Embracing challenging complexity: exploring handwashing behavior from a combined socioecological and intersectional perspective in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Handwashing with soap is a cost-effective, efficient health behavior to prevent various diseases. Despite its immense health benefits, the lowest prevalence of handwashing is found in low-income countries. Here, its practice is not only determined by individual behavior, but also heavily shaped by deprivations in the social and structural ecology. Moreover, handwashing barriers are not equally experienced as overlapping social identities (e.g., age and gender) intersect and create inequities between members of different social groups. To embrace the complexities of handwashing beyo

Clinical Efficacy of Extracellular Vesicle Therapy in Periodontitis: Reduced Inflammation and Enhanced Regeneration.

Periodontitis, a prevalent inflammatory condition, affects the supporting structures of teeth, leading to significant oral health challenges. Traditional treatments have primarily focused on mechanical debridement, antimicrobial therapy, and surgery, which often fail to restore lost periodontal structures. Emerging as a novel approach in regenerative medicine, extracellular vesicle (EV) therapy, including exosomes, leverages nano-sized vesicles known for facilitating intercellular communication and modulating physiological and pathological processes. This study is a proof-of-concept type that

The lasting effects of childhood trauma on developing psychiatric symptoms: A population-based, large-scale comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) increases rates of psychiatric disorders and symptoms, however, the lasting effect of CT into adulthood has little exploration using large-scale samples. OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the prevalence of CT in a large sample of Chinese young adults, examining the risk factors of current psychological symptoms among those with CT experiences. METHODS: 117,769 college students were divided into CT and non-CT groups. The propensity score matching method balanced the confounding sociodemographic factors between the two groups, compared to 16 self-reported psych

Potential effects of hepatitis E virus infection in swine on public health in China.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a zoonotic pathogen, is the main cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. Swine serves as the main reservoir, and its infection is mainly transmitted via fecal-oral route. Due to huge consumption of pork in China, close human-swine interactions at pig farms likely contribute to high risk in zoonotic transmission of HEV. Thus, we aim to investigate the HEV prevalence in pig farm in seven provinces across the east to west China and estimate the potential effects of swine HEV on public health in China. In this study, serum samples of pig were collected for detection of anti-HE

Impact of neighborhood income inequality on adolescents' mental health. Results from the STARS study.

Over recent decades, there has been a simultaneous increase in income inequality and adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents in Western countries and especially in Sweden. Prior research on the relationship between income inequality and mental health has primarily focused on studies involving adults, yielding diverse findings regarding the nature of their association. Given the importance of relationships and comparisons to peers in immediate vicinity, we aimed to investigate the impact of neighborhood income inequality on mental health problems among seven-graders in Western Sweden.

Adding interactions to models of intersectional health inequalities: Comparing multilevel and conventional methods.

Examining health inequalities intersectionally is gaining in popularity and recent quantitative innovations, such as the development of intersectional multilevel methods, have enabled researchers to expand the number of dimensions of inequality evaluated while avoiding many of the theoretical and methodological limitations of the conventional fixed effects approach. Yet there remains substantial uncertainty about the effects of integrating numerous additional interactions into models: will doing so reveal statistically significant interactions that were previously hidden or explain away intera

Oral health and oral health-related behaviour in preschool children: evidence for a social gradient.

This study aims to investigate the social gradient in the reported oral health-related behaviour and oral health status of preschool children. Participants were 1,057 children born between October 2003 and July 2004 in Flanders, Belgium. Oral health examinations were performed by trained dentists when the children were 3 and 5 years old (respectively, in 2007 and 2009); data on dietary habits, oral hygiene habits and dental attendance of the children were obtained through structured questionnaires completed by the parents. Maternal educational level, measured in four categories, was used as a

Development of a balanced instrument to measure global health-related quality of life: The 13-MD.

Generic instruments are of interest in measuring global health-related quality of life (GHRQoL). Their applicability to all patients, regardless of their health profile, allows program comparisons of whether the patients share the same disease or not. In this setting, quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) instruments must consider GHRQoL to allow the best programs to emerge for more efficiency in health resource utilization. However, many differences may be perceived among the existing generic instruments relative to their composition, where dimensions related to physical aspects of health are gen

Homelessness and the use of acute psychiatric beds: findings from a one-day survey of adult acute and low-level secure psychiatric patients in North and South Thames regions.

This paper describes the impact of homelessness on the use of adult acute and low-level secure psychiatric beds in North and South Thames regions. We specifically focus on those homeless patients who no longer required the acute psychiatric facilities in order to determine the complement of accommodation and alternative services necessary to enable them to be discharged. A point prevalence survey of all patients occupying adult acute and low-level secure psychiatric beds in North and South Thames regions was carried out on 15 June 1994. All patients occupying adult acute and low-level secure p

Policy themes and instruments in WHO and UNICEF child food-environment guidance, 2015-2025: a computational content analysis.

In children's food environments, global guidance can shape policy discourse and instrument choice, but its content does not establish implementation or outcomes. In 2015-2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) published English-language guidance at the global level. A documented search, 2-author screening, and author-decision-masked expert review produced a corpus of 22 expert-refrozen documents (1,099 pages; 1,259 primary chunks). The BERTopic with document-capped discovery yielded six provisional clusters: food-marketing restrictions and chil

Exploring discordance between Health Literacy Questionnaire scores of people with RMDs and assessment by treating health professionals.

OBJECTIVES: We studied discordance between health literacy of people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) and assessment of health literacy by their treating health professionals, and explored whether discordance is associated with the patients' socioeconomic background. METHODS: Patients with RA, spondyloarthritis (SpA) or gout from three Dutch outpatient rheumatology clinics completed the nine-domain Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). Treating health professionals assessed their patients on each HLQ domain. Discordance per domain was defined as a ≥2-point difference on a 0-1

Assessment of vitamin A status of preschool children in a sub-Saharan African setting: comparative advantage of modified relative-dose response test.

A nationally-representative sample of 2,696 preschool children living in Congo was examined during Au gust-September 2003 to determine the rates of vitamin A deficiency. Ninety clusters of 30 children, aged six months to six years, were selected, using a randomized two-level cluster-sampling method. Vitamin A deficiency was determined by assessing the prevalence of active xerophthalmia (nightblindness and/or Bitot spots) in the cross-over sample of 2,696 individuals. A semi-quantitative seven-day dietary questionnaire was concurrently applied to the mothers of children enrolled to estimate the
