Asymmetry in congenital ocular motor apraxia.

A 10-month-old girl presented with apparently unilateral ocular motor apraxia (OMA). Electro-oculography confirmed an inability to generate a saccade for fixation or in response to an optokinetic or vestibular evoked stimulus to the right. Fixation and optokinetic saccades and vestibular evoked nystagmus were present to the left. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a small cerebellar vermis but no localizing unilateral abnormality or tumour. Subsequent review of video recordings of 16 children with congenital OMA revealed that 5 demonstrated asymmetry in the generation of fixation saccades. Tw

Evaluation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex by gaze function.

The relationship between the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and gaze fixation was investigated in normal adults, normal children, patients with cerebellar lesion and patients with labyrinthine dysfunction. Large VOR gains were found in patients with cerebellar lesion and normal children, both presenting poor suppression by gaze. Pathological decline in the VOR gain with labyrinthine lesion impaired spatial gaze fixation; however, it did not affect fixation-induced suppression. Gaze effect on the VOR, whether amplifying or suppressing, decreased linearly and rapidly at higher frequencies so that

Double-masked randomised placebo-controlled trial of the effect of prismatic corrections on rate of reading and the relationship with symptoms.

Practitioners' decisions on when to intervene in decompensated heterophoria are often based on symptoms, which are in some cases an unreliable indicator of whether an intervention will be helpful. The aim of our study was to determine when prismatic corrections improve performance at a measure of dynamic visual function: the Wilkins Rate of Reading Test (WRRT). All participants manifested an aligning prism (associated heterophoria) on the near Mallett Unit of 0.5Delta or greater. There were 80 participants, of whom 58 had exophoria, 15 esophoria, and seven hyperphoria. The effect of the aligni

Stability of gaze control in dyslexia.

The neurobiological basis of saccade control has at least three components: fixation, reflexes, voluntary control. It was found in earlier studies that the voluntary component of saccade is specifically impaired in dyslexics as compared with controls of the same age. In this study, we searched for evidence of fixation instability by analyzing the eye movements of 99 control subjects and 262 dyslexics (age 7-17 years) performing an overlap prosaccade and a gap antisaccade task. The percentage of intrusive saccades was counted for each subject during a period of the trial where stationary fixati

Good visual function in posterior microphthalmos.

Posterior microphthalmos is a rare condition in which the anterior segment is normal in size and configuration, but the posterior segment is reduced in size; this results in axial hyperopia and retinal folding. Patients have decreased vision that is caused by posterior segment abnormalities, high refractive error, and amblyopia. We present a case of posterior microphthalmos in which retinal function was relatively intact and visual loss was believed to be primarily caused by refractive error and amblyopia. After treatment, the child's visual acuity and school performance improved. This case em

The AC/A ratio and convergence in hypermetropia corrected with spectacles or contact lenses.

Some hypermetropes, when corrected with contact lenses, appear to have a much smaller AC/A ratio than when corrected with spectacle lenses. Ocular convergence measured with contact lenses is greater than that measured with spectacles. Studies were carried out to establish the cause of these effects. Theoretical considerations are compared with the experimental results obtained. This study emphasizes the importance of the different amounts of magnification induced by contact lenses as compared with spectacles.

Normal correspondence of tectal maps for saccadic eye movements in strabismus.

The superior colliculus is a major brain stem structure for the production of saccadic eye movements. Electrical stimulation at any given point in the motor map generates saccades of defined amplitude and direction. It is unknown how this saccade map is affected by strabismus. Three macaques were raised with exotropia, an outwards ocular deviation, by detaching the medial rectus tendon in each eye at age 1 mo. The animals were able to make saccades to targets with either eye and appeared to alternate fixation freely. To probe the organization of the superior colliculus, microstimulation was ap

Central Ocular Motor Disorders: Clinical and Topographic Anatomical Diagnosis, Syndromes and Underlying Diseases.

The key to the diagnosis of ocular motor disorders is a systematic clinical examination of the different types of eye movements, including eye position, spontaneous nystagmus, range of eye movements, smooth pursuit, saccades, gaze-holding function, vergence, optokinetic nystagmus, as well as testing of the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and visual fixation suppression of the VOR. This is like a window which allows you to look into the brain stem and cerebellum even if imaging is normal. Relevant anatomical structures are the midbrain, pons, medulla, cerebellum and rarely the cor

The role of event understanding in guiding attentional selection in real-world scenes: The Scene Perception & Event Comprehension Theory (SPECT).

Your understanding of what you see now surely influences what you will look at next. Yet this simple concept has only recently begun to be systematically studied and elaborated within theoretical frameworks. The Scene Perception & Event Comprehension Theory (SPECT) distinguishes between front-end and back-end processes that occur while viewers perceive and comprehend dynamic real-world events. Front-end processes occur during each eye fixation (information extraction, attentional selection) and back-end processes occur in memory (the current event model, the stored event model, prior knowledge

Approach to Quantify Eye Movements to Augment Stroke Diagnosis With a Non-Calibrated Eye-Tracker.

UNLABELLED: Automated eye-tracking technology could enhance diagnosis for many neurological diseases, including stroke. Current literature focuses on gaze estimation through a form of calibration. However, patients with neuro-ocular abnormalities may have difficulty completing a calibration procedure due to inattention or other neurological deficits. OBJECTIVE: We investigated 1) the need for calibration to measure eye movement symmetry in healthy controls and 2) the potential of eye movement symmetry to distinguish between healthy controls and patients. METHODS: We analyzed fixations, smoot

Objective Measures of Gaze Behaviors and the Visual Environment during Near-Work Tasks in Young Adult Myopes and Emmetropes.

PURPOSE: To objectively quantify near-work gaze behaviors and the visual environment during reading tasks performed on a smartphone and on paper in both indoor and outdoor environments in myopes and emmetropes. METHODS: A novel wearable gaze and viewing distance tracking device was used to quantify near-work gaze behaviors (focusing demand) and the visual environment (20° peripheral scene relative defocus) during a series of reading tasks. Data from nine myopes (mean age, 21 ± 1.4 years) and 10 emmetropes (21 ± 0.8 years) were analyzed. Five-minute reading tasks (matched for font type and siz

Forced Gazing: A Stimulus-bound Behavior.

We studied four patients with acquired brain injury who were compelled to gaze at a moving object or the face of an individual who came into their sight, especially the person's eyes. The patients continued to gaze at the object or person until it disappeared from their sight. This behavior, referred to as forced gazing, is related to visual groping (part of the instinctive grasp reaction), and, together with a similar sign of visual grasping, constitutes a spectrum of visual stimulus-bound behaviors. In addition to forced gazing, the patients exhibited a primitive reflex such as a grasp or su

Suppression of frontal eye field neuronal responses with maintained fixation.

The decision of where to make an eye movement is thought to be driven primarily by responses to stimuli in neurons' receptive fields (RFs) in oculomotor areas, including the frontal eye field (FEF) of prefrontal cortex. It is also thought that a saccade may be generated when the accumulation of this activity in favor of one location or another reaches a threshold. However, in the reading and scene perception fields, it is well known that the properties of the stimulus at the fovea often affect when the eyes leave that stimulus. We propose that if FEF plays a role in generating eye movements, t

Comparison of associated heterophoria measurements using the Mallett test for near vision and the Sheedy Disparometer.

The Mallett test for near vision and the Sheedy Disparometer are compared in terms of their ability to measure associated heterophoria. Twenty-two asymptomatic subjects were used. With the Disparometer, ten of these subjects, familiar with making prism vergence measurements, exhibited stable forced vergence fixation disparity curves, and the associated heterophoria values using both instruments were not significantly different. However, the twelve subjects not familiar with making such measurements generated fluctuating, unstable fixation disparity curves, and the associated heterophoria value

Visual facial grasp.

Some patients with degenerative neurological diseases have a release of the vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR), as detected by passive head movement during visual fixation on a moving target ("doll's eyes"maneuver). However, a positive doll's eyes sign might be induced by other defects and the purpose of this article is to describe a new ocular sign of cortical dysfunction, the visual facial grasp. We observed three patients, one with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), another with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a third with cortico-basal degeneration (CBD) all of whom appeared to demons

Impact of tear metrics on the reliability of perimetry in patients with dry eye.

BACKGROUND: The application of artificial tears before performing perimetry can improve the reliability and results of perimetry in patients with glaucoma and dry eye (DE). However, the effects of ocular surface and tear film conditions on perimetry measurements and reliability have not been fully characterized. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study investigated tear metrics in perimetry and assessed the relationships that existed among ocular surface condition, tear condition, and perimetry reliability. Forty-three eyes (43 patients) with DE disease according to the 2

Comprehensive dataset of features describing eye-gaze dynamics across multiple tasks.

We present a comprehensive dataset collected from 251 participants, which includes diverse features characterizing eye-gaze dynamics. Participants performed several tasks per session, typical in eye-tracking research: vanishing saccade, cued saccade, flickering cross, rotating ball, and free viewing. Covering these experimental paradigms, the dataset enables analysis of human eye phenomena such as oculomotor control and perceptual processing. As features, the dataset includes timestamped gaze coordinates, pupil sizes, and event classifications, labelled as fixations, saccades, or blinks. All t

Revealing the speed of implied motion signals associated with viewing other people's gaze.

Recent evidence has shown that exposure to static images depicting an agent actively gazing at an object leads to a motion adaptation effect in the direction of the gaze, suggesting that the attention of others is encoded as an implied agent-to-object motion. We examined whether this motion signal is associated with a specific speed by presenting the same static image used in previous studies, followed by test probes with differing speeds of dot motion. A peak significant motion adaptation effect was found for dot motion with a speed of 1.4° s-1. The effect disappeared when the agent was blind

Perceptual consequences of retinal stabilization with high-frequency non-stroboscopic displays.

During natural fixation, small eye movements continually modulate the input to the retina. Previous studies have shown that this motion enhances sensitivity to fine spatial detail, a conclusion supported by findings of reduced sensitivity to high-but not low-spatial frequencies when stimuli are immobilized on the retina for brief periods of time. Most prior retinal stabilization studies have relied on fast-phosphor cathode ray tube (CRT) displays or adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (AOSLOs), both of which deliver temporally pulsed stimulation. This raises the question of whether
