OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM) has become the surgical procedure of choice for resection of maxillary sinus inverted papillomas (IPs). Traditionally, IPs pedicled on the anterior and/or lateral walls of the maxillary sinus have required an adjuvant Caldwell-Luc approach due to decreased visualization with transnasal endoscopy in these locations. The objective of the current study is to evaluate outcomes following endoscopic resection of anterolateral maxillary sinus IPs.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Over 6 years, a total of 35 pati

BACKGROUND: Benign lesions of the nasal cavity represent a diverse group of pathologies. Furthermore, each of these disorders may present differently in any given patient as pain and discomfort, epistaxis, headaches, vision changes, or nasal obstruction. Although these nasal masses are benign, many of them have a significant capacity for local tissue destruction and symptomatology secondary to this destruction. Advances in office-based endoscopic nasendoscopy have equipped the otolaryngologist with a safe, inexpensive, and rapid means of directly visualizing lesions within the nasal cavity and

BACKGROUND: There are significant variations in the geographical distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes throughout the world, and some genotypes are associated with different clinical outcomes. Eight genotypes of human HBV (designated A-H) have been reported. The present study was designed to examine the distribution of HBV genotypes among patients at various stages of chronic type B liver disease in Yunnan Province, China, and to explore its significance and the relationship of HBV genotype with gender and age, clinical spectrum of chronic HBV infection, and viral replicative activ

INTRODUCTION: Inverted papillomas require radical resection because of their high recurrence rate and expansive growth and the risk of malignant degeneration. Since the late 1980s surgical resection has been performed predominantly as an endoscopy-/microscopy-aided procedure through an endonasal approach. The extranasal approach is only used in the case of papillomas in unusual locations or ones that have expanded to an exceptional degree. The goal of the present study was a comparative evaluation of the results of this relatively new treatment strategy and of external sinus surgery in our own

Inverted papillomas (IPs), although histologically benign, are aggressive lesions that may recur after excision. They usually present as unilateral firm, bulky, red and vascular masses. The objective of this case series is to discuss the surgical treatment options for IPs and to review the literature with a special emphasis on our experience with endoscopic medial maxillectomy. A retrospective review of the data of patients with IP treated by endoscopic medial maxillectomy was performed. This report describes the surgical experience with five patients with IP arising from various sites on the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The majority of inverted nasal papilloma are benign and treatment is by complete local surgical removal. There is an associated real, but small risk of malignancy, which may coexist at the time of presentation or develop at a later time. This article reviews some of the recent publications addressing the association of inverted papilloma with malignancy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Neither the etiology of inverted papilloma nor the factors responsible for malignant transformation are fully elucidated to date. Inverted papilloma is associated with squamous cell carcinoma in approximate

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign sinonasal tumor characterized by a potentially invasive nature. The lateral nasal wall represents the most common site of origin, whereas paranasal sinuses are frequently involved by extension. In contrast, primary sinus inverted papillomas have rarely been reported. The present study describes a 52-year-old man that presented with a one-year history of unilateral nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, epistaxis, occipital headache and decreased sense of smell. After nasal endoscopic examination, computed tomography was taken and endoscopic biopsy was performed

It is well known that inverted papilloma (IP) is sometimes associated with malignancies; however, the association of IP with verrucous carcinoma (VC) is extremely rare. We herein report a case of IP in the nasal cavity with VC in the maxillary sinus. A 73-year-old Japanese woman presented with a 3-month history of right-sided nasal obstruction and repetitive epistaxis. A biopsy of the mass was performed and the pathological result proved to be IP. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a moderately enhanced soft-tissue lesion filling the right nasal cavity and a ring-enhan

We performed endoscopic resection on six patients who had inverted papillomas of the nasal cavity. Disease was completely cleared in four patients after a single procedure, while two others--both of whom had bilateral disease--required repeat surgery. At follow-up, which ranged from 6 months to 5 years, all patients were disease-free. We believe that endoscopic surgery is ideally suited for the treatment of appropriately selected patients who have limited disease and who are likely to adhere conscientiously to a regular follow-up program.

Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is a rare benign lesion. We report, to our knowledge, the first case of high-grade ureteral obstruction caused by an inverted papilloma with coexistent carcinomatous elements. Our patient was referred for evaluation of painless, gross hematuria. Imaging studies demonstrated a left proximal ureteral filling defect causing severe left-sided hydroureteronephrosis. Ureteroscopy demonstrated a 1-cm papillary lesion on the medial aspect of the proximal ureteral wall. Pathologic examination documented a lesion with elements of inverted papilloma and a small foc

A 63-year old man presented with urinary frequency and urge. An IVU showed a tumour in the lower right ureter. Partial ureterectomy was done with a uretero-ureterostomy. Pathological investigation showed an inverted papilloma. Inverted papilloma of the ureter should always be considered in the differential diagnosis before major surgery is done. There is an association between inverted papilloma and urothelial carcinoma. Our patient developed an invasive bladder tumour 6 years after the operation on the inverted papilloma.

We analyzed formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded materials from urothelial inverted papillomas using flow-cytometric DNA analysis to investigate the intrinsic nature in terms of the malignant potentials. DNA indices of the inverted papillomas ranged between 1.00 and 1.26 with a mean value of 1.12. The percentage of S phase of a tumor DNA histogram showed greater values in every case compared with a normal DNA histogram. This tumor form could be thus regarded as a diploid neoplastic disease with a relatively higher proliferative activity, although 1 case showed an aneuploid pattern (DNA index =

A case of inverted papilloma localized in the left pelvic ureter is described. The patient was submitted to a URS procedure with excisional biopsy of the tumor and fulguration of its base using the electric ureteral resectoscope. We believe that currently available endourologic techniques are the procedure of choice in the diagnosis of upper GU tract filling defects. An endourologic procedure permits conservative treatment when indicated and direct vision of the tumor site and urothelial mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign Schneiderian epithelial tumour with a well-recognized potential for recurrence and malignant transformation, most commonly to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Carcinoma arising in the nasopharynx after prior IP is exceedingly rare, and distinguishing malignant conversion from a metachronous nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) poses a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT: We report a rare, interesting case of a nasopharyngeal lesion with histopathological features of non-keratinizing SCC in a patient previously treated surgically for sinonasal IP. CONCLUSIO

Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) is a rare benign tumor of the urinary tract, most commonly arising in the bladder and characterized by an endophytic growth pattern. IUP primarily affects middle-aged and older men and typically presents with painless hematuria. IUP was first described in 1927 and recognized as an independent entity by the World Health Organization in 1973. It can be difficult to distinguish from urothelial carcinoma (UC), which can result in misdiagnosis and overtreatment. Genetic analyses have confirmed the benign nature of IUP. Activating mutations in RAS family genes (HR

INTRODUCTION: Nasal inverted papilloma (NIP) is a common nasal benign tumor, with a complex pathogenesis closely linked to inflammatory response. It can be classified into Grade-I and Grade-II phenotypes based on nasal epithelium abnormality. Our objective is to investigate potential inflammatory biomarkers in peripheral blood of NIP patients for preoperative assessment of disease severity.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed inflammatory cells in the peripheral blood of 63 healthy controls and 82 NIP patients, while distinguishing different phenotypes of NIP through immunofluorescent and he

Inverted papilloma (SIP) is a relatively rare benign epithelial tumor of the nasal cavity which characterized by an aggressive course with local destruction of surrounding structures, a tendency to recurrence and associated with malignancy. Etiology remains little understood. SIPs is most commonly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) and mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) genes, which are upregulated in recurrent SIPs.These factors are responsible for theinverted papilloma transformation into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC
