Choral speech: the amelioration of stuttering via imitation and the mirror neuronal system.

'Choral' speech or speaking in unison is an undeniable phenomenon that immediately induces fluent and natural sounding speech in almost all people who stutter, regardless of linguistic content, situation or audience size. We propose that the choral speech effect is a form direct imitation, a primitive and innate human capacity that is possibly mediated at the neuronal level by 'mirror neurons'. Mirror systems link observations and actions are considered by many to be a neuronal substrate for gestural language acquisition, as well as forming the basis for many learned behaviors, thus possibly p

Automated Analysis of Smiling Mimicry Across the Psychosis-Risk Continuum.

AIM: Early identification and support for individuals with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are essential for timely intervention and improved outcomes. Emotional mimicry, which refers to the automatic imitation of another person's emotional expression, such as a smile, is a fundamental social process that supports smooth interpersonal interaction and is known to be impaired in schizophrenia. However, its role across the broader psychosis-risk continuum remains unclear. This study examined smiling mimicry (the emotional mimicry of smiling) in individuals with PLEs and explored its relationshi

Neurophysiological mechanisms underlying action observation treatment for upper limb stroke rehabilitation: A mini-review.

Action Observation Treatment (AOT) has been demonstrated to promote motor recovery in stroke survivors. This approach consists in the observation of goal-directed actions, followed by their imitation. AOT exploits the functional properties of the Mirror Neuron System (MNS), which activates motor representations during the observation of others' actions, thereby triggering a process known as "motor resonance". This mechanism enhances corticospinal excitability, supporting neural plasticity. During AOT, the MNS becomes finely tuned, promoting neuroplastic changes crucial for motor recovery. Howe

René Girard and the Mimetic Nature of Eating Disorders.

French historian and literary critic René Girard (1923-2015), most widely known for the concepts of mimetic desire and scapegoating, also engaged in the discussion of the surge of eating disorders in his 1996 essay Eating Disorders and Mimetic Desire. This article explores Girard's ideas on the mimetic nature and origin of eating disorders from a clinical psychiatric perspective and contextualizes them within the field of eating disorders research as well as in relation to broader psychological, sociological and anthropological models of social comparison and non-consumption. Three main themes

Retrieval by a patient with apraxia of sensorimotor information from visually presented objects.

Motor representations are reported to be implicitly evoked when one observes manipulatable objects (action potentiation). The relationship was examined between action potentiation and pantomime deficit in apraxia. Participants responded to line drawings of manipulatable objects with either the left or right hand, according to the color of the stimulus. In normal participants (N= 10, four women, six men, M age = 28.5 yr., SD = 5.6), responses were faster when the orientation of the stimulus was compatible with the response-hand grasp. However, the apraxic patient did not exhibit this compatibil

Imitation or exploration? Young infants' matching of adults' oral gestures.

The claim that very young infants can imitate rests largely on reports that infants match adult displays of mouth opening (MO) and tongue protrusion (TP). Recent reviews suggest that only tongue protruding is reliably matched by young infants. This study tests the proposal that infants' "imitation" of tongue protruding reflects a coincidental match between a sight that infants find interesting and a behavior by which infants express interest. In Study 1, 4-week-old infants who looked longer at a nonsocial light display also produced TPs at higher rates than infants showing less interest. In St

Transdiagnostic investigation into the relationship between mirror neuron system activity, echo-phenomena, and theory of mind in major psychoses.

The association between social cognition and putative mirror neuron system (MNS)-activity in major psychoses might be contingent upon frontal dysregulation. We used a transdiagnostic ecological approach to enrich a specific behavioral phenotype (echophenomena or hyper-imitative states) across clinical diagnoses (mania and schizophrenia) to compare behavioral and physiological markers of social cognition and frontal disinhibition. We examined 114 participants with schizophrenia (N = 53) and mania (N = 61) for the presence and severity of echo-phenomena (echopraxia, incidental, and induced echol

The predictive chameleon: evidence for anticipated social action.

Extensive research has demonstrated that movement observation leads to an activation of a corresponding motor representation in the observer. Recent theoretical accounts have put forward the idea that such motor simulation serves an anticipatory function. In line with this assumption, the results from 2 experiments indicate that merely observing an event in someone else (e.g., nose wrinkling) triggers the anticipated action in the observer (e.g., nose scratching). Moreover, extending recent findings on ideomotor action, our second experiment suggests that this anticipated action effect is base

Task-relevance dependent gradients in medial prefrontal and temporoparietal cortices suggest solutions to paradoxes concerning self/other control.

Contrary to the prevailing view, Nicolle and colleagues (2012) recently demonstrated that dorsal and ventral regions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and temporoparietal cortex (TPC) do not distinguish between action values relating to the self and to another individual; rather, these regions differentiate whether an action is currently relevant or irrelevant to the task at hand. This finding suggests solutions to paradoxes in social cognition. The first paradox concerns self/other control: With some experimental tasks TPC activity is associated with the promotion of self over other repr

Imitation of hierarchical structure versus component details of complex actions by 3- and 5-year-olds.

We investigated developmental changes in the level of information children incorporate into their imitation when a model executes complex, hierarchically organized actions. A total of 57 3-year-olds and 60 5-year-olds participated, watching video demonstrations of an "artificial fruit" box being opened through a complex series of nine different steps. Half of each sample observed the same nine steps performed through either of two different, hierarchically organized procedures, whereas half witnessed differing component action details. Children were found to imitate at both levels but were mor

The role of stimulability in the assessment and treatment of Spanish-speaking children.

Stimulability has been used successfully in planning treatment of phonological disorders in English-speaking children. The effectiveness of stimulability on the treatment of phonological disorders in speakers of languages other than English has not been investigated. Specifically, its role in treatment planning of phonological disorders in Spanish-speaking children has yet to be explored. The purpose of this article is to discuss the role of stimulability in the assessment and treatment of phonological disorders in Spanish-speaking children. Further, a case study applying these principles to a

Imitation and action in autism: a critical review.

This article considers the evidence for an imitative deficit in autism and for the possible role of deficiencies in the representation of actions. An argument is developed for the claim that the imitation problem is diagnostic of a basic information-processing rather than a social dysfunction. Reviews are offered of the empirical literature on gestural imitation in autism (and other developmental disorders) and the more anecdotal evidence for problems in the domain of action development in autism. An account that may help to integrate these areas is suggested, as are directions for future rese

Multiple approaches to the reduction of dental fear.

Participant modeling, symbolic modeling, and graduated exposure were compared with each other and with two control treatments for effectiveness in reducing fear of dentistry in 33 adults who had avoided dental treatment for from 1 to 10 yr. Assessment of in-chair psychological responsiveness and overt behavior showed no significant pre-post change for any group although all of them reported significant reduction in state anxiety and expected pain. During the 24 months following treatment, from 50 to 87.5% of the subjects were able to return to regular dental care with the highest "return" rate

The study was performed on a contagious behavior model based on drinking, behavior in rats. In the presence of familiar drink-motivated conspecific showing drinking behavior (rat-demonstrator), drink-unmotivated rat-viewer begins to demonstrate behavioral signs ofdrinking motivation that is the signs of behavioral contagion. In this paper; the changes in the ethogram of rats-viewers with behavioral contagion were studied by analyzing atransition probabilities matrix. Those animals showed a decrease in the frequency of aggression and defensive behavior patterns simultaneously with an increase i

Why is joint attention a pivotal skill in autism?

Joint attention abilities play a crucial role in the development of autism. Impairments in joint attention are among the earliest signs of the disorder and joint attention skills relate to outcome, both in the 'natural course' of autism and through being targeted in early intervention programmes. In the current study, concurrent and longitudinal associations between joint attention and other social communication abilities measured in a sample of infants with autism and related pervasive developmental disorders at age 20 months, and language and symptom severity at age 42 months, were examined.

Brain repair after stroke--a novel neurological model.

Following stroke, patients are commonly left with debilitating motor and speech impairments. This article reviews the state of the art in neurological repair for stroke and proposes a new model for the future. We suggest that stroke treatment--from the time of the ictus itself to living with the consequences--must be fundamentally neurological, from limiting the extent of injury at the outset, to repairing the consequent damage. Our model links brain and behaviour by targeting brain circuits, and we illustrate the model though action observation treatment, which aims to enhance brain network c

Response facilitation in the four great apes: is there a role for empathy?

Contagious yawning is a form of response facilitation found in humans and other primates in which observing a model yawning enhances the chance that the observer will also yawn. Because contagious yawning seems to be more easily triggered when models are conspecifics or have a strong social bond with the observer, it has been proposed that contagious yawning is linked to empathy. A possible way to test this hypothesis is to analyze whether individuals' responses differ when they observe models yawning or performing different involuntary (i.e., nose wiping, scratching) and voluntary (i.e., hand

Aplasics born without hands mirror the goal of hand actions with their feet.

The premotor and parietal mirror neuron system (MNS) is thought to contribute to the understanding of observed actions by mapping them onto "corresponding" motor programs of the observer [1-24], but how would the MNS respond to the observation of hand actions if the observer never had hands? Would it not show changes of blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal, because the observer lacks motor programs that can resonate [12, 25, 26], or would it show significant changes because the observer has motor programs for the foot or mouth with corresponding goals [15, 17, 19, 27, 28]?
