Infliximab and tocilizumab reduce anxiety-like behavior, improve cognitive performance and reverse neuropathological alterations in juvenile rats with severe autoimmune arthritis.

Several studies have demonstrated that rheumatic diseases, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), are associated with anxiety-like behavior and a cognitive decline. Infliximab, a Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-a) inhibitor, and tocilizumab, an antibody against Interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor, are commonly used in the treatment of JIA. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of infliximab and tocilizumab on anxiety symptoms and cognitive function in a juvenile model of severe autoimmune arthritis. We found that both infliximab and tocilizumab improved anxiety-like behavior in the elevate

The cognitive engine of evaluative threat: socially prescribed perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety-a moderated mediation analysis of rumination and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SP) is a robust risk factor for Music Performance Anxiety (MPA), yet the underlying cognitive and regulatory mechanisms remain inadequately understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to delineate these pathways by constructing a moderated mediation model, examining rumination as a cognitive mediator and Self-Compassion (SC) as a multi-stage moderator. METHODS: Data were collected from 606 university music students. Analyses were conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 59) to test the moderated mediation, controlling for academic grade and perfo

The impact of a history of child abuse on cognitive performance: a cross-sectional study in older patients with a depressive, anxiety, or somatic symptom disorder.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major global burden with an enduring negative impact on mental and physical health. A history of child abuse is consistently associated with worse cognitive performance among adults; data in older age groups are inconclusive. Since affective symptoms and cognitive functioning are interrelated among older persons, a synergistic effect can be assumed in patients with affective symptoms who also have suffered from child abuse. This study examines the association between a history of child abuse and cognitive performance in such patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional data

Cocaine treatment before pregnancy differentially affects the anxiety and brain glucose metabolism of lactating rats if performed during adulthood or adolescence.

Cocaine exposure disrupts the maternal behavior of lactating rats, yet it is less known whether it alters the affective changes that accompany motherhood. As the long-term action of cocaine on anxiety varies according to the developmental stage of the individuals, this study aimed to compare the effect of a chronic treatment with cocaine to adult and adolescent non-pregnant females on their anxiety-like behavior and basal brain metabolic activity during lactation. Thus, adult and adolescent virgin rats were exposed to cocaine (0.0 or 15.0 mg/kg ip) during 10 days and were mated four days later

How the chance of missing the alarm during an on-call shift affects pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next day cognitive performance.

This study investigated how the chance of missing an alarm affects pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next day cognitive performance during on-call shifts. Participants (n = 24) completed one adaptation night, one control night and two on-call nights in a time-isolated sleep laboratory. On one of the on-call nights, participants were informed that they would be woken by a loud alarm that they would definitely not be able to sleep through (low chance of missing the alarm). On the other on-call night, participants were informed that they would be woken by a quiet alarm that they may sleep through (high

The performance of long vs. short questionnaire-based measures of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress among UK adults: A comparison of the patient health questionnaires, generalized anxiety disorder scales, malaise inventory, and Kessler scales.

It is often important to minimise the time participants in social science studies spend on completing questionnaire-based measures, reducing response burden, and increasing data quality. Here, we investigated the performance of the short versions of some widely used depression, anxiety, and psychological distress scales and compared them to the performance of longer versions of these scales (PHQ-2 vs PHQ-9, GAD-2 vs GAD-7, Malaise-3 vs Malaise-9, K6 vs K10). Across a sample of UK adults (N = 987, ages 18-86), we tested the existing factor structure and accuracy of the scales through confirmato

Configurational and predictive mechanisms of performance anxiety in female collegiate athletes: the synergistic roles of evaluative pressure, self-efficacy, and mental toughness.

BACKGROUND: Chinese University Basketball Association League (CUBAL) Division II female athletes face significant performance anxiety. Moving beyond traditional linear assumptions, this study integrates self-presentation theory and the positive psychological capital framework to investigate how external evaluative pressure (fear of negative evaluation), internal resources (self-efficacy, mental toughness), and competitive experience synergistically predict performance anxiety. METHODS: A dual-analytical design was employed with 143 female athletes. Partial least squares structural equation mo

Poor performance of PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in screening clinical depression and anxiety among a large sample of Chinese children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) are widely used symptom-based instruments for screening depression and anxiety. However, their validation in Chinese children and adolescents remains insufficient. We aim to investigate the performance and optimal cut-offs of PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in Chinese children and adolescents in screening clinical depression and anxiety, and to discuss the influencing factors of the cut-offs. METHODS: The study subjects were chosen from 3 sites of the Mental Health Survey for Children and Adolescents in Yu

Tele-emotion regulation therapy versus tele-guided imagery therapy on sexual performance anxiety in endometrial and ovarian cancer: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in cancer treatment have led to increasing life expectancy. Few studies have been conducted on sexual anxiety in women affected by gynecologic cancers who suffer from physical (pain, drugs, & surgery) and psychological (shame, fear, & anxiety) consequences. This study aimed to compare Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) versus Guided Imagery Therapy (GIT) on sexual anxiety in these women. METHODS: A randomized parallel clinical trial was conducted on 64 eligible women who were randomly assigned into either ERT (intervention 1 = 32) or GIT groups (intervention 2 = active c

Exploring frontal asymmetry using functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a preliminary study of the effects of social anxiety during interaction and performance tasks.

Preliminary studies examining brain function associated with social anxiety suggest the possibility of right-sided prefrontal activation associated with phobic stimulation. Although most existing neuroimaging techniques preclude participants from engaging in ecologically valid social tasks during assessment, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising new technique that permits such assessment. The present study investigated the utility of the fNIRS procedure and explored frontal asymmetry during in vivo social challenge tasks among female undergraduate students who scored in

Self-referential processing during observation of a speech performance task in social anxiety disorder from pre- to post-treatment: Evidence of disrupted neural activation.

Self-referential processing is critical to understanding social anxiety disorder (SAD). This study examined neural differences in self-referential processing in healthy controls (HC) and participants with SAD at pre- and post-treatment. Participants (n = 64) underwent fMRI scanning while viewing a video of themselves ("Self") or another person ("Other"). SAD participants were randomized to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), or waitlist, and were re-scanned at post-treatment. In SAD vs. HC, the fusiform face area (FFA) showed significantly more activation
