Surgical Outcomes Following Combined Barbed Palato-Pharyngeal Surgery and Coblator-Assisted Midline Glossectomy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

UNLABELLED: A 37-year-old woman with a diagnosis of Behçet's syndrome, treated with colchicine and prednisolone, maintained low disease activity for a period of 10 years, after which, she developed a new episode of anterior uveitis. A cycle of high dose systemic corticosteroids was required but the patient presented with a new flare during dose tapering. A decision to initiate a corticosteroid-sparing agent was then made, with an initially satisfactory response. However, 3 months later the ocular symptoms recurred, and a new bout of oral ulceration appeared concurrently. As a result, adalimuma

A Retrospective Analysis of 8457 Glossectomy Cases Over 15 Years-The Boon and Bane of Radical Neck Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Glossectomy is a commonly performed procedure in head and neck oncology, primarily for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Radical neck dissection (RND) is still being combined with glossectomy to manage lymph node metastases, yet its impact on postoperative outcomes in glossectomy patients remains largely underexplored. METHODS: This study utilized data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) to analyze 30-day postoperative outcomes in 8457 patients who underwent partial or extended glossectomy, with or w

Survival, functional, and quality of life outcomes between total glossectomy with and without total laryngectomy: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: A total glossectomy (TG) may be required for advanced tongue tumors. TG with total laryngectomy (TGL) may be indicated in some cases with tumor extension into the larynx or high risk of aspiration. Total glossectomy with laryngeal preservation (TGLP) may preserve phonation ability relative to TGL, yet TGLP may increase the risk of aspiration. METHODS: For this narrative review, we performed a comprehensive literature search of studies relevant to TG and TGL. Clinical studies investigating survival, functional outcomes, and quality of life in following TGLP or TGL were of particula

Subtotal and total glossectomies with or without total laryngectomy - Does laryngeal preservation impact oncological and functional outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: Subtotal (SG) and total glossectomies (TG) represent surgical options for advanced oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Associated laryngeal preservation maintains phonation but increases the risks of aspiration pneumonia and, potentially, local recurrence in the vallecular/supraglottic area. To mitigate these risks, SG/TG with total laryngectomy (TL) may be performed. This study evaluates functional and oncological outcomes of SG/TG with/without TL, focusing on the clinical impact of laryngeal preservation. METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study analysed p

Prognostic Value of Primary Total Glossectomy in Tongue Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Survival Outcomes.

Background/Objectives: Total glossectomy (TG) is among the most radical operations in head and neck oncology. While it can achieve local control in advanced oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma, survival and functional outcomes are inconsistently reported, and pooled estimates remain limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate survival, functional recovery, and prognostic factors following primary TG. Methods: We conducted a proportional meta-analysis of studies reporting outcomes after primary TG for oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Studies combining TG with laryngectomy, salvage

Eight years of follow-up--uvulopalatopharyngoplasty combined with midline glossectomy as a treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

In 22 patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty was combined with a midline glossectomy of the dorsum of the tongue. The body mass index (BMI) was normal in 13 cases and abnormal in 9. Daytime polysomnography was performed in all cases both preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. In 16 patients another daytime polysomnography was performed after 8.4 years. The patients also answered a questionnaire 11, 33, 43 and 98 months postoperatively. The apnoea index (AI) was reduced in 82% of cases 12 months postoperatively, being reduced by 50% in 59% of cases and normalized

Survival and functional outcomes after total glossectomy with total laryngectomy: Case series from a high-volume tertiary institution.

OBJECTIVES: Total glossectomy with total laryngectomy (TGTL) is indicated for some cases of advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma. However, this procedure is rarely performed, as quality of life outcomes are often considered poor. Consequently, few studies to date have reported survival and functional outcomes in patients undergoing TGTL. Here, we present the largest cases series to date of TGTL patients and provide relevant data on survival and functional outcomes. METHODS: Patients met inclusion criteria if they underwent TGTL (concurrent or staged) indicated for head and neck squamous cell
