children with reading disorders were examined. Participants read aloud third, sixth, and ninth grade level material in non-altered auditory feedback (NAF) and FAF conditions. Comprehension improved significantly when the reading disordered children read aloud under the FAF listening condition, regardless of the reading level. Significant differences did not occur in reading comprehension for the normal readers under NAF versus FAF conditions. Reading disordered children pr

Stimulation-induced behavioral inhibition: a new model for understanding physical violence.

Physical violence is widely considered to result from action carried out with the intention of causing injury; that is, from aggression. However, the "hypothesis" of aggression is inapplicable in all but a few instances as well as inappropriate for many destructive, rage-associated responses directed at inanimate objects. This paper outlines a new perspective on physical violence, reinterpreting many behaviors hitherto labeled aggressive as stimulation-seeking behaviors (SSBs) above an arbitrary level of intensity. It is further proposed that: 1) physical violence is a by-product of SSB, drive

Theories of ability and the pursuit of challenge among adolescents with mild mental retardation.

Dweck (1991) distinguishes two different ways children can view their abilities. Children who have an 'incremental theory' of their ability believe that it is a changeable, increasable and controllable quantity. Those who have an 'entity theory' believe their ability represents a fixed, unchangeable trait. Children with an 'incremental theory' tend to display adaptive achievement behaviours such as pursuing challenging activities, whereas children with an 'entity theory' tend to avoid challenges. The present study examined the usefulness of this distinction in understanding the behaviour and a

Structural learning is enhanced by increasing blocked repetition of visuomotor perturbations.

Structural learning refers to the ability to extract and generalize the underlying structure of a set of perturbations-even when the specific perturbations vary from trial to trial. In visuomotor tasks, exposure to such variable but related perturbations has been shown to speed subsequent adaptation to a new, fixed perturbation. However, many center-out reaching studies present several repetitions of each perturbation-often cycling through a set of eight targets-before switching to the next one. This raises the question of whether these repeated exposures reduce the true variability that is th

Depressive symptoms and the processing of unexpected social feedback: Differences in surprise levels, feedback acceptance, and "immunizing" cognition.

Negative social expectations are a key symptom of depression. It has been suggested that individuals with depressive symptoms tend to maintain these expectations by devaluing new experiences that do not fit prior expectations. However, our understanding of the role of such "immunizing" cognition in response to unexpected social feedback in depression, as well as the cognitive mechanisms involved, remains limited. This study investigated the association between depressive symptoms and the cognitive processing of unexpected positive or negative social feedback using a novel, video-based approach

Frontal cortical effects on feedback processing and reinforcement learning: Relation of EEG asymmetry with the feedback-related negativity and behavior.

Reinforcement learning refers to the acquisition of approach or avoidance action tendencies through repeated reward/nonreward feedback. Although much research on reinforcement learning has focused on the striatum, the prefrontal cortex likely modulates this process. Given prior research demonstrating a consistent pattern of lateralized frontal cortical activity in affective responses and approach/avoidance tendencies in the EEG literature, we aimed to elucidate the role of frontal EEG asymmetry in reinforcement learning. Thirty-two participants completed a probabilistic selection task in which

The impact of precommitment on risk-taking while gambling: A preliminary study.

Background and aims Precommitment refers to the ability to prospectively restrict the access to temptations. This study examined whether risk-taking during gambling is decreased when an individual has the opportunity to precommit to his forthcoming bet. Methods Sixty individuals participated in a gambling task that consisted of direct choice (simply chose one monetary option among four available ones, ranging from low-risk to high-risk options) or precommitment trials (before choosing an amount, participants had the opportunity to make a binding choice that made high-risk options unavailable).

One size does not fit all: Examining heterogeneity and identifying moderators of the alliance-outcome association.

Although the alliance-outcome association is one of the most consistent findings in psychotherapy research, it is also highly heterogeneous. Little is known about the factors explaining this variability, and consequently there is a lack of adequate knowledge about how to utilize this association to improve treatment. The present study had the following objectives: (a) to examine the associations between within- and between-individual variability in alliance and outcome, controlling for previous symptomatic levels; (b) to examine the duration of the alliance-outcome association; and (c) to exam

The effects of gated speech on the fluency of speakers who stutter.

It is known that the speech of people who stutter improves when the speaker's own vocalization is changed while the participant is speaking. One explanation of these effects is the disruptive rhythm hypothesis (DRH). The DRH maintains that the manipulated sound only needs to disturb timing to affect speech control. The experiment investigated whether speech that was gated on and off (interrupted) affected the speech control of speakers who stutter. Eight children who stutter read a passage when they heard their voice normally and when the speech was gated. Fluency was enhanced (fewer errors we

Effects of reducing frequency of intrinsic knowledge of results on the learning of a motor skill.

The guidance hypothesis suggests too much knowledge of results during skill acquisition can be detrimental to long-term performance. Possibly, the learner becomes dependent on augmented KR and is unable to use intrinsic feedback. This study examined this hypothesis with three groups performing a golf putting task. One group received continuous KR about ball path and final location; the other groups were deprived of specific KR on 50% or 100% of the acquisition trials. As expected, the continuous KR group performed better during acquisition, but the KR-deprived groups performed better on delaye

Prior belief and polarity in multicue learning.

We report two experiments in which participants are trained using a multicue probability learning (MCPL) task, which attempts to simulate the acquisition of expert judgement by experience in the real world. Participants were asked to predict performance in certain occupations given a profile of personality test results with trial-by-trial outcome feedback. Only some cues were relevant, and the polarity of the cues (positive or negative predictors) was unspecified. In addition, 25% of random noise was added to the feedback to simulate real world uncertainty. The main factor of interest was that

Shared and Disorder-Specific Neurocomputational Mechanisms of Decision-Making in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often share phenotypes of repetitive behaviors, possibly underpinned by abnormal decision-making. To compare neural correlates underlying decision-making between these disorders, brain activation of boys with ASD (N = 24), OCD (N = 20) and typically developing controls (N = 20) during gambling was compared, and computational modeling compared performance. Patients were unimpaired on number of risky decisions, but modeling showed that both patient groups had lower choice consistency and relied less on reinforcement learning

Examining the longer-term efficacy of brief, alcohol-focused personalized feedback interventions for individuals with internalizing distress: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Efficacy of brief alcohol interventions for young adults with internalizing distress (i.e. symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress) is unclear. We tested the moderating effect of internalizing distress on the efficacy of alcohol single- and multicomponent personalized feedback interventions (PFIs). DESIGN: Secondary data were analyzed from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) testing the efficacy of single and multicomponent PFIs, compared with an attention-only control condition. SETTING: Participants were sampled from two West Coast universities in the United States.

Emotional Context Modulates Neural Prediction-Error Encoding.

Emotional experiences are closely intertwined with reinforcement learning, yet the extent to which emotional context influences the neural encoding of learning signals remains unclear. The present study examined whether emotional context modulates trialwise neural prediction error (PE) encoding during reinforcement learning. Fifty-six participants completed a drifting three-armed bandit task while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Choice options were consistently paired with positive, neutral, or negative emotional images that were presented during feedback processing. Trial-by-trial

Homo imitans? Seven reasons why imitation couldn't possibly be associative.

Many comparative and developmental psychologists believe that we are Homo imitans; humans are more skilled and prolific imitators than other animals, because we have a special, inborn 'intermodal matching' mechanism that integrates representations of others with representations of the self. In contrast, the associative sequence learning (ASL) model suggests that human infants learn to imitate using mechanisms that they share with other animals, and the rich resources provided by their sociocultural environments. This article answers seven objections to the ASL model: (i) it presents evidence t

Feedback-related negativity is enhanced in adolescence during a gambling task with and without probabilistic reinforcement learning.

Feedback-related negativity (FRN) is a negative deflection that appears around 250 ms after the gain or loss of feedback to chosen alternatives in a gambling task in frontocentral regions following outcomes. Few studies have reported FRN enhancement in adolescents compared with adults in a gambling task without probabilistic reinforcement learning, despite the fact that learning from positive or negative consequences is crucial for decision-making during adolescence. Therefore, the aim of the present research was to identify differences in FRN amplitude and latency between adolescents and adul

Appraisals Generate Specific Configurations of Facial Muscle Movements in a Gambling Task: Evidence for the Component Process Model of Emotion.

Scherer's Component Process Model provides a theoretical framework for research on the production mechanism of emotion and facial emotional expression. The model predicts that appraisal results drive facial expressions, which unfold sequentially and cumulatively over time. In two experiments, we examined facial muscle activity changes (via facial electromyography recordings over the corrugator, cheek, and frontalis regions) in response to events in a gambling task. These events were experimentally manipulated feedback stimuli which presented simultaneous information directly affecting goal con

[The mystery of schizophrenia. The role of a preventive approach in the treatment of mental illness].

Despite decades of research, there is still a disquieting amount of unanswered questions concerning the genesis as well as the efficient therapy of schizophrenia. The classic approaches emphasizing genetic and family influences were followed by more comprehensive ones that focus on the interplay between the cognitive and the emotional social symptoms of the illness. The demand-access-matching model and, perhaps even more clearly, the cognitive appraisal model seek to integrate biological and early childhood experience factors and show their impact on cognitive as well as emotional functioning.

The effects of distributed feedback and videotape self-monitoring on the productivity of a janitorial trainee with mental retardation.

The participant, an adult worker with moderate mental retardation, had received prior training in cleaning bathroom, hall, and office sites in a community-based competitive work setting, but demonstrated substandard productivity. An intervention program was designed, consisting of (a) videotape-based self-monitoring, and (b) distributed verbal feedback and breaks which were systematically reduced over time. Sequential application of the intervention to the three cleaning sites resulted in the person's increased productivity in each site. Results are discussed in terms of the components of the
