The 4-year follow-up results of a clinical trial are reported. The clinical results of the treatment of buccal recession were analyzed comparing the outcomes of a guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedure with nonresorbable membranes and a 2-step mucogingival procedure consisting of a coronally-positioned free gingival graft in two groups of 25 patients each. The final root coverage was 73.07% in the test group (GTR) and 72.3% in the control group (mucogingival surgery). In the test group, statistically significant recession reduction, probing depth reduction, clinical attachment level gain,

Furcation defects pose a significant challenge in periodontal therapy. While regenerative approaches are generally preferred, resective procedures may remain essential depending on defect morphology and root configuration. This case series aims to demonstrate the clinical benefits of combining resective and regenerative techniques using periodontal microsurgery to treat maxillary molars with deep trifurcation defects. Three patients with extensive Class II trifurcation defects in maxillary molars, unresponsive to prior non-surgical periodontal therapy, were managed using a dental operating mic

Background Angiogenesis is an important biological event in periodontal regeneration, as early vascular support is necessary for oxygen delivery, nutrient transport, and tissue healing. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes may influence this vascular response depending on their material properties. Aim To compare the angiogenic response of resorbable collagen and non-resorbable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) GTR membranes using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. Materials and methods Thirty fertilized chicken eggs were divided equally into three groups: control, colla

BACKGROUND: Proper wound healing after regenerative surgical procedures is an essential issue for clinical success. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and application of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) are common means to regenerate periodontal tissues. Both methods bear considerable advantages due to their special characteristics, but also go along with certain disadvantages. Today, there is no consensus in the literature whether GTR or EMD show better results regarding early wound healing, which is considered a crucial stage in periodontal regeneration. Therefore, the aim of the present system

Obtaining predictable root coverage has become an important part of periodontal therapy. The purpose of this study was to compare two techniques of obtaining root coverage. The two techniques were the connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft and guided tissue regeneration with a bioabsorbable polylactic acid softened with citric acid ester membrane. The connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft had a mean root coverage of 97.1%, and the guided tissue regeneration procedure produced a mean root coverage of 75.1%. This difference was not statistically sig

BACKGROUND: The combination of collagen in bone grafts is being used because of its properties that accentuate the degree of regeneration. Furcation involvement poses challenge to the prognosis of a tooth, the use of bone grafts and a combination of grafts and membranes have proved to be beneficial in the treatment of furcation defects. Thus, the aim of the present study was to clinically evaluate and compare the effectiveness of collagen fiber bone graft with and without a membrane in the treatment of mandibular Grade II furcation defects.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the healing events and compare the effects of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using 3 different membranes: a weakly cross-linked bioabsorbable bovine collagen membrane; a strongly cross-linked bioabsorbable bovine collagen membrane; and a non-resorbable ePTFE membrane. Twenty adult female beagle dogs with naturally occurring periodontitis were subjected to periodontal probing and scaling. In both right and left mandibular quadrants, mucoperiosteal flaps were raised, and after debridement, the roots of experimental premolar teeth received apical

A deep, long-standing recession on a mandibular incisor was treated in a 56-year-old female patient. The tooth was tilted buccally and was scheduled for extraction. The recession was 8 mm deep, with a pocket depth of 1 mm and no keratinized tissue. The recession was treated by guided tissue regeneration; the membrane was left in place for 4 weeks. The tooth was extracted along with marginal tissues 5 months after the removal of the membrane. At the time of extraction, 4 mm of root coverage had been achieved and 3 mm of keratinized tissue were measured buccally. Histologic measurements showed t

PURPOSE: To evaluate the treatment outcomes after guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with a bioabsorbable membrane in Class II furcation defects in mandibular molars. The open flap debridement (OFD) was used as the control.
METHODS: Nine patients, with two comparable Class II furcation defects were included in the study. After initial preparation, the defects were randomly assigned in each patient to either GTR-group or OFD-group. Clinical parameters and standardized radiographs were obtained at baseline and 6 months after the surgeries. The radiographs were analyzed by subtraction radiography.

The aim of this study was to clarify the adjunctive effect of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) on expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane guided tissue regeneration (GTR)-based root coverage by creating gingival recessions in beagle dogs. Recessions were treated with GTR + EMD, GTR alone, or neither GTR nor EMD (control). The control group was characterized by long junctional epithelium and little bone formation. The GTR + EMD group showed a statistically significant increase (P < .01) in new bone and cementum formation compared with the GTR group. The results of the present investigation sugg

BACKGROUND: Different filling materials have been associated with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in order to improve its regenerative potential and predictability. Anorganic bovine bone (ABB) has demonstrated biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties; however, there are limited data regarding its performance in the treatment of intrabony defects. This investigation aimed to evaluate the clinical outcome of the association of anorganic bovine bone with cellulose membranes in intrabony defects after 6 months.
METHODS: Twenty-six paired intrabony defects were selected from 11 non-smoking

Four clinical centers, using the Brånemark System and with personnel trained in the use of Gore-Tex Augmentation Material (GTAM), participated in a prospective study of 45 patients 18 to 83 years of age. A total of 55 implants were placed with membranes because of local bony defects (fenestration or dehiscence). Dehiscence and fenestration defects were evaluated as one group. The mean initial defect height was 4.7 mm (SD = 3.0). After healing, the remaining defect height was reduced to 1.1 mm (SD = 2.3). The decrease in surface exposure was significant. Complications were primarily attributed
