Calibration and simulation of a silicon dosemeter for ambient dose equivalent in low-earth orbit space.

A particle dosemeter (PD) is a payload of NEXTSat-2 in the low-earth orbit (LEO). The absorbed dose in LEO needs to be converted into the ambient dose equivalent (H*(10)). Due to a mixed field in LEO, the calibration factors (klow and khigh) should be determined for the low-and high-linear energy transfers (LET) (below and above 1.5 keV/μm), respectively. The PD was irradiated with a 137Cs source at the Korea Radiation Solution facility to obtain H*(10) and absorbed doses. However due to the lack of sources for the high-LET calibration, H*(10) and an absorbed dose were calculated by simulating

A nine-year evaluation of emergency department personnel exposure to ionizing radiation.

Emergency department personnel experience potential occupational hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation (x-rays). To assess this risk, ionizing radiation exposure was analyzed during a nine-year period for 128 ED personnel. The group consisted of 21 physicians, 92 nurses, and 15 ancillary personnel. Exposure was measured for both penetrating and nonpenetrating radiation using standard film dosimeter badges. Film badge use compliance was 66.7% for physicians, 86.2% for nurses, and 86.7% for ancillary personnel. Penetrating radiation exposure averaged 0.12 mrem/month for physicians, 0.70 mr

Spatial distribution of bremsstrahlung in a dual electron beam used in total skin electron treatments: errors due to ionization chamber cable irradiation.

The spatial distribution of the bremsstrahlung dose in total skin electron therapy and large electron fields has been assumed to be symmetric along the match line; however, the measured data in the entire plane have not been available. Das et al. ["Spatial distribution of bremsstrahlung in total skin electron irradiation," Med. Phys. 19, 810 (1992)] reported the ion-chamber measured bremsstrahlung data in the Stanford six-field technique and found that the bremsstrahlung dose profile was 2.5 times greater in the caudal plane (beam facing toward floor) as compared to the cephalic plane. This ob

The risk of radiation-induced carcinogenesis after external beam radiotherapy of Graves' orbitopathy.

PURPOSE: In order to estimate the risk of radiation-induced carcinogenesis after external beam radiotherapy of Graves' orbitopathy, we made dosimetric measurements with thermoluminescent dosimeters in a male Rando phantom using our treatment technique. METHODS: We produced dose-volume histograms from 5-mm CT slices using our treatment planning system. In this way we estimated the irradiation dose received by the main surrounding organs such as the brain, the bone and the eyeball. We use 6-MV X-ray for the treatment of Graves' orbitopathy and our total dose is 2,000 cGy, 200 cGy per fraction.

[Gonadal load in the radiotherapy of benign diseases. I. Degenerative joint diseases].

The gonadal load was measured during radiation therapy of humeroscapular periarthritis, coxarthrosis, diseases of the vertebral column and of the sacro-iliac joint (disease Bechterew) for different irradiation techniques. All measurements have been performed by LiF dosimeters and with an Alderson phantom using 250 kV X-radiation. The gonadal dose with respect to the surface dose was in the range of tenths of one per mill in case of humeroscapular periarthritis and reached values up to about 30 per cent in coxarthrosis and Bechterew disease. Measurements during irradiation of the vertebral colu

Occupational x-ray exposure of anaesthetists.

Lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeter chips were used to measure the radiation dose received by anaesthetists caused by the use of image intensification during a typical 4-week period in an orthopaedic theatre. These were used to estimate an annual dose, for comparison with dose limits, to ascertain if anaesthetists should be included in personnel monitoring services. Doses proved to be below detectable limits; hence anaesthetists are at minimal risk from occupational exposure to radiation. The orthopaedic theatre is believed to use more x-rays than other theatres, so exposure elsewhere

Estimating head and neck tissue dose from x-ray scatter to physicians performing x-ray guided cardiovascular procedures: a phantom study.

Physicians performing x-ray guided interventional procedures have a keen interest in radiation safety. Radiation dose to tissues and organs of the head and neck are of particular interest because they are not routinely protected by wearable radiation safety devices. This study was conducted to facilitate estimation of radiation dose to tissues of the head and neck of interventional physicians based on the dose recorded by a personal dosimeter worn on the left collar. Scatter beam qualities maximum energy and HVL were measured for 40 scatter beams emitting from an anthropomorphic patient phanto

Unexpected dose to the daughter of a patient treated with iodine-131 for hyperthyroidism.

Patients treated with radioiodine for thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism are a source of radiation exposure and represent a potential radiation hazard for the people in their environment. Doses to the relatives can be estimated from dose rates of the patient or measured with a proper dosimeter. Sensitive thermoluminescent dosimeters have been used to measure the doses absorbed by the family members of patients treated with iodine-131 ((131)I) for thyrotoxicosis. In the present case, a 12 year old daughter of a female patient, aged 41 years, treated with 592 MBq of (131)I, received a dose of 7.

Estimation of radiation dose to the paediatric cardiac patient in a paediatric cardiac catheterisation laboratory: concerns and ways ahead.

PURPOSE: Children with CHDs are exposed to ionising radiation during diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures. Data regarding radiation doses a child is exposed to during these procedures are scarce. We aimed to investigate the radiation dose and other related parameters for paediatric cardiac catheterisation and propose these as local reference levels. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We collected radiation exposure data for all diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation cases (excluding electrophysiology procedures) utilising fluoroscopy at "Anonymized for review" b

Measurement of Occupational Eye and Thyroid Radiation Doses in Pediatric Interventional Cardiologists at a Tertiary Hospital.

Background Advances in imaging techniques have led to increased utilization of imaging devices in catheterization laboratories. Invasive surgical procedures for cardiac disorders have been largely replaced by fluoroscopic cardiac catheterization. With this increase, concerns and risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation among interventional cardiologists are growing. This study aims to measure and compare the occupational doses to the eye lens and thyroid of pediatric interventional cardiologists during different procedures in the catheterization laboratory and its significance. Safety considerations during transapical aortic valve implantation.

OBJECTIVES: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a new method for the treatment of very high-risk patients with aortic valve stenosis. The radiation dose to which the patient and each member of the heart team are exposed during this new fluoroscopically guided intervention is unknown. METHODS: Between April 2008 and August 2013, 1177 consecutive patients underwent transapical TAVI (TA-TAVI). In 22 consecutive patients undergoing TA-TAVI, the radiation doses to the cardiothoracic surgeon, cardiologist, anaesthesiologist (performing echocardiography examination), surgical assistant

Exposure of the surgeon to radiation during surgery.

Exposure to radiation over many years increases the incidence of cataracts and promotes the development of carcinoma of the thyroid gland. A prospective study of 24 operative procedures involving minimal invasive techniques and fluoroscopic guidance was undertaken in order to measure the radiation exposure to the primary surgeon. The study was conducted during 8 K-wire osteosyntheses in fractures of the distal radius, 8 closed interlocking intramedullary nailings in fractures of the femur and 8 internal fixator procedures, with or without posterior autogenic transpedicular bone grafting, in fr

Genotoxicity Associated with 131I and 99mTc Exposure in Nuclear Medicine Staff: A Physical and Biological Monitoring Study.

Nuclear medicine staff are constantly exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation. This study investigated the level of genotoxic effects in hospital employees exposed to routinely used 131I and 99mTc in comparison with a control group. The study compared the results of physical and biological monitoring in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The effects of confounding factors, such as smoking status and physical activity, were also considered. Physical dosimetry monitoring revealed differences in the individual annual effective dose as measured by finger ring dosimeter and whole-body dosimeter betwe

A new practical model of testes shield: the effectiveness during abdominopelvic computed tomography.

The goal of our prospective study was to measure the effect of a new standard model male gonad shield on the testicular radiation exposure during routine abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT). Two hundred male patients who underwent upper abdominal and pelvic CT examinations were included in our study. To prepare the testes shield (TS), 2 No. 8 fluoroscopy radiation-protection gloves made of bismuth (0.35 mm lead equivalent) were used. These gloves were invaginated into one another and their fingers were turned inside out. Scrotums of all patients were pushed into these lead-containing glove

Evaluation of scrotal and testicular radiation doses for heterotopic ossification prophylaxis.

The majority of patients with heterotopic ossification are males with traumatic injuries in the hip/femur region. The testes, given their proximity, are exposed to scatter radiation, which has the potential to alter sperm count and morphology. In a prospective study, patients were treated with an 800-cGy dose of radiation without direct exposure of the testes/scrotum but with a testicular shield. Thermoluminescent dosimeters were placed inside and outside the shield. Mean dose inside and outside the shield was 10.2 and 20.2 cGy, respectively (sperm abnormalities have been reported with 15 cGy)

Real-time quantitation of thyroidal radioiodine uptake in thyroid disease with monitoring by a collar detection device.

Radioactive iodine (RAI) is safe and effective in most patients with hyperthyroidism but not all individuals are cured by the first dose, and most develop post-RAI hypothyroidism. Postoperative RAI therapy for remnant ablation is successful in 80-90% of thyroid cancer patients and sometimes induces remission of nonresectable cervical and/or distant metastatic disease but the effective tumor dose is usually not precisely known and must be moderated to avoid short- and long-term adverse effects on other tissues. Radiation exposure from diagnostic imaging in severely injured trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Trauma patients often require multiple imaging tests, including computed tomography (CT) scans. CT scanning, however, is associated with high-radiation doses. The purpose of this study was to measure the radiation doses trauma patients receive from diagnostic imaging. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from June 1, 2004 to March 31, 2005 at a Level I trauma center in Toronto, Canada. All trauma patients who arrived directly from the scene of injury and who survived to discharge were included. Three dosimeters were placed on each patient (neck, chest, and groin) befo
