PURPOSE: This prospective observational study aims to assess the MA brace effectiveness in hyperkyphosis correction, focusing also on patients' compliance of bracing and its psychological impact.
METHODS: Patients referring to our spine outpatient department with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) from January 2011 to January 2017 were prospectively recruited. Patients were divided into two groups, according to their global thoracic kyphosis (TK): Group-A TKT0 < 60°, Group-B TKT0 ≥ 60°. The MA brace was prescribed according to SRS criteria. Full spine X-rays were analyzed at conventional times: at t

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK) is common in infants with achondroplasia. Our goals were to examine the natural history of TLK and identify factors associated with persistent TLK.
METHODS: We reviewed records of patients with achondroplasia seen by a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at a tertiary care medical center between 1997 and 2013. Inclusion criteria were minimum 2-year follow-up and radiographs taken at time of presentation, within 6 months of walking age, and within 6 months of the first anniversary of walking age. We defined TLK as kyphosis of ≥20 degrees centered at T12

To measure the cross-sectional area (CSA) of para-spinal muscles in Scheuermann's kyphosis patients. Preoperative MRI images of 16 Scheuermann's kyphosis patients were analysed and compared to 16 patients with normal MRI images (control group). The CSAs were measured at L3-4 and L4-5. Both groups showed similar demographics and patient characteristics. The multifidus muscles CSA were found to be significantly smaller at L3/4 level in Scheuermann's kyphosis patients (p = 0.022 on the left and p = 0.016 on the right side compared to control group). There was no significant change in multifidus C

INTRODUCTION: Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) of the cervicothoracic spine is a deformity that can affect patients who have undergone long thoracolumbar instrumented fusion. Preoperative hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine and changes of more than 30° in lumbar lordosis are independent risk factors for the onset of PJK.
METHODS: When PJK occurs in the cervicothoracic spine, extension of the fusion with eventual application of osteotomy techniques is frequently necessary to treat symptomatic patients or in case a neurological deficit occurs. Ponte osteotomy and pedicle subtraction osteotomy

STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the interrater and intrarater reliability and validity of tools for measuring thoracic kyphosis, namely the digital inclinometer and the flexicurve.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Various methods are used to measure kyphosis, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Radiography is common, highly reliable, and valid but unsuitable for regular use because of radiation exposure and cost. Other clinical methods allow safe and rapid assessment of spinal curvature. The validity and reliability of some nclinometers have bee

STUDY DESIGN: Three experiments to validate the use of the flexible electrogoniometer (FEG) as a tool to measure thoracic kyphosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the accuracy, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity of the FEG as applied to the thoracic spine.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Thoracic kyphosis is commonly measured by the Cobb angle from lateral radiograph. Other less-invasive tools have been developed, but all yield only static measurements or are restricted to the laboratory. The FEG, which can record joint angles over time outside the laboratory, has been used to measure o

Nowadays, lumbar spondylosis is one of the most frequent causes of lower back pain. In order to improve our understanding of the lumbar spine anatomy and functionality over time, we compared the lumbar vertebrae of Neanderthals with those of anatomically modern humans. The fossil record reports on only two Neanderthal skeletons (i.e., Kebara 2 and Shanidar 3, both predating the appearance of modern humans) with full preservation of the entire lumbar spine. Examination of these early hominids showed that they display natural lumbar kyphosis, with only mild degenerative changes of the lumbar spi

Kyphosis in myelomeningocele is characterized by a complex pattern of problems during development and therapy. On the one hand, decompensation of upright posture leads to loss of sitting ability and social integration; on the other hand, accompanying malformations and trophic alterations threaten the physical integrity and performance. Neurologic function, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation, skeletal deformity and the urinary transport system need to be kept in mind and need to be treated with cooperation between the different specialties. Especially during serious surgical interventions su

Scheuermann's thoracic kyphosis is a structural deformity classically characterized by anterior wedging of 5 degrees or more of three adjacent thoracic vertebral bodies. Secondary radiographic findings of Schmorl's nodes, endplate narrowing, and irregular endplates confirm the diagnosis. The etiology remains unclear. Adolescents typically present to medical attention because of cosmetic deformity; adults more commonly present because of increased pain. The indications for treatment are similar to those for other spinal deformities, namely, progression of the deformity, pain, neurologic comprom

Between 1987 and 1991, 20 patients with symptomatic postlaminectomy kyphosis were treated with anterior decompression, bone graft, and anterior cervical plate. The patients were predominantly male (14:6) with a mean age of 58 years. The initial laminectomy was performed for either spondylosis (80%) or spinal tumor (20%). All patients had anterior compressive pathology, which was associated with instability (45%), neck pain (75%), myeloradiculopathy (90%), or severe neck deformity (30%). The mean degree of kyphosis was 38 degrees. Treatment consisted of a trial of cervical traction (75%), anter
