Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm metastatic to the ovary: A case report and intraoperative assessment guide.

INTRODUCTION: Incidence of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is increasing. Preoperatively, it may present similarly to primary ovarian malignancy. This case report describes a case of presumed ovarian malignancy with final pathologic diagnosis of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. We also propose several surgical strategies to approach this conundrum. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A postmenopausal woman with abdominal pain was found to have a 30 cm abdominopelvic mass with elevated CA-125 and CEA presumably a primary ovarian malignancy. During surgical staging, intraoperative findings we

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm presenting as renal colic; a case report and review of literature.

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (HAMN) are rare mucinous appendiceal tumors that are mostly incidentally discovered and histologically show marked cytoplasmic atypia. We report a 62-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with acute right flank pain mimicking renal colic. Abdominal and pelvis CT scans showed no calculi or hydronephrosis. Incidentally, a markedly distended retrocecal appendix was identified and an appendectomy was performed. Histopathology revealed an HAMN of size 5.8 cm. HAMN are one of the rare and somewhat recently described epithelial appendiceal tumors. The lat

Rare presentation of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) as an appendicular lump: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMN) is about 0.2%-0.3% in the specimens of the appendix. The LAMN may appear unremarkable or can present as mucin-filled, crystally dilated tissues. The diagnosis of early-stage AMN is mostly incidental. It is of vital importance to know the features of LAMN for a timely diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male came with the complaint of right iliac fossa swelling along with severe intensity pain and a single episode of vomiting. A 4 × 4cm tender, soft, cystic, mobile swelling was found upon the examination. Contrast-enh

Low-grade Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Cervix: Report of 3 Cases of a Rare Neoplasm With Review of the Literature.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are uncommon in the cervix with almost all representing neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs), either small cell or large cell type. Cervical low-grade neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are extremely rare with few recent reports using contemporary modern diagnostic criteria. We report 3 cases of cervical NET in patients aged 32 to 57 yr and undertake a review of the literature. The first case was a pure grade 2 NET with pelvic lymph node metastasis (FIGO stage IIIC1). In the second case, a grade 1 NET was associated with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, adenocarcinoma

A case of Endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma with synchronous low-grade Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and Pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare condition usually associated with ruptured low-grade mucinous neoplasm of the appendix. Rarely, PMP can originate from mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary. However, the coexistence of adenocarcinoma of the endometrium and appendiceal mucinous neoplasm has not been reported. We present the case of a post-menopausal woman with endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma with unexpected low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and PMP.

A rare presentation of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm within an amyand's hernia: a case report.

An Amyand's hernia is characterised as the presence of the appendix in an inguinal hernial sac. During laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallbladder polyps, an incidental Amyand's hernia was discovered in a 75-year-old female patient. On examination, the hernia contained an appendiceal mucocele but no evidence of perforation. An open appendicectomy with tension-free mesh repair was performed for the hernia. The histopathological report of the appendix was a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), an entity that is just as rare as an Amyand's hernia. The patient had the right inguinal sw

A Multi-institutional Study of Peritoneal Recurrence Following Resection of Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dissemination of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs), sometimes referred to as pseudomyxoma peritonei, can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the natural history of localized (non-disseminated) LAMNs. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the risk of peritoneal recurrence in patients with localized LAMNs. METHODS: We performed a multi-institutional retrospective review of patients with pathologically confirmed localized LAMNs. Baseline characteristics, pathology, and follow-up data were collected. The primary e

Progression to pseudomyxoma peritonei in patients with low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms discovered at time of appendectomy.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of a low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) during appendectomy is a rare scenario. These neoplasms can progress to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), however the incidence of progression is not well known. METHODS: The records of all patients with a diagnosis of localized LAMN found during appendectomy were identified, and demographic, tumor, surveillance, and outcome variables were analyzed. RESULTS: Progression to PMP occurred in 20% of patients in an average of 12.4 months after appendectomy with median follow-up of 18 months. Tumor variables such as margin p

Low-grade mucinous appendiceal neoplasm mimicking an ovarian lesion: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal tumors are rare lesions that may not be easily differentiated from primary ovarian lesions preoperatively, despite the use of advanced diagnostic methods by experienced clinicians. CASE SUMMARY: A 59-year-old G2P2 woman, with chronic pelvic pain, underwent a pelvic ultrasound that revealed an adnexal mass measuring 58 mm × 34 mm × 36 mm, with irregular borders, heterogeneous echogenicity, no color Doppler vascularization and without acoustic shadowing. Normal ovarian tissue was visualized in contact with the lesion, and it was impossible to separate the lesion from the

Laparoscopic cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for perforated low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is an established treatment for pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) from perforated low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN II). In a selected group of LAMN II patients without established PMP, CRS/HIPEC can be performed laparoscopically (L-CRS/HIPEC); however the short-term benefits and safety of this approach have yet to be determined. This study aims to determine the short-term outcomes from a series of L-CRS/HIPEC LAMN II patients compared to those who have undergone a similar open operation (O-C

Clinicopathologic Features of Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Single-institution Experience of 117 Cases.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is an enigmatic tumor that lacks the capacity for classic invasion but can dissect through the appendiceal wall, causing pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Most large studies of the histologic spectrum of LAMN and its rate of associated PMP include cases submitted from outside institutions, potentially skewing their findings. We identified 117 cases of LAMN at our institution. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides from each were reviewed, and clinical and pathologic parameters were noted. The patients were 76 females and 41 males, with a mean age of 60

An incidental finding of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm during cesarean section: A case report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively because of a lack of characteristic symptoms. A 24-year-old female with no symptoms before pregnancy underwent an elective cesarean section at 38 weeks of gestation because of cephalo-pelvic disproportion. Although no abnormalities were detected in the newborn, uterus, or uterine adnexa, a sausage-like, swollen appendix was noted. The patient underwent appendectomy. Pathology showed the tumor was a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.

Intestinal obstruction caused by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal obstructions due to appendiceal pathology are rare. Obstructions caused by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rarer still. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 79-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for mechanical small intestinal obstruction. The patient had undergone prior left oophorectomy via a lower abdominal incision. Physical examination revealed abdominal distension and slight tenderness. Laboratory analysis was unremarkable. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated dilation of an obstructed small intestinal loop without evidence of

Low-grade papillary schneiderian carcinoma, a unique and deceptively bland malignant neoplasm: report of a case.

The sinonasal tract harbors several different types of papillomas, some of which can progress to carcinoma. The most frequent among these are inverted and oncocytic Schneiderian papillomas. The rates of progression are somewhat controversial but are approximately 5% to 10% and are almost invariably described in the literature as in situ or invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Other carcinoma types, such as mucoepidermoid and sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, have also been described. Almost all of the described patterns of malignancy involve frank carcinoma with overtly dysplastic nuclear fea

Hibernoma: comparing imaging appearance with more commonly encountered benign or low-grade lipomatous neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Hibernoma is a benign neoplasm comprised of brown fat and characteristic hibernoma cells often occurring in adults with proximal extremity/truncal predilection. Limited reports regarding imaging appearance and clinicopathological features of this rare tumor are available. Four histological subtypes have been described. We present nine patients with hibernoma evaluating preoperative imaging findings (eight MRI; one PET, CT), which may distinguish hibernoma from more common benign or low-grade lipomatous neoplasms and attempt to correlate imaging with histological subtype. Frequent mutations in SH2D1A (XLP) in males presenting with high-grade mature B-cell neoplasms.

X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP) is caused by mutations in SH2D1A, and is associated with overwhelming infectious mononucleosis, aplastic anemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and B-cell lymphomas. However, the frequency of SH2D1A mutations in males who present with B NHL is unknown. Five cases of XLP were diagnosed among 158 males presenting with B NHL (approximately 3.2%). Four of the patients had two episodes of B NHL and one had a single episode of B NHL followed by aggressive infectious mononucleosis. Prospective screening for XLP in males with B-cell lymphoma at the time of initial d

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a low grade myxoid renal epithelial neoplasm: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Recently, several case reports have described a rare but distinct subtype of renal tumor, referred to as a "low grade renal epithelial neoplasm," that appears to have a better prognosis than conventional renal cell carcinoma does. This report describes the cytologic features of this tumor as determined by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. CASE: A 53-year-old woman with a history of lymphoma had a renal mass incidentally discovered on an abdominal computed tomographic scan performed for lymphoma restaging. Results of an FNA biopsy showed relatively uniform, medium-sized tumor ce

Case Report: Lumbar herniation of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking a chronic abscess.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are uncommon tumors that may lead to peritoneal dissemination if not completely excised, yet they often present with nonspecific symptoms. We describe a 53-year-old male with a three-year history of recurrent right lumbar "abscesses" whose contrast-enhanced CT suggested herniation of the ileocecal region into the abdominal wall. Laparoscopic exploration revealed a superior lumbar hernia containing an enlarged appendix with surrounding purulent fluid. The patient underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection with side-to-side ileocolic anastomosis a

Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm With Discontinuous Mucin Infiltration Into the Cecal Wall: A Case Report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) can lead to intraperitoneal dissemination and subsequent pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Therefore, achieving complete resection, typically by appendectomy, is considered important for curative treatment. We report a case in which discontinuous mucin infiltration into the cecal wall was identified only after secondary resection, providing insight into the extent of surgical resection. To the best of our knowledge, such cases appear to be rare, with limited reports in the literature. A 60-year-old female was incidentally found to have an enlarged app

Incidentally Detected Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Following Laparoscopic Appendectomy for Acute Appendicitis.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare entities that account for a small proportion of all gastrointestinal malignancies and are most often discovered incidentally on histopathological examination of appendectomy specimens. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain and was found to have acute appendicitis on computed tomography imaging. She underwent an uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy, and final pathology revealed a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) confined to the appendix, staged a
