Expression of factor V by resident macrophages boosts host defense in the peritoneal cavity.

Macrophages resident in different organs express distinct genes, but understanding how this diversity fits into tissue-specific features is limited. Here, we show that selective expression of coagulation factor V (FV) by resident peritoneal macrophages in mice promotes bacterial clearance in the peritoneal cavity and serves to facilitate the well-known but poorly understood "macrophage disappearance reaction." Intravital imaging revealed that resident macrophages were nonadherent in peritoneal fluid during homeostasis. Bacterial entry into the peritoneum acutely induced macrophage adherence an

Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine Contraceptive Device in the Peritoneal Cavity: A Report of Two Cases.

BACKGROUND: In modern gynecology an intrauterine device (IUD) with levonorgestrel is often used as a method of contraception. The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system is small and T-shaped. In Slovenia, only a gynecologist may insert it. CASES: We present 2 clinical cases in which, despite strong evidence that no perforation had occurred during insertion, the IUD was found outside the uterus. If the IUD threads are not visible or the IUD cannot be located in the uterine cavity, an X-ray of the abdomen must be performed. If the IUD is found in the abdominal cavity outside the uterus, re

Particle size and traffic of phagocytes between the turbot peritoneal cavity and lymphoid organs.

New adjuvants based on microparticles are being developed for use in fish vaccines. The size of the microparticles may affect the immune response generated, as the adjuvant can either be retained at the site of injection or transported to lymphoid organs. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the maximum size of particles that can be exported out of the cavity, to determine the phagocytosis kinetics and to establish the routes whereby particle-containing cells move from the peritoneal cavity after injection. Fish were injected intraperitoneally with fluorescent cyclodextrins or with fl

Massive peritoneal cavity calcification in the course of advanced ovarian cancer: a case report.

Ovarian cancer usually does not give any clinical signs until it reaches a large size. This condition is often associated with the occurrence of metastases within the peritoneal cavity, pelvic and abdominal cavities. Ovarian cancer can spread by intraperitoneal implantation, by way of the lymphatic system, and also through the systemic circulation. Even when the tumor reaches a large size, the symptoms are not specific and may resemble other ailments. Therefore, ovarian cancer is detected in most cases only in the third and fourth level of advancement. Peritoneal calcification occurs in many d

Secondary tumors and tumorlike lesions of the peritoneal cavity: imaging features with pathologic correlation.

Tumors and tumorlike lesions that secondarily involve the mesothelial or submesothelial layers of the peritoneum are a diverse group of disorders that range in biologic behavior from benign to highly malignant. The anatomy of peritoneal ligaments and mesenteries and the normal circulation of peritoneal fluid dictate location and distribution of these diseases within the peritoneal cavity. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common secondary tumor to affect the peritoneal cavity. When it arises from carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract or ovary, the prognosis is grave. However, when low-g

[A retained foreign body in the peritoneal cavity causing intestinal obstruction by intraluminal migration].

BACKGROUND: Forgetting a foreign body in the abdominal cavity is an unpleasant and avoidable situation. It usually occurs when the preventive protocols are not followed precisely. In such a case clinical consequences are unpredictable and relaparotomy may become necessary. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a temporary intestinal obstruction six months after a transabdominal hysterectomy. Diagnostic workup revealed a laparotomy-gauze left in the abdominal cavity at the previous operation. Exploration showed that the gauze was actually located in the intestinal lumen. The inflammatory r

Radionuclide shuntogram demonstrating migration of distal ventriculoperitoneal shunt tubing out of the peritoneal cavity.

An 81-year-old man with a history of ventriculoperitoneal (V-P) shunt placement for symptomatic normal pressure hydrocephalus presented with recurrence of confusion and gait disturbance. Radionuclide cisternography demonstrated loculation of In-111 DTPA in the abdominal wall. A soft tissue mass palpated at the location of tracer accumulation was confirmed to be extraperitoneal pooling of fluid at the site of coiling of the distal shunt tip. After surgical revision, with repositioning of the distal tube in the peritoneal cavity, the patient's symptoms promptly improved. When symptoms of hydroce

Comparative distribution of eosinophils in bone marrow, blood and peritoneal cavity in murine schistosomiasis.

Eosinophilia in murine schistosomiasis is very intense and extensive, involving distinct compartments such as bone marrow, blood, peritoneal cavity and tissues. Comparison of the shapes of eosinophil concentration or distribution curves showed a synchronization of the tendencies around 50% between blood and bone marrow, 33 to 64% between blood and peritoneal cavity, and 33 to 43% between peritoneal cavity and bone marrow. The hepatic eosinophil granulocytopoiesis or metaplasia follows the same pattern as observed in bone marrow. Schistosoma infection can be divided into three distinct phases b

Association of the Bacteria of the Vermiform Appendix and the Peritoneal Cavity with Complicated Acute Appendicitis in Children.

BACKGROUND: Primary infection has been questioned as the pathogenetic cause of acute appendicitis. We attempted to identify the bacteria involved and to investigate if their species, types, or combinations affected the severity of acute appendicitis in children. METHODS: Samples from both the appendiceal lumen and the peritoneal cavity of 72 children who underwent appendectomy were collected to perform bacterial culture analysis. The outcomes were studied to identify if and how they were associated with the severity of the disease. Regression analysis was performed to identify any risk factor

On the track of mesothelial progenitor cells from the peritoneal cavity transplanted to immunodeficient mice.

Mesothelial progenitor cells have been reported to reside in either the monolayer of mesothelium, submesothelium or within the peritoneal cavity as free floating cells. As a putative plasticity has been reported for the mesothelial progenitor cells and considering the potential implications of the establishment of a novel resource of stem/progenitor cells in gene and cell therapeutics and tissue engineering, we conducted an in vivo tracking of transplanted mesothelial cells. In order to induce immunodeficiency, the recipient mice were treated with 32 mg kg(-1) of daily Cyclosporine. On days 14

The outcome of unretrieved gallstones in the peritoneal cavity during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder perforation during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) with spillage of bile and gallstones occurs in a substantial number of patients (up to 40%). Most surgeons believe that free intraperitoneal stones are not a justification for conversion to laparotomy even if a large number of stones are left in situ. There are, however, a number of reports demonstrating that, on occasion, these unretrieved gallstones may cause infection or abscess, inflammation, fibrosis, adhesions, cutaneous sinuses, small bowel obstruction, or generalized septicemia. The aim of this study was to de

Intra-peritoneal sRAGE treatment induces alterations in cellular distribution of CD19(+), CD3 (+) and Mac-1 (+) cells in lymphoid organs and peritoneal cavity.

Receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a pattern recognition receptor that binds a variety of pro-inflammatory ligands. Its soluble form, sRAGE, can compete for ligand binding and thereby have an anti-inflammatory effect. We have recently reported that sRAGE also exerts pro-inflammatory and chemotactic properties suggesting a dual role for sRAGE in immune modulation. Our present aim was to analyse the immunomodulatory properties of sRAGE in vivo with respect to acquired immunity. Naive mice were treated intra-peritoneally with sRAGE and cells from peritoneal lavage, spleens and
