Healthy Behavior for Preventing Cognitive Disability in Older Persons.

Sufficient levels of physical activity are fundamental for preventing cardiovascular disease, dementia, and ultimately disability in older persons, yet this protective factor is nullified when excessive hours are spent in continuous sitting. Balancing physical activity and sedentary behavior is crucial for influencing metabolic parameters and vascular patterns, both central and peripheral, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, vascular dementia, and cognitive impairment. The primary goal of geriatric medicine is to improve quality of life and prevent disability by promptly iden

Oral Myiasis Caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in a Disabled Person.

Myiasis is a parasitic disease caused by developing maggots of fly species, which can infect humans. Patients with special needs, especially those with severe neuropsychomotor limitations, may have oral manifestations of this disease. Here, we present a clinical case in which a disabled person was affected by oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Maggots were found in two ulcerated lesions, a 2 cm diameter lesion in the maxilla and a 6 cm diameter lesion in the mandible. Forty-five maggots were removed during inspection, whereas 75 maggots were surgically removed under general anesth

Physical and Environmental Accessibility of Dental Services for Persons with Disabilities in Saudi Primary Health Care: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Persons with disabilities (PWDs) may experience barriers when accessing oral health care, including those related to the physical and sensory environment of the dental-care setting. In this study we assessed the accessibility of primary health care centres (PHCs) providing dental services in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study across all 52 PHCs providing dental services in Al-Ahsa. We assessed facility-level accessibility using a structured checklist adapted from previous research and Saudi national accessibility standards.

Feasibility for Utilization of Assessment for Lack of Protective Sensation as Part of Foot Screening for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.

Background: Persons with intellectual disability have a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes than the general population. Special Olympics Fit Feet, a major screening process for evaluating foot health in persons with intellectual disability, has not included an assessment for the risk of diabetic foot ulcers thus far. A probable reason for this may be that clinicians in the past have felt that persons with intellectual disability were not capable of understanding how to complete the Semmes-Weinstein test for lack of protective sensation. A study was designed to assess whether the Speci

Weathering the storms of climate change: Preparing persons with disabilities and the physiatrists who provide their care for extreme hurricanes.

Climate-driven disasters have disproportionate and often devastating consequences on individuals with disabilities. Warming ocean and air temperatures are fueling more extreme tropical cyclones, further endangering those living in at-risk regions. Although hurricane preparedness is particularly critical for those with functional impairments and/or special medical needs, studies show such persons are less ready for disasters than the general population. This review calls attention to the time-urgent need to improve hurricane readiness among persons with disabilities. It summarizes evidence that

Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health of persons with disabilities: Insights from the 2021 Canadian Housing Survey.

Mental health (MH) remains a major public health concern in Canada and has been exacerbated by the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions on physical movement. While considerable work has been done on the impact of COVID-19 on the physical and MH of the general population, relatively less work has focused on the MH of persons with disabilities (PWDs). Although the COVID-19 containment measures including lockdowns, social distancing, quarantine, and closure of nonessential services were intended to reduce the direct risks of COVID-19, the socioeconomic

An Adaptive Mobile Health System to Support Self-Management for Persons With Chronic Conditions and Disabilities: Usability and Feasibility Studies.

BACKGROUND: Persons with chronic conditions and disabilities (PwCCDs) are vulnerable to secondary complications. Many of these secondary complications are preventable with proactive self-management and proper support. To enhance PwCCDs' self-management skills and conveniently receive desired support, we have developed a mobile health (mHealth) system called iMHere. In 2 previous clinical trials, iMHere was successfully used to improve health outcomes of adult participants with spina bifida and spinal cord injury. To further expand use of iMHere among people with various types of disabilities a

Understanding participation of persons with disabilities in clinical trial research in India-a retrospective analysis of inclusive language of protocols.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The under-representation of vulnerable groups in clinical trials, including persons with disabilities, could affect the applicability of trial findings to real-world public health interventions. We undertook this study to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities are excluded due to non-inclusionary language use in protocols from clinical trial research in India. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of fully published clinical trial protocols relevant to India (January 2017 to December 2024), sourced from national and international

Effect of Underwater Exercise on Salivary Metabolites of Older Persons With Disability.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Underwater exercise is aimed at preventing aging, maintaining, and improving motor function, and improving physical function. However, its rehabilitation effects have not been well evaluated. In order to gain insight into the molecular basis of its rehabilitation effects, possible changes in the salivary metabolites of four older persons with disability (mean age: 72.5 years) during underwater exercise were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Halitosis was measured by Breathtron; salivary bacterial number by bacterial counter; amino acids by amino acid analyzer; 8-oxoguanine
