Current monitoring of fetal development includes fetal ultrasonography, chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis for chromosome analysis, and maternal serum biochemical screening for analytes associated with aneuploidy and open neural tube defects. Over the last 15 years, significant advances in noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) via cell-free fetal (cff) nucleic acids in maternal plasma have resulted in the ability to determine fetal sex, RhD genotype, and aneuploidy. Cff nucleic acids in the maternal circulation originate primarily from the placenta. This contrasts with cff nucleic acid

Maternal diabetes is associated with increased risk for abnormal fetal organogenesis, but its effects on the developing lungs are still insufficiently known. To determine the effect of maternal hyperglycemia on postnatal lung development, we studied lung structural and cellular changes in newborn rats exposed to intrauterine hyperglycemia. We induced hyperglycemia in Sprague-Dawley rats with i.p. streptozotocin before pregnancy and allowed the hyperglycemic and control dams deliver at term. Lungs were obtained on postnatal day (d) 0, d7, and d14 and analyzed for lung weight and morphology, as

Numerical research on the health effects of air pollution has been published in the last decade. Epidemiological studies have shown that children's exposure to air pollutants during fetal development and early postnatal life is associated with many types of health problems including abnormal development (low birth weight [LBW], very low birth weight [VLBW], preterm birth [PTB], intrauterine growth restriction [IUGR], congenital defects, and intrauterine and infant mortality), decreased lung growth, increased rates of respiratory tract infections, childhood asthma, behavioral problems, and neur

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a congenital disorder with an incidence of 1 in 2500 live births. Respiratory distress of newborns with CDH is the result of pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension. Hypoplastic lungs are characterized by a decreased number of airways with smaller airspaces, whereas the combination of a decreased number of vascular branches and an increased adventitia and medial thickness of the pulmonary arterial walls result in pulmonary hypertension. The appearance of the CDH lungs suggests that its complete formation is stalled during development. Understand

A case report of a patient with a large pulmonary arteriovenous fistula and valvar pulmonary stenosis is presented. The fistula was diagnosed prenatally and its effect on in utero cardiovascular growth and development documented. Due to concerns about massive intrapulmonary shunting potentially causing profound cyanosis after delivery, an EXIT (EX-utero Intrapartum Treatment) procedure was used to transfer the infant from placental to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Severe pulmonary microvascular disease resulted in prohibitive pulmonary hypertension despite surgical ligati

Investigations were undertaken, using the mouse as an animal model, to study the effect of Escherichia coli on fetal development. The i.v. injection of 7.5 X 10(6) bacteria, originally obtained from a suspected case of human pyelonephritis, caused only a mild and transient disturbance of maternal health but caused severe fetal wastage. Groups of mice were examined 4, 7 and 11 days after infection and the numbers of organisms were determined in the spleen, liver, kidneys, placentas and resorptions. From the findings obtained, it was concluded that the Esch. coli grew preferentially in the place

Accumulating evidence indicates that the fetal environment plays an important role in brain development and sets the brain on a trajectory across the life span. An abnormal fetal environment results when factors that should be present during a critical period of development are absent or when factors that should not be in the developing brain are present. While these factors may acutely disrupt brain function, the real cost to society resides in the long-term effects, which include important mental health issues. We review the effects of three factors, fetal alcohol exposure, teratogen exposur

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common complication of pregnancy, principally caused by suboptimal placental function, and is associated with high rates of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Clinical studies suggest that the time of onset of placental insufficiency is an important contributor towards the neurodevelopmental impairments that are evident in children who had FGR. It is however currently unknown how early-onset and late-onset FGR differentially affect brain development. The aim of this study was to examine neuropathology in early-onset and late-onset FGR fetal sheep and to dete

A test is needed that would accurately predict favorable neonatal lung performance in the presence of prolonged severe oligohydramnios caused by ruptured membranes so that optimal obstetric care can be provided. We propose such a test that is based on the degree of modulation of fetal ductal blood flow velocity by fetal breathing movements after maternal glucose loading. In a prospective cross-sectional study of 49 normal pregnancies (50 fetuses) between 25 and 38 weeks an exponential increase in breathing-related ductal blood flow velocity modulation was observed with advancing gestational ag

OBJECTIVE: During fetal surgery, fetuses receive medication (atropine-fentanyl-curare) to prevent fetal pain, movement and bradycardia. Although essential there has been no detailed review of potential side effects. Herein we aimed to assess the effects of this medication cocktail on fetal brain development in a rabbit model.
METHODS: Pregnant does underwent laparotomy at 28 days of gestation. Two pups of each horn were randomized to an ultrasound guided injection with medication (atropine-cisatracurium-fentanyl, as clinically used) or saline (sham). The third pup was used as control. At term

Active and passive smoking constitutes one of the most serious public health problems due to the deleterious effect on the expected infant and the mother. These effects are dose dependent as illustrated by intra-uterine growth retardation, where the effect worsens with duration of smoking during pregnancy, and also by other conditions such as abrutio placentae or placenta praevia, premature rupture of the membranes and preterm birth, where the risk is multiplied by two (or even three)! In utero death is the ultimate sanction. Studies on the consequences of maternal smoking on fetal development

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine-metabolic dysfunction in reproductive-aged women, may be involved in compromised pregnancy and offspring outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether maternal PCOS affects fetal growth, fetal development, and placental features.
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 60 pregnant women with PCOS (PCOS group) and 120 healthy pregnant women without PCOS (control group). Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed followed by an ultrasound examination and indications for imaging, including known or susp

BACKGROUND: although the development of the human wrist ligaments has been studied, to our knowledge, a detailed study of the development of the scapholunate ligament during the embryonic and early fetal period has not been performed.
METHODS: we have analyzed 32 human embryos ranging from 8 to 31 mm of crown-rump length, and 26 fetuses ranging 33-102 mm long.
RESULTS: our observations showed that, in Carnegie stage 20 (20 mm), we can observe a mass of mesenchymal tissue between the cartilaginous anlages of the lunate, the scaphoid and the radius, that in stage 22 (22 mm) adopts the shape of

Background/Objectives: Iron is a fundamental micronutrient. Its deficiency could have a potentially harmful influence on maternal and fetal well-being. Methods: This review synthesizes current evidence on the epidemiology, consequences, and clinical meaning of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant women. Results: Untreated ID in pregnancy is associated with a wide spectrum of adverse outcomes: maternal clinical symptoms, cardiovascular disturbances, preterm birth, low birth weight, and impaired fetal neurodevelopment. Furthermore, ID has been related to impaired imp

Neck epaxial muscles, which are differentiated for suspending the head, occupy a large space posterior to the cervical lordosis. Limited information exists regarding developmental process that determines the muscle fiber direction and bony attachment of neck epaxial muscles. We examined histological sections of 28 human fetuses aged approximately 7-18 weeks (crown-rump length, 20-150 mm). In place of the underdeveloped lordosis, the transverse process of cervical vertebrae was shifted anteriorly at the cervicothoracic junction. The semispinalis and longissimus were distinguished by the directi

The embryological and fetal morphogenesis of the eyelids and lacrimal drainage system is multifactorial and complex. This protracted process begins in the 5th week of prenatal life and involves a successive series of subtle and tightly regulated morphogenetic events. Major milestones of the embryological and fetal development of the eyelids include the beginning of eyelid formation during the 6th week, eyelid fusion by the 8th week, and the development of eyelid structures beginning in the 9th week (immediately following eyelid fusion), with progression until eyelid separation by the 24th week

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a major determinant of global morbidity and mortality. There is an unmet need for methods to stratify the pregnant population on the basis of FGR risk. Despite evolutionary divergence in mammalian reproduction, studies of genetically modified mice have identified biomarkers that have been validated in women, and a systematic screen for genes that control fetal growth in animals could help identify novel clinical biomarkers. Current approaches to biomarker identification using human samples include both targeted and discovery approaches (omics). Application of

The relative timing of the main fetal development events in species determine the extent of fetal development at birth, which range along a gradient of having altricial and precocial traits. The results from this study allow for description of important fetal developments in collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) using data from 118 embryo/fetuses from 68 pregnant peccaries obtained over a period of 15 years through collaborative methods with local hunters in the Amazon. The chronological order of emergence of external characteristics in relation to the total dorsal length (TDL) was: differentiated
