Distribution of paresthesias in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome reflects the degree of nerve damage at wrist.

OBJECTIVE: To verify whether the distribution of paresthesias in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is related to the degree of the neurophysiological involvement. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study and retrospectively evaluated 163 patients who referred to our electromyography lab and to which a clinical and electrophysiological diagnosis of CTS was made. We divided the patients into two groups: (1) patients complaining of paresthesias at the hand as a whole and (2) patients with paresthesias in the territory of the median nerve. We referred to the distribution of paresthe

Diver with acute abdominal pain, right leg paresthesias and weakness: a case report.

A 29-year-old man was brought to an emergency department by the United States Coast Guard with chief complaints of severe abdominal pain, right leg paresthesia and weakness following four deep air dives. Physical examination before recompression treatment was remarkable for diffuse abdominal tenderness and right leg weakness. The patient was diagnosed in the emergency room with type II decompression sickness (DCS) and underwent standard recompression therapy. He experienced complete resolution of weakness after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, but his abdominal pain was persistent. Further inv

Transient paresthesia following polymyxin B loading dose in a critically ill patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Polymyxins, including colistin and polymyxin B, are considered salvage therapy to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. Despite their importance, the clinical use of polymyxins is often constrained by their narrow therapeutic index, especially due to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Paresthesia associated with polymyxin B is often underreported, not fully understood, and only a few cases highlight this. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of transient paresthesia occurring shortly after the administration of a loading dose of polymyxin B in a cri

Musculoskeletal Pain and Right Leg Paresthesia Revealed as Large Ovarian Mucinous Cystadenoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Epithelial neoplasms are the most common and heterogenous group of ovarian tumors. Approximately 10-15% are primary ovarian mucinous neoplasms. Almost 80% of these consist of benign mucinous neoplasms, while the rest are borderline neoplasms, non-invasive (intraepithelial and intraglandular) carcinomas, and invasive carcinomas. Small ovarian cystadenomas are generally asymptomatic and are mainly found incidentally during an ultrasound examination for another gynecologic disorder. As their size increases, nonspecific symptoms and clinical signs develop as a result of mass effect to a

Tooth hypersensitivity associated with paresthesia after inferior alveolar nerve injury: case report and related neurophysiology.

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is usually caused by stretching or crushing of the neurovascular structures and postoperative intra-alveolar hematoma or edema after dental procedures. This results in paresthesia in the ipsilateral chin, lip (vermilion border, skin, and mucosa), and labial or buccal alveolar mucosa of the mandibular anterior teeth. However, there are no reports of sensory alterations in the teeth, especially tooth hypersensitivity, after IAN injury. I report a case in which paresthesia of the lower lip and hypersensitivity of the lower anterior teeth occurred simultaneousl

Tabes Dorsalis in a Patient Presenting With Right Lower Extremity Paresthesia and Cervical Spine Pain.

Syphilitic myelitis, also known as tabes dorsalis, is a disease affecting the posterior columns of the spinal cord and dorsal roots and presents as sensory ataxia and neuropathic pain and less commonly as paresthesia and gastrointestinal disturbance. Tabes dorsalis is the clinical manifestation of a previous infection with syphilis, and the average latency period from initial infection to presentation of symptoms is approximately 25 years. This is a rarely encountered manifestation of syphilis since the widespread usage of antibiotics. Penicillin G is the mainstay therapy of neurosyphilis and

"Abscess" as a perioperative risk factor for paresthesia after third molar extraction under general anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate postextractive neurological complications after third molar extraction under general anesthesia and to identify correlations between the surgical procedure, the third molar-related pathology, and neurological involvement. STUDY DESIGN: The clinical records of 183 patients were analyzed for a total of 408 third molars extracted at the Dental Clinic of Trieste (Italy). Individual effects of clinical data on the presence of paresthesia were evaluated by a logistic regression model. RESULTS: Neurological involvement was observed in 13 patients (6.1%). Mental Nerve Paresthesia, a Complication of Anesthesia in Non-surgical Endodontic Treatment: A Case Report .

Paresthesia is described as a burning or prickling sensation or partial numbness caused by neurologic injury. The sensory loss may be the result of a reversible and/or irreversible nerve damage, and it can be caused by local or systemic factors. Local factors include traumatic injuries caused by impacted teeth, local injection, endodontic therapy, implant placement and exposure to toxic materials. This article reports a paresthesia by anesthetic injection. A 44-year-old man reported moderate pain during chewing and exposure to cold. Upon clinical examination, extension of the tooth fracture li

Resolution of Apical Periodontitis-induced Mental Nerve Paresthesia Through Nonsurgical Endodontic Retreatment: A Case Report.

Paresthesia is a potential consequence of unsuccessful root canal treatment. Persistent infection resulting in apical periodontitis may enlarge sufficiently to involve the mental neurovascular bundle. The case presented in this report was referred for endodontic evaluation with a chief complaint of discomfort on mastication and persistent numbness of the lower left lip. Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed incomplete primary endodontic treatment of the left mandibular second premolar with complex internal anatomy. The untreated root canal system resulted in the progression of apical p

Mental nerve paresthesia associated with endodontic paste within the mandibular canal: report of a case.

The present study describes a case of endodontic paste (Endomethasone) penetration within and along the mandibular canal from the periapical zone of a lower first premolar following endodontic treatment of the latter. The clinical manifestations comprised anesthesia of the right side of the lower lip and paresthesia of the gums in the fourth quadrant, appearing immediately after endodontic treatment. The lip anesthesia was seen to decrease, with persistence of the gingival paresthesia, after 7 months.

Adjunctive Effect of Photobiomodulation Therapy with Nd:YAG Laser in the Treatment of Inferior Alveolar Nerve Paresthesia.

Background: Disruption of peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve in the field of maxillofacial surgery is a known risk due to the close connection of these branches with the bony structures of the maxilla and mandible. As a result, injuries of the lingual nerve and inferior alveolar nerve take place within routine maxillofacial surgery procedures, including local anesthetic injection, wisdom tooth surgery, and dental implant placement, resulting in paresthesia and dysesthesia. During the last three decades, low-level lasers (LLL) have been frequently used in various medical fields. Lately

Abnormal Paresthesias Associated With Radiofrequency Ablation of Lumbar Medial Branch Nerves: A Case Report.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective treatment that has occasionally been associated with transient paresthesias. This case report details an unusual presentation of paresthesias after lumbar medial branch RFA. A 48-year-old female patient reported pain, numbness, and swelling on the left buttock and posterolateral thigh. A physical exam revealed allodynia over the left posterolateral thigh without neurologic deficits two weeks after RFA of the left-sided lumbar medial branch nerves innervating the L4-L5 and L5-S1 facet joints. Shortly after the RFA of the contralateral targets, the p

Facial Numbness and Paresthesias Resolved with Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion: A Report of 3 Cases.

CASE: We report 3 patients with classic trigeminal neuropathy (TN) findings, which were due to compressive cervical radiculopathy, and provide a brief anatomic explanation for this association. In each case, left-sided disk herniation between the C5 and C7 levels caused TN and classic (dermatome appropriate) cervical radicular findings, all of which resolved with anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of TN caused by radicular compression in the caudal subaxial (C5-C7) cervical spine, which resolved after ACDF.

Tactile, thermal and pain sensibility in burned patients with and without chronic pain and paresthesia problems.

Abnormal return of cutaneous sensibility is common after burn injuries and many patients complain of painful and/or paresthetic sensations in their healed wounds. However, little is known about the exact nature and severity of these problems. The present study was designed to provide a quantitative evaluation of the cutaneous sensibility in burned patients. Tactile, thermal and pain thresholds were measured in 121 patients with healed burns paired-matched to 121 control healthy subjects more than 18 months after the burns. Testing was confined to both upper limbs and was performed in a healed

Leg paresthesias induced by magnetic brain stimulation in patients with thoracic spinal cord injury.

We studied the induction of leg paresthesias by magnetic stimulation of the brain in seven patients with thoracic T9-12 spinal cord injury and in four normal volunteers by delivering transcranial magnetic stimulation over scalp positions 1 cm apart with a Cadwell MES-10 magnetic stimulator and an 8-shaped magnetic coil at 100% stimulus intensity. We asked subjects to report sensations felt after each stimulus. In all normal subjects, magnetic stimulation evoked sensations described as tingling or a wave descending along the leg, usually accompanied by EMG responses in leg muscles. In three of

Infraorbital Paresthesia as a Potential Indication for Reconstruction of Pure Blowout Orbital Fractures: A Case Report.

Orbital floor fractures are among the most common fractures in the maxillofacial area. Nonetheless, muscular entrapment and enophthalmos are the only known reasons for orbital floor reconstruction, with little data supporting infraorbital nerve paresthesia as an indication. This case report presents a 30-year-old female patient who developed chronic infraorbital nerve paresthesia for 3 weeks as a result of an orbital blowout fracture involving the infraorbital canal. The patient underwent infraorbital nerve decompression and orbital floor reconstruction. The outcome was satisfactory, as the pa
