A 14-month-old Japanese Black heifer was evaluated on Day 0 (D 0) for enlargement of the right ovary (RO). Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) revealed that the RO was markedly enlarged and multicystic, while the left ovary (LO) was small and inactive. The presumptive diagnosis was granulosa-theca cell tumour (GTCT), which was confirmed by markedly elevated plasma anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) of 4.42 ng/ml. Therefore, ovariectomy of the RO was the treatment of choice. The heifer was checked by TRUS and blood sampling on D 42, D 63 and immediately before ovariectomy on D 85. On D 42, TRUS did no

Autosomal dominant polycystic disease is a multisystem inherited condition affecting the kidneys and is an important cause of end-stage renal disease. Patients with autosomal dominant polycystic disease experience symptoms related to size and cystic nature of their kidneys, which can be difficult to manage. Traditionally, the only surgical option for management was open bilateral/unilateral native nephrectomy, which carried with it significant morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it was deemed unsafe and rarely performed. However, surgery for autosomal dominant polycystic disease has evolved ra

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic liver surgery following previous resections poses significant challenges due to adhesions and altered anatomy. Hand-assisted laparoscopic liver resection (HALR) combines the tactile advantages of open surgery with minimally invasive techniques, potentially benefitting patients undergoing repeat hepatectomy. This study aims to assess the safety and efficacy of HALR for repeat hepatectomy and compare these outcomes with those of an open liver resection (OR).
METHODS: A retrospective study included patients who underwent repeat hepatectomy via HALR or OR from January 201

PURPOSE: Small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours (SI-NETs) are the most common malignancy of the small bowel. Curative treatment is surgical, with exploratory laparotomy considered the standard approach. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of minimally invasive surgery compared to open approach for SI-NETs at the Endocrine surgical unit at Uppsala University Hospital.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent surgery for SI-NET between 2013 and 2023 at Uppsala University Hospital. Variables such as operative time, length of hospital stay, use of analgesia an

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic living-donor nephrectomy (LDN) exerts systemic effects causing transaminitis and increased urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalm (NGAL) excretion. Hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, which tends to be shorter with less pneumoperitoneum, may be hypothesized to produce less systemic stimulation than total laparoscopic LDN.
METHODS: Serial urine and serum samples were collected from 15 patients undergoing HALDN. Samples were analyzed for NGAL and kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1) levels preoperatively and 24 hours post-surgery. Data relating to alani

BACKGROUND: Laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) surgery has developed as a new surgical modality that has increased cosmetic benefits over conventional endoscopic surgery. However, there are no reports about LESS surgery in common bile duct exploration. This report presents a LESS surgery to manage CBD stones by laparoscopic choledochotomy and C-tube placement with favorable outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective review analyzes 13 patients who underwent LESS CBD exploration with C-tube drainage for choledocholithiasis. The technique is herein described and the outcomes measured. The Radius Su

OBJECTIVES: Hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy has become an established technique for live-donor organ retrieval. In most cases, the left kidney is removed because of its more favorable anatomic relations, particularly with the major abdominal vessels.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present 2 cases of live donation in which a hand-assisted laparoscopic approach was used to remove the right kidney as indicated by the presence of aberrant vascular anatomy, 1 being situs inversus totalis, the other a left-sided inferior vena cava.

OBJECTIVES: In our previous article, we proposed the novel four-handed technique (FHT) for total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), which, according to us, is more helpful compared to the traditional TLH route. The objectives of the study were to analyze the FHT-TLH feasibility and efficiency by comparing some surgical outcomes recorded from 750 FHT-TLH performed in our hospital to literature data about the traditional TLH route and to underline the great opportunity this novel technique offers to the young specialists and residents to be more confident with gynecological laparoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Transumbilical laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy (TULAA) is the technique of choice for all types of appendicitis in our Department. It combines the advantages of laparoscopy (global vision and minimally invasion) and open surgery (lower cost). The objective was to assess the results of our TULAA series and compare them to the results of standard laparoscopic appendectomies (SLA) performed during the same period.
METHODS: Retrospective review of total appendectomies performed since TULAA introduction (September 2003 to December 2015) with statistic analysis of the results.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility, operative morbidity and oncological outcome of laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) radical cystectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients with clinical stage T1-T2 bladder cancer underwent a LESS radical cystectomy. The mean (SD) age of the patients was 64.8 (8.6) years and their mean body mass index was 25.9 (2.7) kg/m(2). The procedure was done via a single-incision laparoscopic surgery port using a rigid 5-mm 30° long-shaft laparoscope in addition to the two working instruments. A 7-cm Pfannenstiel incision was made to remove the specimens and to allo

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate helpful tips and tricks for the successful use of transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) for performing sacrocolpopexy and salpingo-oophorectomy surgery. Minimally invasive approaches for treating pelvic organ prolapse via sacrocolpopexy have traditionally included laparoscopy either with or without robotic assistance. Transvaginal NOTES is a novel minimally invasive approach that both avoids abdominal incisions and provides improved visualization; however, it can be technically challenging.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin is a brain-gut peptide with GH-releasing and appetite-inducing properties. Because ghrelin is secreted mainly by the stomach, fasting levels fall after distal gastrectomy. The vagal nerve is responsible for periprandial changes. The presents study investigated the impact of preserving the celiac branch of the vagus nerve during laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy on postoperative ghrelin secretion.
METHOD: Between May 2009 and July 2010, 42 consecutive patients who underwent LADG were divided into two groups, the first in which the celiac branch of the vagus was preser

INTRODUCTION: Although laparoendoscopic single-site adrenalectomy (LESS-A) is feasible, it is still considered as a challenging procedure because of technical limitations. Making an optimal retraction is one of major obstacles in LESS-A, and it sometimes requires additional ports or needlescopic devices. Internal organ retractor (IOR) is a novel retraction device that is applied intracorporeally without additional port. In this study, we investigated the clinical usefulness of IOR in LESS-A.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of 73 consecutive patients who underwent LESS-A from March 2009

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: For patients with upper tract transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC), nephroureterectomy with removal of a bladder cuff is the standard of care. Historically, it has been performed using two incisions or one large incision extending from the lateral flank to the symphysis pubis. We describe an alternative using endoscopic management of the bladder cuff combined with hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL) nephroureterectomy. We compared our results using these minimally invasive advances with those of a contemporary open nephroureterectomy series.

Primary splenic angiosarcoma (PSA) is an unusual and highly malignant vascular tumour with a high rate of metastatic. Moreover, the research on prognosis of the disease is poor. The epidemiology, etiology, clinical diagnosis and treatment of the disease remain challenging, because case reports of the disease are few in number. In accordance with other malignant tumors, PSA is very aggressive, and the majority of patients in which this disease is found are at an advanced stage. Almost all patients die within 12 mo of diagnosis irrespective of treatment. We report here a woman who had complained

Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a precursor of esophageal adenocarcinoma and is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is often preceded by a hiatal hernia. We describe a case of esophageal adenocarcinoma arising in long-segment BE (LSBE) associated with a hiatal hernia that was successfully treated with a laparoscopic transhiatal approach (LTHA) without thoracotomy. The patient was a 42-year-old male who had previously undergone laryngectomy and tracheal separation to avoid repeated aspiration pneumonitis. An ulcerative lesion was found in a hiatal hernia by endoscopy and superfic

Laparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy is a minimally invasive approach for esophageal cancer. However, a transhiatal procedure has not yet been established for en bloc mediastinal dissection. The purpose of this study was to present our novel procedure, hand-assisted laparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy, with a systematic procedure for en bloc mediastinal dissection. The perioperative outcomes of patients who underwent this procedure were retrospectively analyzed. Transhiatal subtotal mobilization of the thoracic esophagus with en bloc lymph node dissection distally from the carina was perf

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic major hepatectomy is expanding, but little data exist comparing surgical approaches. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that pure laparoscopic liver resection (PLAP) has advantages over hand-assisted (HALS) or hybrid (HYB) resection for major hemi-hepatectomy at two western centers.
METHODS: Using propensity score matching, 65 cases of HALS + HYB (18 hand-assisted and 47 hybrid) were matched to 65 cases of PLAP. Baseline characteristics were well matched for gender, age, ASA score, Childs A cirrhosis, right/left hepatectomy, malignancy, tumor size, and t
