Graded compression sonography of the colon in the diagnosis of polyps in pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: We report seven cases of juvenile polyps detected by graded compression gray-scale and color Doppler sonography in five children with nonspecific symptoms. CONCLUSION: Intestinal polyps can be detected by graded compression gray-scale and color Doppler sonography without colonic preparation. On gray-scale sonography, polyps appeared as spherical or ovoid hypoechoic nodules in the colon lumen. Small cysts were identified inside the nodules. Four polyps had fewer and smaller cysts, whereas three others contained many cysts. A hyperechoic layer surrounding the polyp corresponded to th

Endoscopic therapy of small-bowel polyps by double-balloon enteroscopy in patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a hereditary disorder characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentations and hamartomatous polyps mainly in the small bowel. These polyps may cause complications such as intussusception. OBJECTIVE: To assess therapeutic efficacy and safety of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) for detection and treatment of small-bowel polyps in patients with PJS. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary-care referral center. PATIENTS: This study involved 13 patients with PJS, defined as a proven STK11 gene mutation or according to international diagnostic cri

[Small bowel intussusception and Vanek's tumor in an elderly woman].

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are non-frequent benign lesions, described by Vanek in 1949, originated in the sub mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. They have an uncertain origin and they are formed of fibroblastic and mesenchymal proliferations with an important eosinophilic proportion. Depending on where are they localized, could present different type of symptoms. The inflammatory fibroid polyps are one of the rare benign conditions causing intestinal intussusception in adults. We present the case of a 82 years old woman, who presented an intestinal intussusception due to an inflammatory fi

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the jejunum causing intussusception.

A case of inflammatory fibroid polyp of the jejunum is presented. This is the seventh case of this type of polyp in the jejunum and, to the best of our knowledge, the first one producing jejunojejunal intussusception. Symptoms of the inflammatory fibroid polyp in this part of the intestine are usually those of intermittent obstruction or intussusception, as in our patient. The treatment is surgical excision of the polyp.

A rare case of bowel intussusception due to adenocarcinomatous polyp in a 14 year-old child: case report.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is a form of intestinal obstruction in which a segment of the bowel prolapses into a more distal segment. It is an uncommon condition in children older than 2 years and causes intestinal obstruction. On the contrary of adult intussusception, childhood intussusception does not usually happen on a lead point of a malignant organic lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old male presented with complaints of heavy, bilious emesis and periumbilical colicky pain. Ultrasonography showed a dilated intestinal loop with absent bowel movement. CT scan revealed two masses in the

[Ileal inflammatory fibroid polyp: case report].

The inflammatory fibroid polyp is a rare, polypoid lesion in the gastrointestinal tract. It occurs in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine in descending order of frequency. This case report shows an ileal inflammatory fibroid polyp that causes ileoileal intussusception. So far, the histogenesis and pathogenesis of these kinds of polyps are still uncertain. Under the microscopic examination, the lesion appears to be made up of spindle-shaped or stellate cells that are morphologically identical to proliferating fibroblasts. Immunostaining results are strongly positive for vimentin a

Laparoscopic management of small bowel intussusception in a 16-year-old with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Peutz-Jeghers is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyps and discoloration of mucosal membranes. The polyps can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract and can grow large enough to cause bowel obstructions. CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male presented to the emergency department with signs and symptoms of an acute bowel obstruction. He had 2 days of abdominal pain, obstipation, and vomiting. He had a previous history of a colonoscopy with polypectomy at age 4, and hyperpigmentation of his mucous membranes. RESULTS: Computed tomographic (CT) sc

Adenomatous transformation in a giant solitary Peutz-Jeghers-type hamartomatous polyp.

Solitary Peutz-Jeghers-type polyp is a rare hamartomatous polyp without associated mucocutaneous pigmentation or a family history of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome. It is usually encountered in the small intestine, but rarely involves the rectum. A 27-year-old previously healthy female patient presented with a two-month history of rectal bleeding. The patient had neither mucocutaneous pigmentation nor a family history of gastro-intestinal polyposis. Endoscopic examination revealed a solitary lobular polypoid lesion in the lower rectum. The polyp was sessile and measured 15 cm in diameter. As histologi

Intestinal ganglioneuromatosis: unusual presentation of Cowden syndrome resulting in delayed diagnosis.

We report on a 25-year-old woman who presented as a teenager with macrocephaly and multiple gastrointestinal lesions including ganglioneuromas, hamartomas, lipomas, juvenile, and hyperplastic polyps in association with extra-intestinal tumors including a retroperitoneal lipoma, storiform collagenoma, and a fibrolipomatous hamartoma. PTEN mutation analysis identified a deletion in exon 2, confirming the diagnosis of Cowden syndrome. While intestinal polyps are common among Cowden patients who undergo endoscopy, and intestinal ganglioneuromas are occasionally reported, they are not usual present

Gardner's Syndrome.

Gardner's syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease and is a subtype of familial adenomatous polyposis. It is characterized by adenomatous intestinal polyps, multiple osteomas in the skull, maxillae, mandible, and multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous masses (epidermoids and desmoid). Intestinal polyps, if not treated, have 100% chance of becoming malignant. We report a case of a 25-year-old female patient with Gardner's syndrome, with clinical manifestations including impacted supernumerary teeth, odontomes, sebaceous cyst on the scalp, and osteomas. It is important for the general dental pract

Triple Intussusception in an Adult-A Rare Presentation of Adenocarcinoma Ileum.

Intestinal intussusception is uncommon in adults. It occurs more often in the small intestine than in the colon. In adults, when small bowel intussusception occurs, it can be due to a malignant lead point. Malignant etiology is most frequently due to diffuse metastatic disease. We present a rare case of an 18-year-old woman who was diagnosed with jejunojejunal, jejunoileal, and colocolic intussusceptions. She presented with vomiting, abdominal pain, and passage of semisolid stools for 5 days. During emergency exploratory laparotomy, multiple polyps were found in the jejunum, ileum, and sigmoid

Inflammatory Fibroid Polyp in a 48-Year-Old Male: A Rare Cause of Intussusception.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp is a neoplastic condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract and particularly the gastric antrum. It is virtually a benign submucosal mass comprising mesenchymal cells and numerous small blood vessels with inflammatory cells and commonly eosinophils. Patients with inflammatory fibroid polyps usually present clinically with mechanical intestinal obstruction with or without intussusception. Herein, we present a case of a 48-year-old male with a known history of schizophrenia who presented with mechanical intestinal obstruction following intussusception due to inflamm

Inflammatory myoglandular polyp as a cause of recurrent abdominal pain in a patient with quiescent Crohn's disease.

Chronic inflammation of the intestinal mucosa has been associated with the appearance of inflammatory polyps or pseudopolyps. Among the distinct categories of inflammatory polyps are inflammatory myoglandular polyps (IMGP) usually found in the colorectum. Only one case of IMGP in the terminal ileus has been described since their first description. We report the first case of an inflammatory polyp with both hyperplastic and myoglandular histological characteristics, in the terminal ileum of a patient with quiescent Crohn's disease, causing recurrent intussusception.

A 'giant' intraluminal lipoma presenting with intussusception in an adult: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intussusception is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. It usually presents with typical features of intestinal obstruction, and is associated with the presence of a 'lead point' for the invaginated portion. This 'lead point' is rarely an intraluminal, submucosal lipoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 64-year-old African-Ugandan woman of Bantu ethnicity who presented with features of intestinal obstruction secondary to intussusception. She was treated operatively. A left colocolonic invagination was found with the interssusceptum having a giant po

Intestinal intussusception in a child with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: case report.

UNLABELLED: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), an uncommon inherited autosomal dominant disorder, is distinguished by mucocutaneous pigmentations, many gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, and a higher incidence of gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary, and extracolonic malignancies. Recurrent acute intestinal obstruction, in particular intussusception in the young, is a serious sequalae of PJS. CASE PRESENTATION: A clinical observation of a 5-year-old patient with a complicated course of PJS is presented. Emphasis on recurring episodes of acute abdomen, clinical diagnosis including polyp histop

Neonatal ileoileocolic intussusception associated with ileal polyp: report of one case.

Neonatal intussusception is an uncommon disease. We report a case of neonatal ileoileocolic intussusception led by an ileal polyp in a female neonate. The patient presented with irritable crying, bilious vomiting and frank bloody stool on the 26th day of life. On physical examination, a mobile abdominal mass was palpated. Abdominal sonography demonstrated a long segment intussusception; associated with a low echogenic mass. At laparotomy, ileoileocolic intussusception led by an ileal polyp was found. Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of polyp. Because intestinal obstruction is the primary mani

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the caecum in a patient with neurofibromatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the large intestine is uncommon. To our knowledge, this condition has not been reported in a patient with neurofibromatosis. CLINICAL PICTURE: In this report, a 66-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis was found to have a large polyp in the caecum. TREATMENT: Right hemicolectomy was performed because of the size of the polyp. OUTCOME: Pathological examination showed that the polyp was an inflammatory fibroid polyp. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware that inflammatory fibroid polyps could be one of the many manifestations of neurofibromatosis

[One case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, in which the course from onset to spontaneous curing could be followed].

The case is a 62 years old male. No polyposis was found by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or barium enema examination performed at the time of cholecystectomy in March 1994. Symptoms such as dysgeusia, diarrhea, loss of hair and atrophy of nails began to appear from May. Examination of the digestive tract performed in October revealed clustered polyposis in the stomach, duodenum, small intestine and large intestine. Pathologically, all the polyps were found to be of the juvenile type, so a diagnosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) was made. Histologic patterns of rectal polyp after polype

De Novo Development of Distal Jejunal and Duodenal Adenomas After 41 Months of Teduglutide Treatment in a Patient With Short-Bowel Syndrome: A Case Report.

The glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analogue teduglutide is a medical treatment option for patients with short-bowel syndrome-associated chronic intestinal failure. Because studies in mice have shown that GLP-2 analogues may promote the growth of colonic neoplasms, surveillance colonoscopies before and during teduglutide therapy were recommended. The occurrence of small-intestinal neoplasms has not been reported so far, except for a recent report about de novo development of hamartomatous duodenal polyps. We report a case of de novo development of small-intestinal premalignant adenomatous poly
