Root resorption and orthodontic treatment. Review of the literature.

The aim of this paper was to provide a systematic review of the literature on the root resorption caused by orthodontic treatment. Original papers on this subject, published in English from January 2000 until December 2005, were located in the MEDLINE/PubMed database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. Root resorption is the most common sequela of the orthodontic treatment. It is an inflammatory process that leads to an ischemic necrosis localized in the periodontal ligament when the orthodontic force is applied. The onset and progression of root resorption ar

Quantitative proteomic analysis of gingival crevicular fluids to identify novel biomarkers of gingival recession in orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To identify gingival recession-related biomarkers in orthodontic patients, we compared the proteome of gingival crevicular fluids (GCF) from healthy gingiva without orthodontic treatment (GH), healthy gingiva undergoing orthodontic treatment (OGH), and recessed gingiva undergoing orthodontic treatment (OGR). METHODS: GCF samples were obtained from the anterior teeth of 15 volunteers (n = 5/group). Quantitative proteomic analysis was performed using DIA-based liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Gene Ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genom

Influence of orthodontic appliances and nitrate on the oral microbiota.

In this pilot study, we investigated the bacterial changes introduced on the subgingival, tongue, and saliva microbiota during fixed orthodontic treatment, with or without daily administration of nitrate-containing beet juice for 2 weeks in 22 individuals with good general health. We followed clinical parameters in combination with microbiota changes before, after 2 weeks, and after 6 months of treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. In accordance with variations in community composition at the sampling sites, effects to orthodontic treatment differed. Subgingival communities responded pr

Is Inflammation a Friend or Foe for Orthodontic Treatment?: Inflammation in Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Root Resorption and Accelerating Tooth Movement.

The aim of this paper is to provide a review on the role of inflammation in orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) and accelerating orthodontic tooth movement (AOTM) in orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is stimulated by remodeling of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone. These remodeling activities and tooth displacement are involved in the occurrence of an inflammatory process in the periodontium, in response to orthodontic forces. Inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins (PGs), interleukins (Ils; IL-1, -6, -17), the tumor necrosis

Morphological characteristics of dentitions developing excessive root resorption during orthodontic treatment.

The present study focuses on orthodontically provoked, excessive root resorption. The purpose was to identify in these cases common morphological features in radiographic diagnostic material taken before treatment. The material was submitted by 35 Danish orthodontists. The goal was to improve the future orthodontic diagnostics of the dentition in order to prevent severe root resorption during treatment. The study indicates that: (1) there is a strong connection between various dental morphological characteristics, such as invagination, length of root, and root shapes, especially taurodontism,

Negligible tooth resorptions after anterior open bite treatment using skeletal anchorage with miniplates.

INTRODUCTION: When miniplates are used as anchoring for orthodontic mechanics for anterior open bite correction by retraction of anterior teeth and posterior teeth intrusion and retraction, orthodontically induced inflammatory external apical root resorption is clinically negligible. METHODS: A homogeneous sample of 32 patients was used, and the roots of the teeth were compared on CT scans performed before and after orthodontic treatment. RESULTS: The observed root resorption was minimal, and this can be explained by the uniform distribution of forces in several teeth, simultaneously, in the

Influence of bisphosphonates on orthodontic tooth movement in mice.

Mechanical stress such as orthodontic tooth movement induces osteoclastogenesis. Sometimes, excessive mechanical stress results in root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. It has been reported that bisphosphonate inhibits osteoclastogenesis. Recently, there have been concerns for orthodontic patients receiving bisphosphonates. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bisphosphonates on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in mice. A nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) closed coil spring delivering a force of 10 g was inserted between the upper anterior alveolar bone

[Clinical diagnosis and treatment strategies for orthodontic-related mucogingival deformities and conditions].

Gingival recession is a common complication of orthodontic treatment, with its occurrence associated with multiple factors such as periodontal phenotype, the width and thickness of keratinized gingiva, alveolar bone morphology, and plaque control. This article first reviews the impact of orthodontic tooth movement, particularly labial tipping of anterior teeth, on periodontal hard and soft tissues. It emphasizes that the risks of orthodontic-related bone fenestration, bone dehiscence, and gingival recession are significantly increased in the presence of a thin gingival biotype, inadequate kera

Postorthodontic root approximation after opening space for maxillary lateral incisor implants.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic space opening during adolescence is a common treatment for congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors. Because of continued facial growth and compensatory tooth eruption, several years can elapse between completion of orthodontic treatment for a teenage patient and implant placement. There are reports that, after successful orthodontic opening of the implant space, the central incisor and canine roots reapproximate during retention and prevent implant placement. METHODS: To study this phenomenon, the records of 94 patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors
