Searching the Internet for Infertility Information: A Survey of Patient Needs and Preferences.

BACKGROUND: Given the complexity of infertility diagnoses and treatments and the convenience of the internet for finding health-related information, people undergoing infertility treatments often use Web-based resources to obtain infertility information and support. However, little is known about the types of information and support resources infertility patients search for on the internet and whether these resources meet their needs. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (1) examine what individual factors, namely, demographic characteristics and distress, are associated with searching t

Fibromyalgia: can online cognitive behavioral therapy help?

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven useful in treating fibromyalgia, depression, and anxiety. Computerized delivery of CBT allows increased access to such therapy. This study assessed the effect of internet-based CBT on Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) composite scores and tender point assessments. METHODS: This 12-week randomized controlled trial included patients ≥18 years of age with 1990 American College of Rheumatology criteria for fibromyalgia and mild to moderate depression and anxiety. A total of 56 subjects were randomized into either a 6-week internet-ba

Prevalence of Internet-based addictive behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, many countries have imposed lockdowns which have caused an increase in Internet use. The goals of this review are to find whether Internet-based addictive behaviors have increased during the pandemic and to define the main reasons for this increase. The systematic search was conducted in Google Scholar, Science Direct, PsycINFO, and PubMed in October of 2020, to determine the current evidence and observations concerning

Development and evaluation of iManage: A self-management app co-designed by adolescents with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sickle cell disease (SCD) are a vulnerable population with high risk of morbidity that could be decreased with effective self-management. Previous research suggests that mobile applications (apps) may facilitate AYA engagement in health-promoting behaviors. The objectives of this study were: (i) describe Internet access and use in AYA with SCD; (ii) identify barriers for self-management in this population; (iii) collaborate with AYA to co-design a mobile app that would minimize barriers; and (iv) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of

A Qualitative Study of the Lived Experiences and Needs of Parent Caregivers of People With Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1500 children in Canada are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). A childhood CF diagnosis has substantial implications for the mental health of parent caregivers (referred to as parents herein), who report elevated levels of emotional distress, stress, depression, and anxiety. Tailored psychosocial resources for this population are scarce and barriers exist to accessing community mental health services. Internet-delivered programs present a promising mode of mental health resource delivery for this specialized population, but none are available in Canada. To inform th

Telemedicine Technology: a Review of Services, Equipment, and Other Aspects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Telemedicine uses technology to connect patients with providers at a distance. While the clinical aspects of this have been reviewed extensively, the technical aspects are not as well understood by allergists when they consider adding telemedicine to their practice. This review focuses on the technical aspects of setting up a telemedicine program. RECENT FINDINGS: With the advent of new technologies including high-speed Internet, video conferencing solutions, and digital examination equipment, facilitated virtual visits as replacements for in-person visits are now possible.

Prevalence of Internet Addiction and Its Associated Factors Among Undergraduate Students at the University of Botswana: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Internet Addiction (IA) is an emerging public health concern, especially among young adults. It has been associated with various psychiatric conditions, including depression and anxiety. Despite increasing internet access in Botswana, local data on IA and its psychological correlates remain limited. This study investigates the prevalence and patterns of internet addiction and its association with depression and anxiety among undergraduate students at the University of Botswana. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 undergraduate students from 5 randomly selected faculties. Participan

Accessing Patient Portals: Some Patients Want a Helping Hand.

BACKGROUND: Patient portals provide patients with access to their health information, including medical history and conditions, lab results, and upcoming appointments and ability to message their care team. However, not all patients have access to their portal. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 233 adult family medicine patients from 4 community health clinics and a local community organization was conducted. The survey assessed patient demographics, internet usage, device ownership, and engagement with patient portals. KEY RESULTS: Nearly half (47%) of patients had never accessed any por

Development of a GIS-based, real-time Internet mapping tool for rabies surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Oral rabies vaccination programs have been implemented to control the spread of wildlife rabies in the United States. However, current surveillance systems are inadequate for the efficient management and evaluation of these large scale vaccine baiting programs. With this in mind, a GIS-based rabies surveillance database and Internet mapping application was created. This surveillance system, RabID, provides a new resource for the rapid mapping and dissemination of data on animal rabies cases in relation to unaffected, enzootic, and baited areas where current interventions are underw

Protocol for the Optimune trial: a randomized controlled trial evaluating a novel Internet intervention for breast cancer survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Depression and fatigue are common in breast cancer survivors, and their presence is associated with personal suffering and worse prognosis. While many women receive short-term psychological support in the acute treatment phase, this is rarely available in subsequent phases. Internet interventions for breast cancer survivors could provide additional psychological support, as they are easily accessible and may be effective. However, no trial has yet examined the effectiveness of an Internet intervention that provides cognitive behavioural therapy techniques plus lifestyle advice fo

Online Sexual Solicitation of Children and Adolescents.

Technological advances have exploded in the new millennium. The Internet provides many opportunities to enrich the lives of youth by providing greater access to learning opportunities, valuable resources, and positive social interactions with peers. However, the Internet is a relatively new and unregulated entity that can also place children and adolescents at risk for a variety of negative and potentially dangerous exposures. One such risk is online sexual solicitations and interactions with older adolescents, peers, and adults. This continuing education article will explore online sexual sol
