Heterogeneous Presentations of Pharyngoesophageal Diverticula Occurring after Cervical Spine Surgery.

Dysphagia after anterior cervical spine surgery (ACSS) may be secondary to pharyngoesophageal diverticulum. Our objectives are to (1) highlight the heterogeneity in clinical presentation, (2) discuss pathophysiology and management, and (3) present a comprehensive literature review of these diverticula. All patients undergoing pharyngoesophageal diverticulum repair between 2013 and 2019 were identified. Cases with ACSS history underwent detailed review of clinical presentation, assessment, and management. Literature review and analysis of all reported ACSS-associated pharyngoesophageal divertic

Single-Port Robotic Removal of a Submucosal Foreign Body in the Distal Hypopharynx.

In this report, we present a 55-year-old female with cervical stenosis that underwent C5-C7 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery complicated by hardware failure requiring removal. One screw remained after transcervical hardware removal due to operative difficulty with the risk of exposing the hypopharyngeal submucosal space. The retained screw caused the patient significant discomfort and dysphagia prompting a transoral attempt at removal. Using a hypopharynx blade on an oral retractor for access, the single-port surgical robot successfully removed the foreign body from the distal h

A Comparison of Complications and Reoperations Between Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Versus Primary Arthrodesis Following Lisfranc Injury.

There is a lack of consensus in the literature regarding optimal treatment methods for Lisfranc injuries, and recent literature has emphasized the need to compare open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with primary arthrodesis (PA). The purpose of the current study is to compare reoperation and complication rates between ORIF and PA following Lisfranc injury in a private, outpatient, orthopaedic practice. A retrospective chart review was performed on patients undergoing operative intervention for Lisfranc injury between January 2009 and September 2015. A total of 196 patients met the incl

Risk Factors for Failure of Separated Instrument Removal: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This study aimed to systematically evaluate the risk factors associated with the failure of separated instrument removal. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library was performed to identify studies reporting on the success rates of separated instrument removal, covering the period from 1988 to 2025. The meta-analysis was performed using Stata 17.0. Seven studies encompassing 922 patients with separated instruments were included. The pooled success rate of separated instrument removal was 66%. Meta-analysis identified several significant risk factors for removal failure:

Does retained cement or hardware during 2-stage revision shoulder arthroplasty for infection increase the risk of recurrent infection?

BACKGROUND: When treating chronic prosthetic joint infection after shoulder arthroplasty, removal of the implants and cement is typically pursued because they represent a potential nidus for infection. However, complete removal can increase morbidity and compromise bone stock that is important for achieving stable revision implants. The purpose of this study is to compare the rates of repeat infection after 2-stage revision for prosthetic joint infection in patients who have retained cement or hardware compared to those who had complete removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analy

Surgical treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures with precontoured plates.

BACKGROUND: Plate fixation of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures has been shown to decrease nonunion, symptomatic malunion, and residual shoulder disability compared with nonoperative treatment. However hardware-related complications are a problem. The new features of the precontoured locking plates may reduce the need for hardware removal, thus maintaining the advantages of plate fixation. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients with displaced midshaft clavicular fractures treated with precontoured locking plates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From November 2008 to December 2012

Physeal Growth May Resume Following Removal of Transphyseal Epiphysiodesis Screws.

A 14 +6 year-old (bone age 13 +0 years) genetically 46, XX, phenotypic female patient underwent distal femur and proximal tibia screw epiphysiodesis for a leg length discrepancy related to overgrowth following juvenile ACL reconstruction. The patient was considering, but had not committed to, gender affirmation treatment (internally the patient felt male). The patient later started testosterone, which altered predictions of height and leg length discrepancy at maturity. Screws were removed to minimize overshortening of the previously long leg. Upon screw removal, modest growth of the operative

Secondary Surgery Following Lapidus Bunionectomy.

While the Lapidus bunionectomy is a common procedure utilized to address hallux valgus, the incidence of secondary surgery is not well established. Our primary goal was to determine the incidence of revision surgery and hardware removal following the Lapidus bunionectomy in addition to the risk factors associated with each. A retrospective nested case-control study of adult patients who underwent a Lapidus bunionectomy for symptomatic hallux valgus over a 9-year period was performed. The incidence rates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of secondary surgery in the 3 years following the procedu

A Comparison of Pronator Quadratus Preservation and Dissection Approaches for Volar Plating of Comminuted Intra-articular Distal Radius Fracture.

PURPOSE: Although the pronator quadratus (PQ) preservation approach for volar plating of distal radius fracture has been commonly used recently, its superiority to the conventional PQ dissection approach, especially for comminuted intra-articular distal radius fractures, has not been well established. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of PQ preservation for comminuted intra-articular fractures and to evaluate the healed PQ during hardware removal surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2014 to March 2019, 86 patients who underwent both volar plating for AO Foundation/O

Surgical Management for Olecranon Fractures in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Olecranon fractures are common upper-extremity fractures amenable to various surgical techniques. The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate surgical management strategies for olecranon fractures in adult patients. Two investigators independently screened articles from records obtained from MEDLINE, Embase, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library databases. The authors compared tension-band wiring (TBW) with plate fixation (PF) for the outcomes of complications and hardware removal. Subgroup analyses were conducted comparing randomized controlled trials with
