Ophthalmic surgery, lasers & imaging : the official journal of the International Society for Imaging in the Eye2010eng
An unusual case of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) occurring in the setting of a chronic retinal detachment was reported. A 47-year old woman with a history of slowly declining peripheral vision in her left eye presented with acute painless hand motion vision. She had an extensive chronic retinal detachment in the left eye with multiple demarcation lines and marked whitening of the fovea. Her right eye was normal. A CRAO was confirmed with fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography testing. An exhaustive work-up was negative and there was no history of antecedent trauma.

Retinal angiomatous masses were observed as a very late complication in four patients following scleral buckling procedures with drainage of subretinal fluid. The lesions manifested 5-19 years after the original surgical procedure, and the presenting complaint was decreased vision secondary to vitreous clouding. In three patients a vascularized retinal mass greater than 3 disc diameters in size was observed at the site of choroidal perforation for drainage of subretinal fluid. A fourth patient demonstrated a similar lesion in the location of a suture used to anchor the encircling element, poss

INTRODUCTION AND PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Pediatric rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) presents unique challenges in diagnosis and management. A thorough evaluation of family, medical, and ocular history is helpful, as systemic and genetic conditions can predispose children to RRD. Trauma, high myopia, and history of prematurity are also common risk factors. Examining young children in the outpatient setting may have limitations, but the yield can be maximized by modifying examination techniques and utilizing imaging technologies. In this manscript, the considerations for diagnosis and manageme

Serous retinal detachment is a rare complication of pregnancy. A 30-year-old primigravida with preeclampsia presented with bilateral blurring of vision and metamorphopsia for a one-week duration. She was referred by the Obstetrics and Gynecology department for visual assessment. Her best corrected visual acuity was 6/7.5 in both eyes. Fundus examination revealed bilateral serous retinal detachment involving maculae. She was treated conservatively and her blood pressure normalized after delivery. There was a partial resolution of subretinal fluid one-month post-delivery and a complete resolutio

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is an autosomal-dominant connective-tissue disorder with vascular and musculoskeletal abnormalities similar to Marfan syndrome. However, unlike Marfan, retinal detachment (RD) is rarely reported, and screening protocols do not currently feature ophthalmic assessment or RD counseling. We report a 5-generation family affected by LDS, where RD occurred in six eyes of four individuals. The proband was an 84-year-old male recently diagnosed with type-V LDS (TGFβ3 pathogenic variant c.899G>A, p.(Arg300Gln)). Further investigation was undertaken into the family's medical hi

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is an ophthalmic emergency, which usually requires prompt surgery to prevent further detachment and restore sensory function. Although several individual factors have been suggested, a systems level understanding of molecular pathomechanisms underlying this severe eye disorder is lacking. To address this gap in knowledge we performed the molecular level systems pathology analysis of the vitreous from 127 patients with RRD using state-of-the art quantitative mass spectrometry to identify the individual key proteins, as well as the biochemical pathways con

The ocular features of Goldenhar syndrome (GS) are typically external, like surface dermoids and lid coloboma. Retinal detachment (RD) is rare and has not been reported in absence of other concomitant predisposing congenital ocular disorders. We present a unique case of bilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with GS. To the best of our knowledge, this association of GS with RRD is novel and has not been reported earlier in ophthalmic and systemic literature on RRD.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is the separation of the sensory retina from the pigment epithelium (RPE). RRD is caused by a retinal tear in the periphery and the vitreoretinal (VR) traction, which allows access of the vitreous fluid to the subretinal space. Treatment of symptomatic retinal detachment is currently surgical only. Surgical options are intraocular and extraocular. This is the retrospective evaluation of the group of 17 eyes of 17 patients with RRD, which were operated by scleral buckling. Patients were 9 men and 8 women, age range 19-61 (median 46) years. The observation

This article reviews the cause and treatment options for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)-related tractional detachment and detachments in ROP residuals during childhood and early adulthood. Retinal vascularisation is incomplete after premature birth. Phase I of ROP consists of a delayed retinal vascular growth and vessel loss after premature birth resulting in hypoxia, phase II results in hypoxia-induced vascular proliferation and as a consequence to vitreoretinal traction. The anatomic and functional outcome of tractional detachment in ROP is determined by the previous treatment (e.g., laser

A range of posterior segment abnormalities, especially anomalies of the optic papilla, coloboma, and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous are associated with the high risk to develop a retinal detachment. Most of these retinal detachments develop in the first and second decade of life. In most cases of retinal detachment caused by malformations, vitreoretinal surgery is indicated. Results of surgery depend on the nature of malformations. In spite of an anatomic re-attachment of the retina, in some eyes the functional results are limited. Especially in cases of severe PHPV, the aim of vitre

PURPOSE: To characterize the development of retinal detachment (RD) after open globe trauma.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 892 patients comprising 893 open globe injuries (OGIs), of whom 255 were ultimately diagnosed with RD, with the remaining eyes serving as controls.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with OGIs presenting to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary between 1999 and 2011. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate the time to detachment, and multivariable logistic regression was used to define the clinical factors associated with RD afte

The authors describe a 3-month-old female infant with infantile rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with no associated congenital or developmental abnormalities. The unique presentation of this patient indicates that the detachment was a result of an early developmental defect.

This report describes a 3-year-old Chinese-Italian boy with Joubert syndrome. Fundus examination showed bilateral optic disc coloboma. Left serous retinal detachment was also found. This ocular finding was not reported in the previous literature. Although Joubert syndrome has many variable phenotypes and the molecular basis is still unknown, the newly reported ocular features suggest that a different genetic form may be present.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of a retinal fold after vitrectomy for retinal reattachment is not often described. In this case report, its treatment, prevention, and mechanism are discussed.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old pseudophakic woman experienced a superotemporal retinal detachment with macula-on and numerous retinal tears. The treatment consisted of a vitrectomy, perfluorocarbon injection, cryotherapy, and a complete fluid/gas exchange. Postoperative examination disclosed a retinal fold centered by the fovea. The treatment of this macular fold included the creation of a new detachment of th
