PURPOSE: The pectoral nerves (PECS) I block, first described in 2011 for surgery involving the pectoralis muscle, has principally been used for breast cancer surgery. No formal evaluation of its differential motor- and sensory-blocking abilities has been reported. We hypothesize that the PECS I block will produce a motor block of the pectoralis muscles with diminished upper limb adduction strength as measured with a handheld dynamometer.
METHODS: We conducted a PECS I block in a randomized placebo-controlled trial in six healthy subjects who received 0.4 mL·kg-1 of 0.9% saline (placebo) on on

BACKGROUND: Stronger toe flexor muscles improve performance outcomes in children, including balance, sprinting, jumping and side stepping. Toe flexor strength (TFS) is recommended as part of the clinical assessment of foot function in children. Fixed dynamometry, rather than handheld, is the gold standard of measurement; however, it can be prohibitively costly. No fixed dynamometer reliability studies on toe flexion have been conducted in children to date.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Does the novel fixed hand-held dynamometer (HHD) protocol provide reliable intra-rater and test-retest measurements of

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the reliability and validity of measurements of cervical retraction strength obtained with a hand held dynamometer (HHD) from healthy adults. Background: Impaired neck muscle strength is related to neck pain, abnormal posture, and various cervical pathologies. While sophisticated devices to objectively measure neck strength exist, many are not practicable in typical orthopedic practices or have questionable validity and reliability. Methods: Forty participants were included in the analysis of neck strength using isometric testing with an HH

Throwing events such as discus, shot put, and javelin involve repetitive and explosive overhead activities in a short period, which increases the risk of upper extremity injuries. Furthermore, the available data on seated throwers are inadequately documented. Thus, this study aims to (1) describe the muscle strength profiles of shoulder external and internal rotators and the elbow flexors and extensors in seated throwers, and (2) identify the differences in muscle strength between seated throwers competing at international levels and those at national levels. Twenty-one seated throwers partici

Manual muscle testing (MMT) and hand-held dynamometry (HHD) are commonly used in people with inflammatory myopathy (IM), but their clinimetric properties have not yet been sufficiently studied. To evaluate the reliability and validity of MMT and HHD, maximum isometric strength was measured in eight muscle groups across three measurement events. To evaluate reliability of HHD, intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), the standard error of measurements (SEM) and smallest detectable changes (SDC) were calculated. To measure reliability of MMT linear Cohen`s Kappa was computed for single muscle

Background Stroke represents the largest cause of chronic disability resulting in muscle weakness and instability in the trunk muscles. Despite the reliable measures from isokinetic devices for upper/lower limb muscles, there is a lack of measures for trunk muscles in post-stroke hemiparesis. Objectives To investigate the reliability of the strength and endurance measures from an isokinetic dynamometer for able-bodied and post-stroke hemiparesis people. Methods The measures were taken from both groups (control/hemiparesis) performing antagonistic movements (flexion/extension) during different

A bout of eccentric exercise (ECC) has the protective effect of reducing muscle damage during a subsequent bout of ECC known as the "repeated bout effect" (RBE). The purpose of this study was to determine if the RBE is greater when both bouts of ECC are performed using the same vs. different velocity of contraction. Thirty-one right-handed participants were randomly assigned to perform an initial bout of either fast (3.14 rad·s [180°·s]) or slow (0.52 rad·s [30°·s]) maximal isokinetic ECCs of the elbow flexors. Three weeks later, the participants completed another bout of ECC at the same veloc

BACKGROUND: Arm injuries in baseball continue to rise. Previous studies have confirmed relationships between shoulder strength, injury risk, and performance in baseball athletes. Shoulder strength measures vary considerably within and among baseball players and are influenced heavily by anthropometric measures. Presently, the normalization of shoulder strength measures has not been tested adequately to meet necessary statistical assumptions.
HYPOTHESIS: At least 1 shoulder strength normalization method would meet 2 statistical assumptions: the intercept assumption and correlation assumption.

INTRODUCTION: Chondromalacia patella (CMP) is characterizsed by cartilage degeneration, affects young adults, more women (2:1) and is responsible for 75% of knee pain complaints in the active population. The etiology is multifactorial and may be related to extrinsic factors (trauma and burden) and intrinsic factors (patellar malalignment and quadriceps weakness). Isokinetic dynamometry (ID) can aid in the detection of the causal factors of knee pain related to CMP.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the parameters of the ID of individuals with and without CMP and correlate them with the clin

INTRODUCTION: In the assessment of hand and upper limb function, grip strength is of major importance. Use of the JAMAR dynamometer has been an accepted test of grip strength and routinely part of the physical examination.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to determine by means of a median nerve block simulating a patient group if the measurement of different types of grip force can improve the quantification of impairment of the hand beyond the sole power grip measurements.
METHODS: In 29 healthy volunteers, grip force measurement was done by the JAMAR dynamometer for power gr

BACKGROUND: To improve the goal-directedness of strength exercises for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), physical rehabilitation specialists need to know which muscle-groups are most substantially weakened across the kinetic chain of both lower extremities. The purpose was to improve the knowledge base for strength exercise therapy. The objective was to explore the relative differences in muscle strength in the main directions bilaterally across the hip, knee, and ankle joints between patients with light-to-moderate symptomatic and radiographic KOA and people without knee complaints.

1. To evaluate interventions aiming to increase muscle strength in older men, it is necessary to use an objective and reproducible method to measure strength. The most reliable method to evaluate muscle strength is isokinetic peak torque (PT) measured by a dynamometer; however, raw PT varies with differences in body size and an optimal scaling for body physique to control confounding effects of body size is necessary to make the most valid comparisons. 2. The present study was designed to estimate the effects of age (part A) and androgen administration (part B) on muscle strength and to estima
