Comparison of Alfaxalone-Midazolam, Tiletamine-Zolazepam, and KetamineAcepromazine Anesthesia during Plethysmography in Cynomolgus Macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Plethysmography is used in nonhuman primates (NHPs) to measure minute volume before aerosol exposure to an agent to calculate total time necessary in the exposure chamber. The consistency of respiratory parameters during the entire exposure time is paramount to ensuring dosing accuracy. Our study sought to validate an alfaxalone-midazolam (AM) anesthetic combination for use in aerosol studies. We hypothesized that AM would provide an adequate duration of anesthesia, achieve and maintain steady state minute volume (SSMV) for 20 min, and have anesthetic quality and side effects comparable to or

Interobserver variability in the interpretation of contrast venography, technetium-99m red blood cell venography and impedance plethysmography for deep vein thrombosis.

Contrast venography (CV) is the standard technique for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Newer noninvasive tests have also proven efficacious. However, there is a lack of data on the level of agreement among observers in their interpretation of the results of the various tests. After agreeing on well-defined criteria, three experienced observers assessed, blindly, the results of tests performed over a 4-month period on 117 patients who were suspected clinically of having had a first episode of DVT. The kappa statistic was used to measure the level of agreement beyond chance for CV (69 pat

Vasodilatory action of loop diuretics: a plethysmography study of endothelial function in forearm arteries and dorsal hand veins in hypertensive patients and controls.

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous administration of loop diuretics induces venodilation before the diuretic response. We investigated whether furosemide and torasemide exert a dilatory effect on arteries and veins mediated by endothelial release of nitric oxide. METHODS: We performed intermittent venous occlusion plethysmography to study forearm blood flow and dorsal hand-vein distension in response to furosemide and torasemide infusion in hypertensive patients and healthy controls. RESULTS: Furosemide increased venodilation from 0.56 +/- 0.09 to 0.88 +/- 0.06 (P=0.000) in control subjects and from

Noncontact respiratory monitoring during sleep: comparison of the touchless flow signal with respiratory inductance plethysmography flow (RIPflow) signal to assess respiratory events.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A nonintrusive sleep monitoring technology based on the data from a commercially available depth sensing camera has been utilized for respiratory monitoring and shown to have good performance in assessing respiratory rates across a range of rates. This noncontact or touchless, technology allows continuous respiratory monitoring without attaching probes to the patient. We have noticed a strikingly similar morphology between the noncontact flow signal (NCMflow) and the flow signal derived using the chest and abdomen respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIPflow) bands. Description of original endoscopic findings and respiratory functional assessment using barometric whole-body plethysmography in dogs suffering from brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome.

The clinical features of brachycephalic airway obstructive disease in 11 brachycephalic dogs are described in this study. The respiratory strategy was assessed before (n=11) and after (n=6) surgery using barometric whole-body plethysmography (BWBP), with the relationship between BWBP variables and the severity of the clinical signs assessed by the use of a respiratory score based on clinical, radiographic and endoscopic findings. Partial collapse of the left main bronchus was a common finding not previously described as part of the brachycephalic airway obstructive disease syndrome. Epiglottic

Simultaneous measurement of instantaneous heart rate and chest wall plethysmography in short-term, metronome guided heart rate variability studies: suitability for assessment of autonomic dysfunction.

Instantaneous heart rate and chest wall motion were measured using a 3-lead ECG and an air pressure chest wall plethysmography system. Chest wall plethysmography traces were found to accurately represent the breathing pattern as measured by spirometry (average correlation coefficient 0.944); though no attempt was made to calibrate plethysmography voltage output to tidal volume. Simultaneous measurements of heart rate and chest wall motion were made for short periods under metronome guided breathing at 6 breaths per minute. The average peak to trough heart rate change per breath cycle (AVEMAX)

Tissue Perfusion and Fluid Responsiveness Assessment in Critically Ill Patients. A Feasibility Pilot Study Using the Ikorus Urothelial Plethysmography Device (The Target-Up Study).

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of tissue perfusion is challenging. Commonly used markers like lactate levels and central venous oxygen saturation are indirect, intermittent, and provide a global picture of circulatory status which may not reflect perfusion at the organ level. The Urethral Perfusion Index (UPi), measured through a specialized urinary catheter, is a novel technique that offers continuous, real-time monitoring of perfusion in a central tissue bed, potentially providing more immediate and targeted clinical information. OBJECTIVES: 1. The aims of the study were (1) to assess the

Insights Into Acute and Delayed Cisplatin-Induced Emesis From a Microelectrode Array, Radiotelemetry and Whole-Body Plethysmography Study of Suncus murinus (House Musk Shrew).

Purpose: Cancer patients receiving cisplatin therapy often experience side-effects such as nausea and emesis, but current anti-emetic regimens are suboptimal. Thus, to enable the development of efficacious anti-emetic treatments, the mechanisms of cisplatin-induced emesis must be determined. We therefore investigated these mechanisms in Suncus murinus, an insectivore that is capable of vomiting. Methods: We used a microelectrode array system to examine the effect of cisplatin on the spatiotemporal properties of slow waves in stomach antrum, duodenum, ileum and colon tissues isolated from S. mu

A comparison between bioelectrical impedance analysis and air-displacement plethysmography in assessing fat-free mass in patients with motor neurone diseases: a cross-sectional study.

AIM: To determine the validity of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in quantifying fat-free mass (FFM) compared to air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) in patients with a motor neurone disease (MND). METHODS: FFM of 140 patients diagnosed with MND was determined by ADP using the BodPod (i.e. the gold standard), and by BIA using the whole-body Bodystat. FFM values were translated to predicted resting energy expenditure (REE); the actual REE was measured using indirect calorimetry, resulting in a metabolic index. Validity of the BIA compared to the ADP was assessed using Bland-Altman ana

Body composition and growth in full-term small for gestational age and large for gestational age Swedish infants assessed with air displacement plethysmography at birth and at 3-4 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) or large for gestational age (LGA) has short and long term metabolic consequences. There is a growing interest in the extent to which body composition, both in the short and the long term, differs in infants born at the extremes of these birth weights. METHODS: Body composition in 25 SGA and 25 LGA infants were assessed during the first days of life and at 3-4 months of age using air displacement plethysmography. RESULTS: SGA infants had significantly lower body fat (%) at birth compared to LGA infants. SGA infants increased their body w
