The critical importance of recognition, evaluation, and management of mental health on outcomes following hip arthroscopy - A synthetic narrative review: Current concepts.

Mental health and wellness influence patients with hip pain and dysfunction secondary to Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome, acetabular dysplasia, and labral injury. Disorders of mental wellness may impact hip preservation surgery patients both before and after surgery. Major depression and generalized anxiety are the two most common diagnoses that affect hip preservation surgery patients. There are dozens of unique questionnaires that can subjectively and objectively characterize the mental health of patients with hip pain. Pain threshold and pain tolerance are two issues that must be reco

Single-Leg Squat Test in the Clinical Setting Does Not Discriminate Patients With Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome From Asymptomatic Individuals.

CONTEXT: Laboratorial 3-dimensional kinematic analyses have shown changes in the single-leg squat's (SLS) pattern of patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). However, it is unknown whether clinicians are able to detect these changes using 2-dimensional kinematics. OBJECTIVE: To compare the frontal plane 2-dimensional kinematics of patients with FAIS and asymptomatic individuals in the SLS test performed in a clinical setting. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Physical therapy clinic. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty men with bilateral FAIS and 20 asymptomatic men. MAIN OUTCOME M

[Progress in diagnosis and hip arthroscopic treatment of borderline developmental dysplasia of hip with Cam-type femoroacetabular impingement].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the biomechanical characteristics, diagnosis, and hip arthroscopic treatment of borderline developmental dysplasia of hip (BDDH) with Cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (Cam FAI). METHODS: The literature on BDDH with Cam FAI at home and abroad in recent years was extensively reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: In patients with BDDH and Cam FAI, the femoral neck anteversion angle and femoral neck shaft angle increase, the pelvis tilts, and the acetabulum rotates, resulting in instability of the hip joint. In order to maintain the stability of the hip joint, the directio

Efficacy and safety of preoperative versus postoperative NSAIDs on pain relief in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy surgery: A multicentre, randomized, controlled trial.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Postoperative pain relief is a critical issue for hip arthroscopy surgery (HAS). This study aimed to investigate the effect of preemptive non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for postoperative analgesia in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) patients receiving HAS. METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, controlled study enrolled 204 FAI patients receiving HAS, then assigned them to preoperative (PRE, N = 103) or postoperative (POS, N = 101) group as a 1:1 ratio; the PRE group administrated NSAIDs from 24 h pre-surgery to day 7 (D7) post-surgery, while the

Hip-Spine Syndrome in the Nonarthritic Patient.

Hip-spine syndrome refers to concurrent hip and spine pathology with overlapping symptoms. Most of the literature has studied it in relation to total hip arthroplasty literature and has been shown to increase dislocation risk. Lumbar spine and pelvic mobility have been studied less frequently in relation to nonarthritic pathologic hip states. Understanding the biomechanical relationship between the lumbar spine, pelvis, and hip can help elucidate how hip-spine syndrome affects the nonarthritic hip and how it impacts outcomes of hip arthroscopy. Changes in lumbar spine motion may be the reason

The traction force of the pulled limb in hip arthroscopic surgery is determined by stiffness coefficient which is significantly related to muscle volume.

PURPOSE: To verify the relationship between muscle volume, lateral centre-edge angle (LCEA), alpha angle (AA), body mass index (BMI) and Beighton score with stiffness coefficient (SC). To analyse the difference of traction force at different physical states of hip joint capsule. METHODS: Thirty-six patients who underwent hip arthroscopy operation were included. The volumes of some related muscles were measured in MRI images by 3D Slicer. We recorded and tested differences in traction force of five joint capsule physical states, including before (State 1) and after joint capsule puncture (Stat

Lateral Center-Edge Angle Is Not Predictive of Acetabular Articular Cartilage Surface Area: Anatomic Variation of the Lunate Fossa.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and dysplasia requires careful characterization of acetabular morphology. The lateral center-edge angle (LCEA) is often used to assess lateral acetabular anatomy. Previous work has questioned the LCEA as a surrogate for acetabular contact/articular cartilage surface area because of the variable morphology of the lunate fossa. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that weightbearing articular cartilage of the acetabulum would poorly correlate with LCEA secondary to significant variation in the size of the lunate fossa. STU

[Joint preserving surgery of the adult hip: pelvic osteotomies].

Deformity and malposition of the acetabulum can occur during the development of the hip. Developmental hip dysplasia and acetabular retroversion are possible causes of osteoarthritis in the young adult. Surgical management with reorientation of the acetabulum allows causal therapy of the deformity and preservation of the native hip joint. Established techniques are the Bernese periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) and the Tönnis and Kalchschmidt triple osteotomy of the pelvis. Both techniques permit three-dimensional correction of the position of the acetabulum. Advantages and disadvantages of each t

Osteonecrosis and femoro-acetabular impingement: sequelae of developmental dysplasia of the hip.

A 2-year-old girl with developmental dysplasia of the right hip underwent open reduction and capsulorrhaphy via the anterior approach with hip spica casting in an internally rotated position. During her 26 years of follow-up, she was found to have osteonecrosis and subsequently cam-type femoro-acetabular impingement at 28 years of age. She was treated with surgical dislocation of the hip and osteochondroplasty to recreate the normal contour of the head and neck offset.

"At-risk" positioning and hip biomechanics of the Peewee ice hockey sprint start.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is becoming a prevalent overuse injury diagnosis among hockey players. In the adult ice hockey stride, the "at-risk" hip position, defined by internal rotation during flexion and external rotation during abduction, reportedly increases hip vulnerability to labral injury as a result of FAI. HYPOTHESIS: Peewee youth ice hockey players display the kinematics for both described at-risk hip positions (internal rotation during flexion and external rotation during abduction) in the ice hockey sprint start. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. M

Fluoroscopic demonstration of femoroacetabular impingement during hip arthroscopy.

Femoroacetabular impingement is a cause of hip pain that in selected cases can be treated by removal of impinging bone (osteoplasty). No absolute parameters for osteoplasty exist. We present a technique for dynamic evaluation of bony impingement and control of arthroscopic osteoplasty using intraoperative fluoroscopy. With the patient supine on a fracture table, the C-arm is positioned between the legs. Femoral anteversion is measured with the C-arm vertical and the hip flexed 90° (Dunn view). The C-arm is then tilted back 25° from vertical to create a profile view of the anterior rim, and the
