Rest Evaluation for Active Concussion Treatment (ReAct) Protocol: a prospective cohort study of levels of physical and cognitive rest after youth sports-related concussion.

INTRODUCTION: Although current guidelines for the early clinical management of sports-related concussion (SRC) call for a gradual return-to-activity, the optimal level of rest needed to promote recovery remains unknown. This paper describes the protocol of the Rest Evaluation for Active Concussion Treatment (ReAct) study which objectively measures physical and cognitive rest following SRC and its relation to recovery among youth athletes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Youth athletes aged 11-17 years are recruited preinjury and enrolled within 72 hours following a physician-diagnosed concussion. Injur

Serial thallium-201 imaging at rest in patients with unstable and stable angina pectoris: relationship of myocardial perfusion at rest to presenting clinical syndrome.

In order to determine whether there are differences in myocardial perfusion at rest among patients with various unstable and stable angina syndromes, serial thallium-201 imaging was performed at rest in 19 patients presenting with rapidly worsening exertional angina (unstable angina, group A), 12 patients with rest angina alone without exertional symptoms (unstable angina, group B), and 34 patients with chronic stable angina. No patient had an episode of angina within 4 hours of study. Nineteen of 19 (100%) patients in group A demonstrated transient defects compared to only 3 of 12 (25%) patie

Importance of resting heart rate.

Resting heart rate is a determinant of cardiac output and physiological homeostasis. Although a simple, but critical, parameter, this vital sign predicts adverse outcomes, including mortality, and development of diseases in otherwise normal and healthy individuals. Temporal changes in heart rate can have valuable predictive capabilities. Heart rate can reflect disease severity in patients with various medical conditions. While heart rate represents a compilation of physiological inputs, including sympathetic and parasympathetic tone, aside from the underlying intrinsic sinus rate, how resting

A DCM for resting state fMRI.

This technical note introduces a dynamic causal model (DCM) for resting state fMRI time series based upon observed functional connectivity--as measured by the cross spectra among different brain regions. This DCM is based upon a deterministic model that generates predicted crossed spectra from a biophysically plausible model of coupled neuronal fluctuations in a distributed neuronal network or graph. Effectively, the resulting scheme finds the best effective connectivity among hidden neuronal states that explains the observed functional connectivity among haemodynamic responses. This is becaus

Glycerol hyperhydration in resting horses.

To determine whether administration of glycerol-containing solutions induces a state of transient hyperhydration in resting euhydrated horses, changes in plasma and urine constituents were measured in four horses for 1 h before and 5 h after nasogastric administration of each of four treatments (Experiment 1). Treatments were applied in a randomized fashion and included: (1) 1.0 g.kg(-)(1)glycerol in 8 L of water (G); (2) 8 L of water (W); (3) 8 L of 0.9% NaCl solution (S); and (4) 1.0 g.kg(-)(1)glycerol in 8 L of 0.9% NaCl solution (GS). In a subsequent study, voluntary water intake was measu

Social mind at rest: resting-state connectivity associated with social thought relates to friendship quality.

Although mind wandering is often associated with adverse outcomes, certain thought content may support adaptive functions. This study investigated how latent dimensions of resting-state thought relate to adaptive functioning, mental, emotional, and behavioral problems, and resting-state connectivity patterns in 130 healthy adults. Exploratory factor analysis of the New York Cognition Questionnaire identified seven thought dimensions: five content-related factors (Social Cognition, Self-Oriented Reflection, Interpersonal Reflection, Near-Term Past/Future, and Positive & Meaningful) and two form

Residual nephrogenic rests affect the long-term prognosis of Wilms tumor with bilateral nephrogenic rests.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The progression of nephrogenic rests (NRs) can lead to the development of Wilms tumor (WT). The aim is to explore the factors affecting the poor prognosis associated with WT combined with bilateral NRs. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with WT combined bilateral NRs admitted to our center from January 2008 to December 2022. The enrolled patients were divided into two groups according to whether they had residual NRs at the end of standard therapy or not. RESULTS: 57 patients were finally enrolled in this study, of which 23 patients wer

Resting heart rate, temporal changes in resting heart rate, and overall and cause-specific mortality.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies investigating the association between resting heart rate (RHR) and mortality have focused on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and measured RHR at only one time point. We aimed to assess associations of RHR and changes in RHR over approximately a decade with overall and cause-specific mortality. METHODS: We used data from participants in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study with RHR measures at baseline (1990-1994; n=41 386; 9846 deaths) and at follow-up (2003-2007; n=21 692; 2818 deaths). RHR measures were taken by trained staff, using Dinamap monitors. Cox

Bridging personality, time poverty, and rest intolerance: a network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rest intolerance-the inability to rest without experiencing negative emotions or cognitive distress-is an emerging psychological phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the complex interplay among personality traits, state anxiety, perceived time poverty, and rest intolerance. METHODS: Using a sample of 541 college students, we constructed a 13-node regularized partial correlation network at the dimension level, excluding one unreliable subscale. RESULTS: Results revealed that Neuroticism, Time Pressure, and Negative Feelings emerged as the central nodes within their respective

Expanding Cystic Fibrosis Registries to the Rest of the World.

CHALLENGE: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a global challenge. The epidemiological knowledge is incomplete and focused on patient registries in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, and South Africa. To complete the global picture of CF, we have to learn from each individual with CF, as well as each cohort and population. SOLUTION: Structured, harmonized, quality-controlled, and sustainable patient registries are needed worldwide to complete this picture and give every person with CF the opportunity to be part of it. REQUIREMENTS: Commitment, trust, transparency, and

Impact of Bowel Rest on Hospitalized Patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Bowel rest has traditionally been practiced for hospitalized patients with severe ulcerative colitis (UC). Most available evidence for bowel rest in UC originates from the prebiologic era. Therefore, this study evaluated the clinical impact of bowel rest in hospitalized patients with UC under modern therapy. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed at a single tertiary hospital, where a change in institutional policy for hospitalized UC patients replaced essential bowel rest with early oral feeding in October 2019. Hospitalized UC patients were classified according to the ti

From illness to rest: neural circuits linking sickness and sleep.

In a recent study, Darmohray et al. identified a brainstem pathway underlying sickness-induced sleep in mice. The authors demonstrated that immune-activated circuits in the nucleus of the solitary tract suppress wake-promoting norepinephrine signaling to promote nonrapid eye movement sleep. These findings help elucidate the neural mechanisms of sickness-induced sleep and provide new insights into sleep-immune interactions.

Sleep and Cytokines: A Bidirectional Dialogue Involving Rest and Immunity.

Sleep is a cardinal biological process that backstops central nervous system function, which also plays a crucial role in regulating systemic homeostasis, including immune activities. Cytokines, particularly interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, act as mediators bridging sleep and inflammation, also influencing both sleep architecture and sleep-wake cycle. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, hypersomnia, or obstructive sleep apnoea may disrupt cytokine production, alter their circadian rhythm of release, and shift secretion peaks from night to day. These c

Beyond the Grind: "Rest is Resistance" in Health Professions Education.

Rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, Afrofuturism, and feminism, Hersey's "Rest is Resistance" framework encourages deliberate rest practices as a personal necessity and a form of political resistance. Inspired by her work, we are a group of health professions education scholars from minoritized backgrounds using our lived experiences to illustrate the application of our "Rest is Resistance" framework. The demands of academic medicine, defined by productivity in clinical, scholarly, and educational domains, combined with personal obligations, run counter to rest. Enduri

Transcription factors Lef1 and Rest stimulate recovery from depressive states.

The depressive state, a hallmark of major depressive disorder (MDD) and frequently observed alongside various neurological diseases, is often characterized by the dysregulation of multiple genes, reflecting a complex and multifaceted pathology underlying its symptoms. To gain deeper insights into the role of transcription factors (TFs) in mediating depressive states, we performed a detailed analysis of transcription factor activity profiles (TFAPs) in mouse brains, employing a TF-activity reporter battery that enables evaluation of transcriptional activities of multiple TFs and endogenous gene

A systematic review of flotation-restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST).

BACKGROUND: Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) is a therapeutic technique that involves immersing an individual in an environment with minimal sensory input or stimulation. The goal of REST is to induce a state of relaxation that is deeper than what can be achieved through other forms of relaxation techniques. Research suggests that REST can help reduce anxiety, alleviate chronic pain, improve sleep, and enhance creativity and cognitive function. Flotation-REST is a popular type of REST that utilizes an enclosed tank filled with buoyant saltwater to facilitate relaxation. This

Reduced dorsal fronto-striatal connectivity at rest in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric illness that remains difficult to treat. Elucidating the neural mechanisms of AN is necessary to identify novel treatment targets and improve outcomes. A growing body of literature points to a role for dorsal fronto-striatal circuitry in the pathophysiology of AN, with increasing evidence of abnormal task-based fMRI activation within this network among patients with AN. Whether these abnormalities are present at rest and reflect fundamental differences in brain organization is unclear. METHODS: The current study combined resting-state
