Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the digestive system, comprising two main distinctive entities, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Besides gastrointestinal manifestations, IBD causes extraintestinal manifestations in the central and peripheral nervous system. The incidence of neurological complications in IBD ranges from 0.25% to 47.5%. The pathophysiology of neurological manifestations of IBD is mostly immune mediated, but dysfunction of the brain-gut axis, arterial and venous thromboembolism, infections, nutritional deficiencies

We address the impact of the tropical environment on the human nervous system using the multifaceted approach characteristic of environmental neurology. First, environmental factors are examined according to their nature (physical, chemical and biological) and in relation to human activity and behavior. Some factors are specific to the tropics (climate and infections), while others are non-specific (chemicals, human communities and their way of life). Second, we examine the major role of human adaptation to the success of Homo sapiens, with emphasis on the linkage between thermoregulation and

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine was first introduced in Neurology as a tool to facilitate access to acute stroke treatment. More recently, evidence has emerged of the use of telemedicine in several other areas of Neurology. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social isolation, Brazilian authorities have expanded the regulation of the use of telemedicine, thus allowing the treatment of many patients with neurological diseases to be conducted with less risk of SARS-CoV-2 contamination.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to critically review the current evidence of the use, efficacy, saf

The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are reminiscent of those of acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by cytokine release syndrome and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis that is observed in patients with other coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. Neurologists face the challenge of assessing patients with pre-existing neurological diseases who have contracted SARS-CoV-2, patients with COVID-19 who present neurological emergencies, and patients who are carriers of the virus and have developed secondary neurological complications, either during the course of the diseas

The founders of neurology in the late 19th century and early 20th century laid the foundation for modern geriatric neurology by detailed observations, in their patients, of the clinical expressions of aging of the nervous system. Further advances in clinical manifestations of aging and more detailed examination of disease states in the elderly accelerated in the last quarter of the 20th century. Basic, translational, and clinical research support of geriatric neurology studies expanded and advanced during this period and into the 21st century. The size and sophistication of this movement was s

Ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury-all have in common early brain injury due to brain tissue destruction, reduced cerebral blood flow and oxygen delivery, and overall substantial morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiology of brain tissue damage likely includes common cellular mechanisms. Neuroprotection has seldom, if ever, been shown to reduce early brain injury. Secondary brain injury develops after these conditions due to macroscopic events such as increased intracranial pressure and reduced cerebral blood flow, as well as cellul

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most celebrated writers of all time. He published several masterpieces, some of which include references to neurological diseases. Poe suffered from recurrent depression, suggesting a bipolar disorder, as well as alcohol and drug abuse, which in fact led to his death from complications related to alcoholism. Various hypotheses were put forward, including Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Hippocrates is one of the most influential medical doctors of all times. He started observing and experimenting in times of mysticism and magic. He carried a holistic and humanitarian approach to the patient with examination as the principal approach-inspection, palpation and auscultation are still the most important tools in diagnosing algorithms of today. He had immense experience with the human body most likely due to numerous wound treatments he had performed; some even believe he performed autopsies despite the negative trend at the time. Hippocrates identified the brain as the analyst of

We here review Babylonian descriptions of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, stroke, psychoses, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, psychopathic behaviour, depression and anxiety. Most of these accounts date from the first Babylonian dynasty of the first half of the second millennium BC, within a millennium and a half of the origin of writing. The Babylonians were remarkably acute and objective observers of medical disorders and human behaviour. Their detailed descriptions are surprisingly similar to modern 19th and 20th century AD textbook accounts, with the excep

Congenital disorders of glycosylation comprise most of the nearly 70 genetic disorders known to be caused by impaired synthesis of glycoconjugates. The effects are expressed in most organ systems, and most involve the nervous system. Typical manifestations include structural abnormalities (eg, rapidly progressive cerebellar atrophy), myopathies (including congenital muscular dystrophies and limb-girdle dystrophies), strokes and stroke-like episodes, epileptic seizures, developmental delay, and demyelinating neuropathy. Patients can also have neurological symptoms associated with coagulopathies

Brain malformations, particularly related to early brain development, are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of fetal neurological disorders. Fetal cerebral malformation, predominantly of impaired prosencephalic development namely agenesis of the corpus callosum and septo-optic dysplasia, is the main pathological feature in fetus, and causes prominent neurodevelopmental retardation, and associated with congenital facial anomalies and visual disorders. Differential diagnosis of brain malformations can be extremely difficult even through magnetic resonance imaging. Advances in geno

Endemic skeletal fluorosis is widely prevalent in India and is a major public health problem. The first ever report of endemic skeletal fluorosis and neurological manifestation was from Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh in the year 1937. Epidemiological and experimental studies in the endemic areas suggest the role of temperate climate, hard physical labor, nutritional status, presence of abnormal concentrations of trace elements like strontium, uranium, silica in water supplies, high fluoride levels in foods and presence of kidney disease in the development of skeletal fluorosis. Neurologic

Data from randomized therapeutic trials often provide little relevant evidence for therapeutic decisions physicians make daily. By illustrating the nuances of these four complex cases involving cerebrovascular disease, the authors stress the importance of more time spent by specialists at the bed-side, exploring patients' symptoms and learning their thoughts, fears, biases, and wishes.

There have been major advances in stroke treatment based on robust evidence from large clinical trials. This review covers both acute treatment and secondary prevention. Thrombolysis is now established as a therapy for ischaemic stroke presenting within 3 hours, and the possibility of extending the time window and refining the selection of suitable patients, is being addressed in further trials. Anticoagulants are of proven benefit in cardioembolic stroke, and particularly atrial fibrillation. For prevention of other stroke subtypes antiplatelet agents appear to have a better risk-benefit rati

INTRODUCTION: Dysmorphology is a relatively modern science which is very wide, continuously advancing and inevitably related to infantile neurology and genetics.
DEVELOPMENT: A neuropaediatrician, before making indiscriminate use of such major complementary investigations as neurogenetics and imaging techniques to diagnose a dysmorphic syndrome, should obtain a detailed clinical history and, particularly, a very careful physical examination, including adequate neurological examination. Thus in neuropaediatrics the final diagnosis and early determination of normality or abnormality is based on

Hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness) accompanies many diseases. 14% of the total Austrian population regularly have problems staying awake during the day or are prone to taking spontaneous naps. Hypersomnia is a symptom of the sleep apnea syndrome, which is a risk factor for cerebrovascular disorders. Daytime sleepiness is also a characteristic symptom of narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, episodic hypersomnia, and many more neurological or psychiatric disorders; it can also be drug induced. Involvement of brain structures which are essential for the regulation of the sleep wake cycle as a resu

Since 1990, many mutations, in genes encoding ion channels have been discovered to cause disorders characterized by hyper- or hypoexcitability of skeletal muscle or the central nervous system (CNS): i) mutations in the muscle chloride channel gene lead to a loss or change of function of the channels and cause an abnormally low total chloride conductance resulting in hyperexcitability of the muscle fiber membrane in the dominant and recessive form of myotonia congenita; ii) numerous dominant point mutations in the gene encoding the muscle sodium channel alpha-subunit cause incomplete sodium cha
