Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with AIDS.

All health care providers must become increasingly aware of the early signs and symptoms of AIDS as KS frequently appears in the head, neck, and oral regions. Dentists are responsible for recognizing these lesions, especially the early lesions, providing dental treatment as appropriate, and for referring patients with AIDS for counseling and treatment that cannot be provided in their office. Early detection of KS is particularly important for patients receiving dental treatment. The dentist must be careful not to further compromise the patient's health by extensive or stressful dental treatmen

Gingival Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia and Cancer: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an oral potentially malignant disorder. Forms that affect only one tissue are poorly studied, especially the exclusively gingival PVL (gPVL), which may have a more increased malignant transformation potential. The aim of the present study was to characterise the gPVL and its risk of malignant transformation to better raise awareness of this specific disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The systematic review was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Only articles reporting primary studies, case reports and case serie

[Isolated neurofibroma of oral cavity. An unusual manifestation case report .].

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibroma (NF) is a benign tumor originated from neuronal cells, and can occur alone or multiple. Its manifestation within the oral cavity is rare, with a wide age range of appearance. This tumor occurs in a sessile-based nodular form, with slow growth and variable size. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to present a clinical case of a solitary neurofibroma, of rare manifestation, in the oral mucosa. METHODOLOGY: an 86-year-old male patient attends the dental office with a right side facial asymmetry, and without pain. At the time of patient inspection, a nodular lesion

Malignant melanoma of the mandibular gingiva: a rare occurrence.

Primary mucosal malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is a rare tumor. It accounts for only 0.2-8% of all malignant melanomas. This malignancy commonly affects male subjects and is more frequently seen on the hard palate and maxillary gingiva. The peak age for diagnosis of oral melanoma is between 55 and 65 years. A biopsy is required to establish a diagnosis. Ablative surgery with tumor-free margins remains the treatment of choice. It has a much poorer prognosis than its counterpart on the skin. Here, we present a case of malignant melanoma of the mandibular lingual gingiva in a 55-year-old m

Congenital epulis: a rare benign tumor in the newborn.

Congenital epulis (CE) of the newborn is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that presents at birth. It occurs usually as a single mass with various sizes, although some multiple lesions have also been reported. The lesion is more common in female neonates and normally affects the maxillary alveolar ridge. Rare recurrence and no malignant alteration have also been reported. This condition may interfere with respiration, feeding or adequate closure of the mouth. A decisive diagnosis is made by histopathologic analysis as other newborn lesions can be incorrectly diagnosed as CE. This article present

Primary and exclusive gingival localization of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Case report.

A case of primary and exclusive gingival localization of a non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) personally observed at the Surgical Out-patients Unit of the Department of Dentistry at the Umberto I Hospital in Rome, is described. A 71 year-old caucasian male was referred by his private dentist because of a severe pain at the soft tissue of the mandible even after dental, neurologic and parodontal treatments. At clinical examination, a severe gingival swelling in the symphysis region with hard bleeding, palpable lymph nodes and no important evidence in radiographic and CT examinations were found. After i

Gingival angiosarcoma: histopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

Angiosarcomas of the head and neck are rare tumors, the intra-oral localization being considered exceptionally in the specialty literature. The diagnosis of this kind of tumor in gingival location is difficult, both to the rarity of this lesion at this site, and to the various histopathological aspects. We present the case of 70 years old male patient clinically diagnosed with tumor of the alveolar crest of mandible, which, histopathologically, associated areas of predominant vascular proliferation, with areas of carcinoma and sarcoma. Immunohistochemical, the tumor was investigated for antibo

[Congenital granular-cell epulis. A histochemical case study].

Following a review of the literature the author reports the various different hypotheses regarding the origin and nature of congenital epulis, a pedunculated neoformation with a gingival or more rarely mandibular localisation. Epulides present dimensions varying from a few millimetres to a couple of centimetres and they may exceptionally be multiple in the same subject. A case of granulocellular congenital epulis is reported covered by integral mucosa, located in correspondence with the maximally gingiva in a paramedical site. The epulis, removed a few days after birth since it prevented the c

Strawberry-like gingival tumor as the first clinical sign of Wegener's granulomatosis.

BACKGROUND: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a complex disease, characterized by a necrotizing vasculitis that usually involves the upper airways, lungs, and kidneys; occasionally, other organs may also be affected. Because of the severity and rapid progression of the disease, early diagnosis and treatment are critical; this type of vasculitis is potentially fatal if left unchecked. METHODS: A 64-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of a gingival mass that had appeared 2 months before and had grown rapidly. In the previous months she complained of malaise without weight loss. An in

Gingival enlargement as a manifestation of tuberous sclerosis: case report and periodontal management.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal-dominant inherited disease involving many organs of the body. Oral manifestations include gingival enlargement, fibromas, and dental enamel pitting. The report presents a case of tuberous sclerosis with gingival enlargement histologically consistent with angiofibroma, describes its successful periodontal management, and reviews the literature associated with oral manifestations of tuberous sclerosis. METHODS: A 26-year-old white male presented to the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, New York University College of Dentistry, with

Peripheral ossifying fibroma mimicking oral Kaposi's sarcoma in an immunosuppressed patient with Behçet's disease: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an HHV-8-associated angioproliferative neoplasm occurring preferentially in immunosuppressed individuals, with oral involvement documented in up to 65% of HIV/AIDS patients. Several benign reactive gingival lesions, including peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), may clinically mimic oral KS, creating a significant diagnostic challenge. In patients with established systemic KS, newly detected oral lesions carry a high risk of diagnostic anchoring bias, making HHV-8 (LANA-1) immunohistochemistry indispensable for definitive diagnosis. [Primary choriocarcinoma of the maxillary gingival].

INTRODUCTION: Primary non-gestational extragonadal choriocarcinomas are uncommon and their head and neck localization more exceptional. OBSERVATION: We report on a primary choriocarcinoma case of the mandibular gingivae in a 26-year-old woman who presented with pulmonary and renal metastasis. Complete response (clinical, biological and radiological) was achieved with combined chemotherapy according to APE regimen associating actinomycin, cisplatin and etoposid. The patient was free of disease 4 years after therapy completion. DISCUSSION: Primary gingival mandibular choriocarcinoma is very ra

Epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumour of the mandibular gingiva.

The epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumour (EOGCT) is considered as a solid 'neoplastic' variant of the calcifying odontogenic cyst and is an uncommon lesion for which various names have been proposed over the years. We describe here an extraosseous case occurring on the edentulous mandibular gingiva in the right bicuspid area of a 70-year-old woman. The lesion was a painless nodule that appeared clinically as a hyperplastic mass, which was considered to be of reactive nature. Radiographic examination showed a localised resorption of the underlying mandibular bone. The tumour was excised; th

Etiology and Pathogenesis of Gingivobuccal Cancers.

This review explores the epidemiology, molecular mechanisms, and immune interactions underlying gingivobuccal squamous cell carcinoma, a distinct oral cancer subtype strongly associated with tobacco and areca nut use. It highlights key genetic mutations, epigenetic alterations, and tumor microenvironment factors that drive carcinogenesis and influence prognosis. The role of oral potentially malignant disorders in early detection is emphasized, along with the importance of molecular subtyping for risk stratification. Advances in understanding tumor biology provide promising opportunities for de

Clinicopathological profile of clear cell oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological profile of clear cell oral squamous cell carcinoma (CCOSCC). STUDY DESIGN: A detailed search was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, LILACS, Web of Science, and Gray Literature sources. RESULTS: Seventeen cases of CCOSCC were found across 16 selected articles. CCOSCC affected mainly the mandibular gingiva, maxillary gingiva, and tongue of adults with a mean age of 60.1 years old, with a slight preference for males. The cases usually manifested as painful ulcerated lesions. Microscopically, they were lined by

Oral gingival metastasis: A diagnostic dilemma.

Oral cavity is a rare target for metastasis with an incidence of 1% among all oral cancers. In 24% of such cases, oral metastasis is the first indication of an undiagnosed primary. Metastatic oral malignancies have been reported in the mandible, tongue, and gingiva. Although gingival metastasis has been reported from lung, prostate, rectal carcinoma in men and carcinoma of breast, adrenal glands, and genitalia in females, gingival metastasis from carcinoma of the penis has not been reported. Herein, a case of metastatic gingival carcinoma that developed after extraction of teeth from primary c

Congenital epulis in newborn. Case report.

Congenital granular cell lesion, or congenital epulis, is a rare lesion of the newborn. The sight of a newborn infant with congenital epulis can be startling for both parents and healthcare professionals. The lesion appears most commonly in the maxillary alveolar ridge, with predominance in females. The etiology and histogenesis of the lesion remain obscure. This lesion can pose a risk of airway obstruction or can interfere with feeding. The report presented here describes a case of congenital granular cell lesion in the left maxillary region. The lesion was causing a feeding problem and, henc
