Previous studies have reported diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) changes within the optic radiations of patients after optic neuritis (ON). We aimed to study optic radiation DTI changes over 12 months following acute ON and to study correlations between DTI parameters and damage to the optic nerve and primary visual cortex (V1). We measured DTI parameters [fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD), and mean diffusivity (MD)] from the optic radiations of 38 acute ON patients at presentation and 6 and 12 months after acute ON. In addition, we measured retinal nerve

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used as an adjunct to colposcopy in order to detect precancerous and cancerous cervical lesions. Optical clearing agents (OCAs) temporarily reduce the optical scattering of biological tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate their influence on OCT imaging. OCT images were taken from unsuspicious and suspicious areas of fresh conization specimens immediately after resection and 5, 10, and 20 min after application of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or polyethylene glycol (PEG). Corresponding histologies were obtained from all sites. The images tak

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increases in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from diffusion-weighted (DW) imaging are thought to be due to axonal disruption, and changes have been well documented in multiple sclerosis lesions. DW imaging of the optic nerves, however, presents many challenges. The goal of this study was to measure ADC in patients with optic neuritis by using zonal oblique multisection echoplanar imaging.
METHODS: The optic nerves of eighteen patients who had experienced an attack of optic neuritis 1 year previously and 11 control subjects were imaged with the diffusion sequence (

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the integrity of the optic nerve using the ratio between T1WI and T2WI (T1/T2) MRI signal intensities, and to assess whether inter-eye differences could indicate the presence of lesions in the optic nerve.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cohort included eighteen healthy controls and forty-nine individuals with multiple sclerosis; from those, thirty-two had a previous episode of optic neuritis. A method was trained to generate automatic segmentations of the optic nerve. Provided masks were then applied to the T1/T2 map and the mean pro

PURPOSE: To describe modern multimodal imaging of the choroidal and optic disk vessels in optic disk pits.
METHODS: Case reports of four patients with optic disk pit who underwent multimodal imaging of the optic pit and surrounding structures. Patients included in this article were found to have optic disk pits and subsequently underwent multimodal imaging.
RESULTS: Cilioretinal arteries were present in two of the four cases (50%). SPECTRALIS optical coherence tomography showed intraretinal and subretinal fluid in all cases. Small vessels in the choroid and in the disk around the pit were al

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is a relatively common cause of visual loss and results from hypoperfusion of the small arteries of the anterior portion of the optic nerve. AION is the leading cause of sudden optic nerve related vision loss with approximately 10 cases per 100'000 in the population over 50 years. To date there is no established treatment for AION and therefore a better understanding of the events occurring at the level of the optic nerve head (ONH) would be important to design future therapeutic strategies. The optical properties of the eye allow imaging of the optic

BACKGROUND: Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thinning is associated with brain atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS). An influence of optic neuritis is well documented but sparsely investigated. Recently, the retinal ganglion cell layer (GCL) has been shown to provide superior information regarding visual function and retinal neurodegeneration as compared with RNFL.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of white and grey matter brain volume with peripapillary RNFL and macular GCL in MS patients with and without a history of optic neuritis.
METHODS: 63 patients with relapsing-remitting MS we

PURPOSE: To demonstrate whether optical coherence tomography (OCT-3) and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT-2) can be used to measure changes of the optic disc and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in eyes with acute retrobulbar optic neuritis that have no clinically apparent optic disc swelling. To correlate these findings with presentation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the affected optic nerve.
METHODS: Eight consecutive patients with acute retrobulbar optic neuritis, who had no prior optic neuritis in either eye, were prospectively investigated at presentation and at bet

We evaluated two cases of congenital optic disc anomaly with the Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT) that could be mistaken for glaucomatous optic disc. One was an optic disc coloboma with a visual field defect and the other had an optic disc pit without a visual field defect. HRT was abnormal only in the eye with optic disc pit with normal fields. While HRT can be a valuable adjunct to disc evaluation and follow-up, it cannot be used in isolation in the differentiation of abnormal from normal optic discs.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to being a risk factor for breast cancer, breast density has been hypothesized to be a surrogate biomarker for predicting response to endocrine-based chemotherapies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a noninvasive bedside scanner based on diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging (DOSI) provides quantitative metrics to measure and track changes in breast tissue composition and density. To access a broad range of densities in a limited patient population, we performed optical measurements on the contralateral normal breast of patients before and during neoa

We measure the sub-picosecond optical impulse response of a system consisting of a varying 1D diffusive medium and a stationary hidden object. It is shown that by averaging the temporal optical field response of a diffusive medium (as opposed to the optical intensity response) the signal-to-noise ratio of the object's reflection can be improved considerably. The Spectral-Ballistic-Imaging technique is used to reconstruct the optical-field impulse response with a 200fs temporal resolution.

PURPOSE: To develop a method of averaging optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography to improve visualization of choriocapillaris structure.
METHODS: A stack of OCT angiographic data from vascular layers were placed into the red-green-blue channels of a conventional digital color image. The superficial plexus was placed in the blue channel, choriocapillaris in the green, and deep vascular plexus in the red channel. The red-green-blue images derived from nine separate OCT angiographic scans were registered using an automatic registration sequence and the images were averaged. The averaged

The relative atomic-scale motion between layers in van der Waals layered materials offers a new route to realizing two-dimensional ferroelectricity. However, directly measuring the extent of interlayer sliding remains challenging. Here, we use wide-field second-harmonic generation (SHG) imaging to quantitatively map interlayer sliding in few-layer 1T'-ReS2, a model platform enabled by centrosymmetry in each monolayer and weak coupling between layers. We discover multiple discrete stacking configurations in the trilayer and four-layer samples, manifested as characteristic SHG intensity values.

PURPOSE: Although optical (OPI) and ultrasonic imaging (USI) have each been independently investigated as non-invasive alternatives to radiography (Xray) in scoliosis assessment, no study has yet directly compared their clinical performance. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical agreement and validity of OPI and USI, using Xray as the reference standard.
METHODS: Radiographic Cobb angle served as the gold standard for clinical evaluation of two non-invasive methods. The OPI-angle was derived from spine models fitted to digitised surface data based on structured-light, while USI-angle was

SIGNIFICANCE: Strong scattering in biological tissues limits the achievable imaging depth and produces noiseboth coherent and incoherentthat impairs contrast in volumetric in vivo reconstructions. By dynamically tailoring spatial and temporal coherence to suppress scattered photons, spatio-temporal optical coherence imaging (STOC) enables high-contrast, high-resolution in vivo visualization, with direct applications in ophthalmic diagnostics and complex tissue imaging.
AIM: The primary aim of this work is to formalize and validate the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of S

OBJECTIVE: Initial biopsy specimens in suspected thyroid cancers may be nondiagnostic. Dynamic optical contrast imaging (DOCI) leverages endogenous fluorophore autofluorescence to examine the structural and metabolic properties of tissues. This preliminary study demonstrates DOCI's ability to differentiate between thyroid cancer histological subtypes.
STUDY DESIGN: In vitro study of human thyroid tissue.
SETTING: Single tertiary referral center.
METHODS: Tissues from patients who underwent thyroidectomy for papillary (PTC), follicular (FTC), or anaplastic (ATC) thyroid cancer were included.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a leading cause of neurological disability, imposes a critical need for early and precise diagnosis due to its complex pathological heterogeneity, which directly impacts treatment efficacy and patient prognosis. Although conventional imaging techniques (e.g., CT, MRI) provide structural insights, their inherent limitations in molecular specificity, sensitivity for subtle lesions, and real-time dynamic monitoring necessitate the development of complementary approaches. Optical imaging, including fluorescence, bioluminescence, and photoacoustic imaging, have emerged

Diabetes, characterized by heightened blood sugar levels, can lead to a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which adversely impacts the eyes due to elevated blood sugar affecting the retinal blood vessels. The most common cause of blindness in diabetics is thought to be Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), particularly in working-age individuals living in poor nations. People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes may develop this illness, and the risk rises with the length of diabetes and inadequate blood sugar management. There are limits to traditional approaches for the early identification of diabe

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel technology for performing real-time high-speed and high-resolution cross-sectional imaging on the micro-scale in situ. It is analogous to ultrasound imaging, except that it uses light instead of sound. OCT has recently been introduced in auditory research to visualize the various structures of the ear with a minimally invasive operation. In addition, OCT can be used as a vibrometry system that is capable to detect sound-induced sub-nanometer vibrations of the middle and inner ear. OCT-vibrometry measures depth-resolved vibrations into the specimen,
