Gelatinous transformation of the bone marrow in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Gelatinous transformation of the bone marrow is a rare disease characterised by a focal marrow hypoplasia, fat atrophy and accumulation of extracellular mucopolysaccharides abundant in hyaluronic acid, which is often associated with extreme malnutrition and weight loss. There are only two reports describing its association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). One described underlying diseases in 155 cases of gelatinous transformation of the bone marrow and found one case with clinical diagnosis of SLE, but no clinical details were provided. The other described three SLE patients with gelat

[Mucin-secreting tumor of the appendix with large gelatinous effusion].

The authors report a case of a mucinous tumour of the appendix with a large muco-gelatinous effusion detected as a result of massive abdominal compression. The mucinous mass occupied the entire abdominal cavity and was compressing the abdominal vascular trunks. Increases in CEA, Ca 19.9 and Ca 50 were recorded. The abdominal CT scan was of fundamental importance for diagnosing the condition. Surgery was performed consisting in removal of the mucinous abdominal mass, the appendix and part of the caecum. The postoperative course was favourable with rapid restoration of abdominal organic function

Cross-linking and characterisation of gelatin matrices for biomedical applications.

Cross-linking of gelatin A and B with N,N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethyl-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) was optimised by varying the NHS/EDC molar ratio at constant EDC concentration. Native and cross-linked gelatin gels were characterised using the degree of swelling, the number of free amine groups, the phase transition temperature, and titration of the carboxylic acid residues. The cross-linking reaction was most efficient at a NHS to EDC molar ratio of 0.2. At higher NHS/EDC molar ratios, the reaction of EDC with NHS becomes more pronounced, thereby reduc

Effect of sodium chloride on bakers' yeast growing in gelatin.

In recent years, industrial fermentation researchers have shifted their attention from liquid to solid and semisolid culture conditions. We converted liquid cultures to the semisolid mode by adding high levels of gelatin. Previous studies on liquid cultures have revealed the inhibitory activity of mineral salts, such as NaCl, on the fermentation of sugars by yeasts. We made a kinetic study of the effects of 1 to 5% (wt/vol) NaCl on the alcoholic fermentations of glucose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a growth medium containing 16% gelatin. Our results showed that the effect of high salt conten

Vanillin cross-linked chitosan gelatin membrane for potential hemodialysis applications.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) causes the buildup of metabolic waste in the body, requiring hemodialysis to replace the kidneys' filtering function. The main challenge in hemodialysis is the membrane's effectiveness, which is often limited by hemocompatibility issues. Therefore, improving membrane materials to enhance hemocompatibility and remove uremic toxins remains a key focus of research. In this study, we used modified natural polymers as materials for hemodialysis membranes. Our goal was to develop chitosan (Cs)-based membranes crosslinked with vanillin (Va) and blended with gelatin (Gel

PLA/gelatin/ethyl cellulose nanofiber: performance optimization and strawberry preservation.

BACKGROUND: As the demand for eco-friendly food packaging rises, biodegradable electrospun fiber membranes have attracted wide attention. However, existing single-component membranes face limitations such as insufficient mechanical properties, unstable functional release, and weak antioxidant/antibacterial activity. This work innovatively created a polylactic acid (PLA)/gelatin/ethyl cellulose ternary electrospun fiber membrane (PEG) by encasing low-cost citric acid (CA) and vitamin E/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (VE/HP-β-CD) complexes to enhance functionality and stability. RESULTS: Scanning

Injectable gelatin-PEG hydrogels obtained via cytochrome C-mediated polymerization.

Injectable hydrogels capable of in situ gelation under physiological conditions are highly attractive for minimally invasive surgery and locoregional drug delivery. We herein report three novel injectable hydrogels composed of gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDA), crosslinked through a Fenton-like radical polymerization mediated by cytochrome C (CyC) in the presence of H2O2 and L-ascorbic acid. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of an injectable hydrogel formulation in which CyC is used as a redox mediator for radical polymerization.

Gelatin Hydrogel Crosslinking: From Molecular Design to Functional Soft Materials.

Gelatin hydrogels combine biological origin, biodegradability, abundant chemical functionality, and broad processability, but their native thermoreversible physical networks generally lack the stability required for sustained operation. Crosslinking overcomes this limitation while regulating hydration, mechanics, transport, degradation, and responsiveness. This review examines gelatin hydrogel crosslinking from a structure-property-function perspective, connecting molecular design with physicochemical characterization and functional performance. Temperature-induced gelation and ion-mediated ph

Gelatin-Based Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes for Treatment of Intrauterine Adhesion.

As the leading cause of uterine factor infertility, intrauterine adhesion (IUA) poses a severe threat to the fertility and mental health of women at childbearing age. However, the efficacy of the present clinical treatments is unsatisfactory. There remains an urgent need to develop a safe, effective, and clinically feasible therapeutic strategy to restore the damaged endometrium. Here, we fabricated a gelatin-based electrospun nanofibrous membrane (GENM) via electrospinning and chemical crosslinking technique and characterized its properties. The anti-fibrotic and pro-angiogenic effects of GEN

Tough and biodegradable film from modified carboxymethyl cellulose crosslinked gelatin.

Gelatin's renewable and biodegradable properties establish it as a promising alternative to fossil-based plastics. However, extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonding in gelatin restricts chain mobility, resulting in limited processing capabilities. This study utilizes aldehyde-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose fibers as a cross-linking agent for gelatin, enhancing intermolecular interactions by substituting hydrogen bonds with dynamic covalent bonds. Through modification of the dynamic covalent network structure, the gelatin film exhibits substantially improved mechanical and thermal prop

Biodegradable and Flexible Wood-Gelatin Composites for Soft Actuating Systems.

Compliant materials are indispensable for many emerging soft robotics applications. Hence, concerns regarding sustainability and end-of-life options for these materials are growing, given that they are predominantly petroleum-based and non-recyclable. Despite efforts to explore alternative bio-derived soft materials like gelatin, they frequently fall short in delivering the mechanical performance required for soft actuating systems. To address this issue, we reinforced a compliant and transparent gelatin-glycerol matrix with structure-retained delignified wood, resulting in a flexible and enti

Gelatin-Based Ingestible Impedance Sensor to Evaluate Gastrointestinal Epithelial Barriers.

Low-profile and transient ingestible electronic capsules for diagnostics and therapeutics can replace widely used yet invasive procedures such as endoscopies. Several gastrointestinal diseases such as reflux disease, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and eosinophilic esophagitis result in increased intercellular dilation in epithelial barriers. Currently, the primary method of diagnosing and monitoring epithelial barrier integrity is via endoscopic tissue biopsies followed by histological imaging. Here, a gelatin-based ingestible electronic capsule that can monitor epithelial barriers
