Migration and colonization of the oesophagus by Leishmania mexicana parasites were enhanced after digestion of a second bloodmeal intake in Lutzomyia evansi. This event has epidemiological significance since it affects the infection susceptibility of this sand fly species, which is a proven vector of L. chagasi in Colombian and Venezuelan visceral leishmaniasis foci. Also, it may explain the host seeking behaviour displayed by some partially bloodfed flies found inside houses.

The mouthparts of both males and females of Lutzomyia migonei França were compared by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM), and their structures are herein described. Mandibles are present in both sexes but in males they are reduced and, in contrast to females, no teeth were observed. As in females, the laciniae in males are highly sclerotized, but the number of lateral teeth are reduced and retrorse teeth are absent. Only females possess teeth at the tip of the hypopharynx, whereas in males they are substituted by spicula. Except for the length from the junction with t

Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are major endemic diseases in northeast Brazil. The objective of the current study was to determine the species and geographic distribution of potential sand fly vectors of Leishmania in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Sand flies were captured using CDC light traps in 30 municipalities distributed throughout the 8 geographic zones of the state. Twelve Lutzomyia species were identified. Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva was the most prevalent and accounted for 85.59% of the sand fly captured. The remaining species were distributed as follows: L. evandroi

The phlebotomine sand fly, Lutzomyia longipalpis, is the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the New World. Variability in its tergal spot morphology has led to conflicting interpretations of the species status of the various forms. An L. longipalpis field population from eastern Brazil was found with three co-occurring morphological variations--1-spot, 2-spot, and an intermediate form. Genetic profiles were established for each form. Fifteen isoenzyme loci provided the data matrix for comparison of genetic variation among the forms. Spot patterns and isoenzyme frequencies fit Hardy-Weinberg e

Sandflies attracted by human bait were caught in an endemic focus of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in the state of Campeche, Mexico. Catches were carried out monthly from February 1994 to January 1995 between 18:00 and 22:00 h. Lutzomyia cruciata was the only species caught. The highest population peak of Lu. cruciata was found in March with lesser peaks in February, December 1994, and January 1995. Maximum biting rate of Lu. cruciata was found between 18:00 and 19:00 h. The host-seeking females of Lu. cruciata were directly related to levels of humidity between 88 and 100%. Low and high t

Effects of permethrin-treated screens on the sand fly, Phlebotomus martini Parrot, a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya, were evaluated after the eighth treatment. Screens treated with 0.50 g/m2 of permethrin 20% emulsifiable concentrate were fitted inside houses and re-treated every 6 mo from August 1989 to December 1993. Before application of the treated screens, a geometric mean of 0.83 P. martini were collected per trap night inside houses, whereas after the eighth treatment only 0.05 sand flies were caught. P. martini abundance was reduced by 88.8%. Analysis of the effects of treat

Nocturnal activity of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) was studied from August 1991 to July 1992 in a small rural community in Colombia where American visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. During 2 or 3 nights each month, sand flies were collected with hand-held aspirators each hour between 1730 and 0630 hours, from a pigpen and a cattle corral located 30 m apart. Host-seeking activity of L. longipalpis adults was characterized by 2 general patterns: (1) adult sand fly activity increased shortly after sunset and continued until just after sunrise, and (2) peak sand fly activity w

An attempt was made to control phlebotomine sand flies biting indoors in a rural community near Cali, Colombia, using the residual insecticide "K-Othrine" (deltamethrin) sprayed on the inside walls of houses. Twelve houses were divided into matched pairs based on physical characteristics, one house in each pair being left untreated while the inside walls of the other were sprayed with 1% deltamethrin at a concentration of 500 mg a.i./m2. Sand flies were sampled each week using protected human bait and sticky trap collections for four months after spraying. The number of sand flies (Lutzomyia y

The Phlebotomine sandfly fauna of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in South India is described. Two morphologically different forms of Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of Indian visceral leishmaniasis, are reported from Madras, a known focus of visceral leishmaniasis. A new species, Sergentomyia shettyi sp. nov., is described and Sergentomyia babu and Sergentomyia insularis stat. nov. are considered distinct species on the basis of their parapatric distribution. Phlebotomus papatasi and P. argentipes were the most abundant species around houses (37% and 29% of the catch, respectively), based on 1

Mark-release-recapture studies were carried out during 1990-1991 in El Callejón, Colombia, an endemic focus of American visceral leishmaniasis, to study the longevity, dispersal, and flight range of the principal vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva. Several groups of wild-caught (n = 1,539) and laboratory-reared F1 (n = 2,208) sand flies were marked with fluorescent dusts and released. Recaptures at daytime resting sites, on animal bait, and in CDC light traps were made for 20 d following each release. From 2 to 9% of L. longipalpis were recaptured, a rate which differed between the sex

The phlebotomine sandflyLutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva, the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in South America, has recently been shown to produce an oviposition semiochemical. In the present study it was found that a nonpolar extract of eggs was attractive and/or stimulatory to ovipositing females. A Chromatographic investigation indicated the presence of similar compounds in accessory glands and egg extracts. Extract of accessory gland was also found to elicit a positive oviposition response. It is concluded that the pheromone is produced in the accessory glands and is secreted onto the

In Colombia, sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are recognized as primary vectors of Leishmania spp. However, there are reports of infections caused by unidentified trypanosomatid parasites in sand flies circulating within leishmaniasis-endemic areas (2017 to 2018). This study aimed to identify trypanosomatid parasites other than Leishmania spp. infecting sand flies in a visceral leishmaniasis focus in northern Colombia. Between March 2017 and March 2018, sand flies were actively collected from tree bases and cavities and subsequently dissected for taxonomic identification and the detection of

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis of major public health importance. In urban areas, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the primary vector of Leishmania (L.) infantum. This study assessed the seasonality, spatiotemporal distribution, and climatic factors associated with L. longipalpis abundance in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, and detected Leishmania spp. DNA in captured females. Monthly collections were conducted from March 2023 to February 2024 in 72 households across eight urban areas using CDC-type light traps placed indoors and in peridomestic environments. A total of 1641 specimens (1516 mal

Phlebotomus tobbi is a widely distributed sand fly species in Turkey and is the proven vector of Leishmania infantum and several Phleboviruses. Information regarding the genetic basis of phenotypic plasticity is crucial for managing vector-borne diseases, as the changing environmental conditions have consequences for the survival of arthropods and the disease agents they transmit. However, limited data is available on the impacts of environmental conditions on the traits associated with sand fly survival, reproduction, and vectorial competence. The present study aimed to reveal the changes in

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are known as vectors of various pathogens such as Leishmania sp parasite and Toscana virus (TOSV). Leishmaniasis is endemic in Morocco, and TOSV is increasingly reported. Our objective is to analyze the specific composition of the natural population of sand flies in endemic and non endemic area of leishmaniasis in Morocco, thus evaluated their infection by Toscana virus.
METHODS: Sand flies were collected by CDC miniature light traps from seven different localities with an altitude range from 399 m to 1496 m. Synanthropic index was calculated for each sand

Studies of the geographic distribution of sand flies and the factors associated with their occurrence are necessary to understand the risk of leishmaniasis transmission. The objective of this study was to characterize the sand fly fauna, particularly the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), and correlate these with climate factors in the Dourados municipality, Brazil. The collection of sand flies was carried out with CDC Light Traps over two periods: at six sites for three consecutive nights each month from August 2012 to July 2013; and at four other sites for two cons

The sand fly Lutzomyia (L.) longipalpis has been implicated as the primary vector of Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis VL. In addition, it has been associated with atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission in the Neotropic and Central America, respectively. The existence of a L. longipalpis complex species has been suggested with important implications for leishmaniasis epidemiology; however, the delimitation of species conforming it remains a topic of controversy. The DNA Barcoding Initiative based on cox1 sequence variation was used to identify the MOTUs

Mexico has great diversity of phlebotomine sand flies related to cases of leishmaniasis, yet few studies have dressed the molecular taxonomy of these sand fly species. The use of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene, as a DNA Barcode has facilitated the molecular identification of sand flies species worldwide. We use the DNA barcode as a useful tool for the identification of phlebotomine sand flies of the natural reserve Los Tuxtlas from Veracruz, México. A fragment of 536 bp of the COI gene was obtained from 36 individuals belonging to eight species of five genera (Dampfomyia, Lutzomyi

The epidemiology of leishmaniasis is related with habitat and behavior of the sand fly vector. Each species of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) has a specific characteristic of their sites for the development of their immatures. Information on natural breeding sites of phlebotomine sand flies is limited, due to the difficulty of isolation of immature from the soil. This study, realized from May 2014 to September 2014, aimed to determine the effect of properties of soil on behavior and abundance of sand flies in breeding habitat in Aichoun locality. Sand flies were collected using sticky paper

Phlebotomine sand flies are blood-feeding insects that transmit Leishmania parasites that cause various forms of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis and sand fly fever viruses (Phlebovirus; Bunyaviridae) in humans. Sand flies pose a significant threat to US military personnel deployed to Leishmania-endemic and sand fly fever endemic regions which include Europe, the Mediterranean basin, Middle East, Central Asia, Southwest Asia, and Africa. A research project supported by the Department of Defense Deployed Warfighter Protection Program was initiated to evaluate the susceptibility of 2 Old Wor
