Stability, dynamics, and selectivity in the assembly of hydrogen-bonded hexameric capsules.

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was employed to monitor the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded hexameric assemblies formed from resorcin[4]arenes and pyrogallol[4]arenes. Studies were designed to provide further insights into the degree of assembly and stability of these self-assembled capsules at the micro- to nanomolar concentration ranges that are not accessible by NMR studies. The results of this investigation reveal factors that influence the self-assembly of these macrocycles into hexameric capsules. Pyrogallolarenes are very sensitive to the concentration of mixing, with an incre

Complexation of phenolic guests by endo- and exo-hydrogen-bonded receptors.

This article describes the complexation of phenol derivatives by hydrogen-bonded receptors. These phenol receptors are formed by self-assembly of calix[4]arene dimelamine or tetramelamine derivatives with 5,5-diethylbarbiturate (DEB) or cyanurate derivatives (CYA). The double rosette assemblies 3(3).(DEB)6/(CYA)6 have their phenol-binding functionalities (ureido groups) at the top and at the bottom of the double rosette (exo-receptors). The tetrarosette assemblies 4(3).(DEB)12/(CYA)12 form a cavity with binding sites between the two double rosettes for guest encapsulation (endo-receptors). An

Synergistic Iodination-Hydrogen Bonding Design Enables Thermostable and Ultrahigh Refractive Index Poly(dithioacetal)s.

High refractive index polymers (HRIPs) serve as cutting-edge materials for lightweight, miniaturized, and high-resolution optical devices, although balancing ultrahigh refractive index, transparency, and thermostability remains challenging. Here, poly(dithioacetal)s with aromatic main chains, heavy and polarizable iodine groups, and additionally incorporated hydroxy units exhibit a high glass transition temperature (Tg = 112 °C) and an ultrahigh refractive index (nD = 1.81), while maintaining visible-light transparency (%T ≥ 96 at 1 μm thickness). Density measurements confirmed that the synerg

Effect of ice recrystallization inhibition on hydrogen bonding interactions and membrane leakage of liposomes.

In this study, effects of ice recrystallization on membrane stability of liposomes were investigated using liposomes encapsulating a fluorescent dye. Membrane leakage was studied after freezing and storage at varying temperatures in solutions supplemented with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and combinations thereof. Leakage studies were corroborated with studies on ice crystal growth and hydrogen bonding interactions during holding at temperatures just below the ice melting temperature, i.e., at -10 °C. Cryomicroscopic observations confirmed that

High-Performance Anion Exchange Membranes with π-π Stacking and Hydrogen Bonding Bifunctional Units.

Strong intermolecular interactions facilitate the formation of efficient ion transport channels, which, in turn, significantly boost the performance of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Herein, 9-anthracene methanol with both π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding intermolecular forces is used as a bifunctional unit to synthesize high-performance AEMs through the Friedel-Crafts superacid catalytic reaction for the first time. The π-π stacking in the bifunctional units can induce hydrophilic pyridine cations to aggregate, and the hydrogen bonding can provide transport sites for OH- and water molecule

Facile Molecular-Level Refinements for Carbon Quantum Dots via Hydrogen-Bonding-Assisted Selective Isolation.

A novel method for synthesizing and refining high-purity carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using citric acid and diethylenetriamine as precursors is presented, achieved through molecular-level control by exploiting the differences in hydrogen-bonding strength. This process involves precipitation using melamine, extraction into ethanol, and encapsulation with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). The resulting APTES-encapsulated CQDs exhibited an enhanced color purity, higher photoluminescence quantum yield, and improved fluorescence stability over a broad pH range. Utilizing these well-defined high

Nickel-Catalyzed Enantioconvergent Allenylic Amination of Allenols Activated by Hydrogen-Bonding Interaction with Methanol.

The ubiquitous nature of amines in drug compounds, bioactive molecules and natural products has fueled intense interest in their synthesis. Herein, we introduce a nickel-catalyzed enantioconvergent allenylic amination of methanol-activated allenols. This protocol affords a diverse array of functionalized allenylic amines in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. The synthetic potential of this method is demonstrated by employing bioactive amines as nucleophiles and conducting gram-scale reactions. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations elucidate the role of

Diastereo- and Enantioselective Construction of Stereochemical Arrays Exploiting Non-Classical Hydrogen Bonding in Enolborates.

We report a copper-catalyzed reductive aldol addition to aldehydes and ketones, with pinacolborane as stoichiometric reductant, that results in the generation of stereodefined syn-aldol products. Cyclic, acyclic, fused and spirocyclic aldols bearing contiguous stereocenters are obtained with excellent yields and diastereoselectivities. Moreover, enantioselective reactions could be carried out with cycloalkenones to deliver aldols bearing three contiguous stereocenters and with up to 98 % ee. Computations reveal that the enolborate intermediate undergoes the syn-aldol reaction via a twist-boat

Catechin solubilization by spontaneous hydrogen bonding with poly(ethylene glycol) for dry eye therapeutics.

Catechin exhibits various pharmacological effects, yet its poor aqueous solubility limits its clinical use. Here, we investigate a facile catechin solubilization method via spontaneous hydrogen bonding between catechin and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The method is extremely simple in that mixing PEG with catechin followed by lyophilization completely converts insoluble catechin to soluble PEG/catechin nanoscale complexes. This solubilized catechin formulation is useful for preparing eyedrop medicine, and we demonstrate that the solubilized catechin exhibits therapeutic effect upon dry eye dis

Modeling the weak hydrogen bonding of pyrrole and dichloromethane through Raman and DFT study.

Raman spectra of neat pyrrole (C(4)H(5)N) and its binary mixtures with dichloromethane (CH(2)Cl(2), DCM) with varying mole fractions of C(4)H(5)N from 0.1 to 0.9 were recorded in order to monitor the influence of molecular interaction on spectral features of selected vibrational bands of pyrrole in the region 600-1600 cm(-1). Only 1369 cm(-1) vibrational band of pyrrole shows a significant change in its peak position in going from neat pyrrole to the complexes. The 1369 cm(-1) band shows (∼6 cm(-1)) blue shift upon dilution and the corresponding linewidth shows the maximum shift at C = 0.5 mol

Role of hydrogen bonding in the photophysical properties of isomeric tetrapyridylporphyrins in aprotic solvent.

Extensive photophysical properties of isomeric tetra-2-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(2)), tetra-3-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(3)), and tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(4)) have been studied in the presence of a series of phenols of increasing hydrogen bonding power in dichloromethane solution by employing UV/vis spectroscopy; steady-state, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy; and transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. The change of absorption spectra of all three porphyrins as a function of different phenol concentrations established the preference of hydrogen bonded complex formation to the per

1H, 13C NMR and DFT Study of Hydrogen Bonding in Imidazolium-based Ionic Liquids.

The ionic liquid 1-decyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide [C10mim][Br], the neat material, and also dissolved (~0.01 mole fraction) in various dielectric media (acetonitrile, benzene, chloroform, dichloromethane, methanol, 2-butanol and H2O) was studied using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The most important interaction in this compound is considered to be the Br-...H-C2+ hydrogen bond, which is formed between the anions and cations. The obtained results show that dielectric medium influence mostly the behavior of the Br-...H-C2+ bridge proton. The changes observed in 1H and 13C NMR spectra of [C10m

Structural effects on the ground and excited-state properties of photoswitchable hydrogen-bonding receptors.

The ground- and excited-state properties of a series of photochromic barbiturate receptors (N,N'-bis{6-[omega-(anthracen-9-yloxy)alkanoylamino]pyridin-2-yl}-5-t-butyl-isophthalamide, Tn), in which anthracene chromophores are tethered via (CH2)n (n = 1, 3-6) polymethylene linkers to the H-bond receptor moiety, are described. In these systems, the thermally reversible [4pi + 4pi] photodimerization of the anthracenes yields macrocyclic receptors (TnC) that possess significantly reduced affinity toward barbital as compared to their acyclic counterparts. The length of the tether not only determines

Cooperative Hydrogen-Bond-Donor Catalysis with Hydrogen Chloride Enables Highly Enantioselective Prins Cyclization Reactions.

Cooperative asymmetric catalysis with hydrogen chloride (HCl) and chiral dual-hydrogen-bond donors (HBDs) is applied successfully to highly enantioselective Prins cyclization reactions of a wide variety of simple alkenyl aldehydes. The optimal chiral catalysts were designed to withstand the strongly acidic reaction conditions and were found to induce rate accelerations of 2 orders of magnitude over reactions catalyzed by HCl alone. We propose that the combination of strong mineral acids and chiral hydrogen-bond-donor catalysts may represent a general strategy for inducing enantioselectivity in

Beyond the Geometric Mean: A Monopole-Based Combining Rule for Hydrogen-Bonding Cross-Interactions.

Intermolecular interactions govern the condensed-phase properties of substances as well as the thermodynamic behavior and phase equilibria of solutions. A central challenge in the molecular thermodynamics of mixing is the estimation of cross-interaction energies (εAB) between unlike molecules from the pure-substance properties via combining rules─a task complicated by the vast number of possible mixtures and the experimental difficulty of directly measuring cross-interaction energies. Classical Berthelot geometric-mean combining rules, originally derived for exchangeable van der Waals interact

Hydrogen Bonding as a Failure Mechanism for Release of Ibuprofen-Copovidone Amorphous Solid Dispersions.

Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) are often used to increase the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, there are substantial formulation challenges associated with optimizing their performance. The high polymer content needed to ensure rapid and extensive release creates a pill burden for patients, leading to lower compliance. To combat this problem, formulations with higher drug loading are desirable, but often have poor release. Previous research suggests that specific interactions between the drug and polymer can have a negative effect on ASD release, but the failure mech

Nucleophile-dependent mode-selective cyclization reactions initiated by hydrogen bonding-directed 1,6/1,4-addition.

Tandem cyclization initiated by hydrogen bonding-directed 1,6/1,4-addition of nucleophiles onto 1,3-diynyl ketones is described. The reaction with alcohols and thiols preferentially generates formal enyne ring-closing metathesis (RCM) products, whereas amines favor 5-exo-dig carbocyclization to generate indanone derivatives.

2D Biomimetic Membranes Constructed by Charge Assembly and Hydrogen Bonding for Precise Ion Separation.

Designing well-ordered, multifunctional layered membranes with high selectivity and long-term stability remains a significant challenge. Here, a simple strategy is introduced that utilizes charge repulsion between graphene oxide (GO) and engineered bacteria to induce liquid crystal formation, enabling their layer-by-layer self-assembly on a polyethersulfone membrane. The interlayer pressure flattens the bacteria, removing interlayer water and forming a densely packed structure. This compression decreases the spacing between functional groups, leading to a robust hydrogen bonding network and a
