Maternal-paternal histocompatibility: lack of association with habitual abortions.

Class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA-A, -B) and class II (HLA-DR) antigens were determined in 60 and 30 carefully selected couples with multiple abortions, respectively. The study group was compared with fertile couples with no history of abortion and with a control group consisting of randomly matched women and men from our laboratory cell panel. No significant deviation from the calculated control mating frequencies was observed in the group with habitual abortions. When the study and control couples were grouped by ethnic origin into Ashkenazim and non-Ashkenazim, the frequencies of shared

Influences of paternal incarceration on children's maltreatment and polyvictimization risks.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is associated with child maltreatment. However, clarity on its influence across types is needed. Additionally, maltreatment exposures may co-occur and how paternal incarceration influences children's polyvictimization is not yet known. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influences of paternal incarceration on childhood emotional, physical, and sexual maltreatment by caregivers, as well as their exposure to multiple forms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Adolescents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were followed from Wave I (1994-5) (ave

Intergenerational Effects of Paternal Diets on Offspring Health and Reproduction.

Fat, protein, and micronutrients serve as essential components of human nutrition, and their balanced intake is critical for maintaining health. Chronic nutritional imbalances may adversely affect not only individual health but that of subsequent generations. Accumulating evidence indicates that paternal nutritional status before conception contributes to offspring health through diet-induced alterations in sperm quality and epigenetic programming. The genetic integrity and physiological condition of sperm are susceptible to long-term dietary exposures, providing a potential biological basis f

Paternal epigenetic inheritance increases susceptibility to methamphetamine taking.

We previously demonstrated that male progeny of cocaine-experienced sires resisted cocaine, expressed as delayed acquisition of cocaine self-administration. Here, we sought to determine whether this phenotype extended to another psychostimulant, methamphetamine (meth). Sires self-administered meth or cocaine or received yoked-saline infusions for 60 days, after which they were mated to naïve females. Some behaviors previously altered in cocaine-sired male rats, including object memory and anxiety-like behavior, were not influenced by paternal meth taking. In contrast to cocaine resistance in c

Paternal Depression and Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the lives of families worldwide. Findings suggest a substantial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mental health. Yet, much less is known about the impact of COVID-19 on paternal mental health. This study describes depression and anxiety and risk and protective factors among fathers of young children largely residing in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fathers (N = 70) of children 0 to 8 years old self-reported depression (EPDS, CESD, CESD-R) and anxiety (PASS, GAD-7) symptoms, while mothers (N = 236) provided reports of paternal depres

The Influence of Maternal and Paternal Parenting on Adolescent Brain Structure.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents raised in families with different maternal and paternal parenting combinations exhibit variations in neurocognition and psychopathology; however, whether neural differences exist remains unexplored. This study used a longitudinal twin sample to delineate how different parenting combinations influence adolescent brain structure and to elucidate the genetic contribution. METHODS: A cohort of 216 twins participated in parenting assessments during early adolescence and underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning during middle adolescence. We utilized latent profile analy

Paternal Borderline Symptoms and Offspring Outcomes in Young Adulthood.

Borderline personality disorder symptoms (BPDsx) in mothers have been linked to psychopathology in their offspring. However, it is still unclear whether BPDsx in fathers influences offspring psychopathology and, if so, how this risk transmission may occur. A total of 448 father-mother-offspring triads completed a longitudinal study following children from birth until age 20 and included self-report questionnaires and clinical interviews when children were 15 and 20 years old. Results revealed that paternal BPDsx were predictive of youth BPDsx and internalizing symptoms, even after controlling

Paternal nicotine exposure promotes hepatic fibrosis in offspring.

Paternal nicotine exposure can alter phenotypes in future generations. The aim of this study is to explore whether paternal nicotine exposure affects the hepatic repair to chronic injury which leads to hepatic fibrosis in offspring. Our results demonstrate that nicotine down regulates mmu-miR-15b expression via the hyper-methylation on its CpG island shore region in the spermatozoa. This epigenetic modification imprinted in the liver of the offspring. The decreased mmu-miR-15b promotes the expression of Wnt4 and activates the Wnt pathway in the offspring mice liver. The activation of the Wnt p

NICU Fathers: Improving the Quality of Paternal Support in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: Parental support in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is critical; yet, the nursing staff may struggle to provide optimal support to NICU fathers. Generally, fathers are not viewed as equally competent caregivers when compared with mothers, and fathers often impart these beliefs on themselves. Increasing the nursing staff's knowledge and understanding of paternal support can change attitudes and foster positive behavior changes, enhancing the perception of support received by NICU fathers. PURPOSE: To implement a needs assessment and educational intervention for the nursing

The association between maternal and paternal race and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hispanic black maternal race is a known risk factor for preterm birth. However, the contribution of paternal race is not as well established. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the risk of preterm birth among non-Hispanic black, non-Hispanic white, and mixed non-Hispanic black and non-Hispanic white dyads. STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based cohort study of all live births in the United States from 2015 to 2017, using live birth records from the National Vital Statistics System. Maternal and paternal preconception exposure to phenols and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Phenol exposure during pregnancy has been associated with preterm birth, but the potential effect of preconception exposure in either parent is unknown. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the preconception period is a critical window of vulnerability for adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether maternal and paternal preconception urinary concentrations of select phenols were associated with the risk of preterm birth among couples attending fertility care. METHODS: The analysis included 417 female and 229 male participants of the Environment and

Mating dynamics and multiple paternity in a long-lived vertebrate.

Multiple paternity is relatively common across diverse taxa; however, the drivers and implications related to paternal and maternal fitness are not well understood. Several hypotheses have been offered to explain the occurrence and frequency of multiple paternity. One set of hypotheses seeks to explain multiple paternity through direct and indirect benefits including increased genetic diversity or enhanced offspring fitness, whereas another set of hypotheses explains multiple paternity as a by-product of sexual conflict and population-specific parameters such as density. Here, we investigate m

Paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors: A meta-analysis.

Although there is a consensus that maternal depression is strongly related to child externalizing behaviors, research on the association between paternal depression and child externalizing behaviors is mixed. Some research shows that paternal depressive symptoms are positively associated with symptoms of externalizing behaviors, including oppositional-defiant behavior, conduct problems, and overall externalizing behavior, while other studies failed to find an association, or demonstrated a weak or negative association. Given that the most recent meta-analysis on paternal depression and child e

Paternal Incarceration and Early Sexual Onset among Adolescents.

Despite a growing literature documenting deleterious intergenerational consequences of incarceration, relatively little is known about how exposure to paternal incarceration is associated with risk behaviors in adolescence. In this article, we use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,405)-a cohort of urban children born around the turn of the 21st century and followed for 15 years-to examine the relationship between paternal incarceration and one indicator of adolescent risk behavior, early sexual onset. Results from adjusted logistic regression models show that pate

Males with Paternally Inherited MKRN3 Mutations May Be Asymptomatic.

Ten girls with sporadic central precocious puberty were screened for mutations in the maternally imprinted gene MKRN3. We detected 1 novel frameshift mutation (p.Arg351Serfs*44) and a previously described mutation (p.Pro161Argfs*10). In the course of investigating the family, genetic analysis found 2 asymptomatic males with paternally inherited MKRN3 mutations, which has not been reported in previous studies.

Paternal age at childbearing and offspring psychiatric and academic morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Advancing paternal age is associated with increased genetic mutations during spermatogenesis, which research suggests may cause psychiatric morbidity in the offspring. The effects of advancing paternal age at childbearing on offspring morbidity remain unclear, however, because of inconsistent epidemiologic findings and the inability of previous studies to rigorously rule out confounding factors. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between advancing paternal age at childbearing and numerous indexes of offspring morbidity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a popula

Paternal fenvalerate exposure influences reproductive functions in the offspring.

Fenvalerate (Fen), a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, has been shown to have adverse effects on male reproductive system. Thus, the aim of the present study was to elucidate whether these adverse effects are passed from exposed male mice to their offspring. Adult male mice received Fen (10 mg/kg) daily for 30 days and mated with untreated females to produce offspring. Fenvalerate significantly changed the methylation status of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (Ace), forkhead box O3 (Foxo3a), huntingtin-associated protein 1 (Hap1), nuclear receptor subfamily 3 (Nr3c2), promyelocytic leukemia (P

Subtle biobehavioral effects produced by paternal cocaine exposure.

Despite the increased prevalence of cocaine use and abuse in males when compared with females, possible effects of paternal cocaine exposure on biobehavioral development have received little attention. We therefore exposed male mice to cocaine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle for 10 weeks and then used those mice as sires. We then behaviorally phenotyped the F1 offspring to assess the consequences of paternal cocaine exposure on brain function. We report the presence of a subtle but significant increase in immobility in the tail suspension test, a measure of behavioral depression, following paterna
