Neuronal nitric oxide synthase activity mediates Lycium barbarum polysaccharides-enhanced sexual performance without stimulating noncontact erection in rats.

RATIONALE: Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is known to promote reproductive functions. However, its role in noncontact erection (NCE) of penis initiated by brain regions including medial preoptic area (MPOA) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regions responsible for sexual behavior has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: Therefore, this study initially investigated the effects of LBP on male sexual function, and subsequently, the mechanistic insight was investigated through assessing the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the MPOA and PVN. METHODS: The adult male rats

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides and melatonin alleviate cadmium-induced hepatic metabolic injury associated with alterations in PI3K/AKT signaling.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), bioactive macromolecules derived from Lycium barbarum, exhibit metabolic regulatory and hepatoprotective activities. Cadmium (Cd) exposure is a major environmental concern associated with hepatic metabolic dysfunction and liver injury; however, the potential protective role of LBP against Cd-induced hepatic dysfunction and the effects of its combined administration with melatonin (MT) remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of LBP, alone or in combination with MT, in a mouse model of chronic Cd exposure. Cd ex

Optimized green extraction of flavonoids from Lycium barbarum leaves using betaine-ethylene glycol NADES: Mechanisms, identification, and bioactivity.

The study employed a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) to extract flavonoids from Lycium barbarum leaves (LBL) in order to overcome the limitations of conventional solvents. Betaine-ethylene glycol (NADES-11) was identified as the optimal solvent and following process optimisation, the TFC reached 123.94 ± 1.04 mg RE/g (1.92-fold higher than 70% ethanol). FT-IR, SEM and intermolecular interaction calculations revealed that the stable hydrogen-bond network within NADES-11 confers it with high extraction efficiency. The purified extract (PLLF) was identified as containing 21 flavonoid and ph

Nano-iron modulates salt stress responses in Lycium barbarum via enhanced nutrient uptake, antioxidant defense, and phenolic metabolism.

While goji berry (Lycium barbarum) exhibits moderate to high salt tolerance, prolonged or high salinity can still impair its growth, water relations, and metabolism, especially in arid and saline regions. Despite its agronomic and pharmaceutical value, the combined effects of salinity and foliar-applied nano-iron remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the interactive impacts of salinity (0, 150, and 300 mM NaCl) and foliar nano-iron (0, 15, and 30 µM Fe-NPs) on physiological performance, nutrient dynamics, antioxidant responses, and secondary metabolite accumulation in hydroponical

A Structurally Characterized Lycium barbarum Polysaccharide Protects Against Retinal Degeneration Through Nrf2 Activation and NF-κB/NLRP3 Suppression.

Retinal degeneration is characterized by progressive photoreceptor loss driven by oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, yet effective mutation-independent therapeutic strategies remain limited. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, the structural features responsible for their retinal protective effects remain poorly defined. In this study, crude LBP was fractionated by DEAE-cellulose ion-exchange chromatography, and the most bioactive fraction, LBPF2, was identified using H2O2-injured 661W cone photoreceptor-like cells.
