The COVID-19 pandemic has been very destructive to and compromised the functioning of all nations' public health systems. In the absence of a vaccine, healthcare workers have been employed to relentlessly fight against COVID-19. The psychological status of healthcare workers during the pandemic in countries with limited resources, notably Bangladesh, remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the psychological states of frontline and non-frontline Bangladeshi healthcare workers during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. An online cross-sectional study was conducted from May

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI), characterized by psychological distress from morally transgressive events, has been predominantly studied in military personnel but has gained increased attention in healthcare workers (HCWs) since the COVID-19 pandemic.
SOURCES OF DATA: In this review, we narratively synthesize literature on the causes, risks, consequences, and interventions of MI in HCWs.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: There is consensus that the COVID-19 pandemic presented HCWs with unique challenges such as fear of infection and patients dying without family, which increased the risk of MI in HCWs.

Health worker burnout is not a new phenomenon; it existed before the COVID-19 pandemic but has worsened since. Organizations have implemented various interventions to help staff recover from burnout, but few have focused on preventing or addressing sources of burnout. This article addresses this gap by focusing on promising practices and interventions that can be utilized to prevent and address burnout. By using a mixed-method approach, we learned that listening to frontline staff is essential for creating a short list of interventions that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of different

Pakistan has 40 Super High Risk Union Councils (SHRUCs) where polio has been persistently endemic, and community relationships have been a persistent challenge due to campaign fatigue and violent, organised resistance. This study aimed to gather perspectives from frontline workers in these areas to improve community engagement. We conducted participant observation, over 100 interviews, and held Human-centred Design inspired sessions with 171 teams of frontline polio staff from 2020 to 2022 in the SHRUCs of a major city in Pakistan. The results show that frontline polio workers repeatedly visit

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mental health of healthcare workers worldwide, with frontline personnel experiencing heightened rates of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. This mixed-methods study aimed to assess the mental health toll of COVID-19 on healthcare workers in Malawi. A cross-sectional survey utilising the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5 (PC-PTSD-5) was conducted among 109 frontline healthcare workers. The community health workers (CHWs) for COVID Response and Resilient Communities initiative further established CHWs as a critical public health workforce through substantial investment in CHW-led activities. The initiative supported CHWs at 67 sites nationwide to mitigate the most severe consequences of COVID-19 among vulnerable populations while strengthening community capacity to address future public health threats in the United States. It also created opportunities for CHWs to serve as leaders in evaluating their own profession. Based on a review of the literature regarding CHW involvemen

BACKGROUND: Caregivers facing mental and social stressors risk negative outcomes. The UNICEF Caring for the Caregiver package is a counselling approach and behaviour change intervention that can be integrated into routine home-visiting by frontline workers, in a demand-responsive way, at a population level. We aimed to evaluate caregiver outcomes and explore intervention experiences in six low-income and middle-income countries.
METHODS: Using a non-randomised pragmatic design, we recruited caregivers of children using community-based sampling. Caregivers reported dose exposure and completed

Stress is associated with numerous chronic health conditions, both mental and physical. However, the heterogeneity of these associations at the individual level is poorly understood. While data generated from individuals in their day-to-day lives "in the wild" may best represent the heterogeneity of stress, gathering these data and separating signals from noise is challenging. In this work, we report findings from a major data collection effort using Digital Health Technologies (DHTs) and frontline healthcare workers. We provide insights into stress "in the wild", by using robust methods for i

Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are routinely exposed to distressing and potentially traumatic events during frontline care, yet receive limited structure training to manage such exposure. Psychological first aid (PFA) training has been widely disseminated among emergency responders and is increasingly being adapted for HCWs; however, its acceptability, implementation, and use in routine care remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore how an adapted PFA training programme was perceived, implemented, and used by HCWs in routine care, and to identify the mechanisms and contextual
