Influence of retirement on leisure-time physical activity: the atherosclerosis risk in communities study.

Cross-sectional data suggest that leisure-time physical activity may increase during retirement. Prospective population-based studies are necessary to characterize leisure activity patterns through retirement among the same persons to verify this observation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the influence of retirement on leisure activity using data from Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study cohort participants aged 45-64 years at baseline. Physical activity was measured by the Baecke questionnaire in 1,825 African-American and 5,957 White participants who were working

Risk of malnutrition in retirement homes elderly persons measured by the "mini-nutritional assessment".

BACKGROUND: The combined influence of age-associated factors such as general health, degree of dependency, diminished odor perception, and poor oral health on the risk for malnutrition was explored. METHODS: A total of 81 persons living in retirement homes took part in the study (mean age 83.4 years, SD = 6.6, range 61-98). The Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to evaluate the risk of malnutrition. Odor perception was measured by the detection threshold for isoamylacetate. The number of drugs taken by each person was counted. General health status was determined by the Medical Outcom

Outbreaks of gastroenteritis in elderly nursing homes and retirement facilities associated with human caliciviruses.

Eleven outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis, eight of which were in nursing homes or retirement facilities, were reported in virginia during the winter of 1993-1994. Serum samples (four outbreaks) and stool samples (two outbreaks) from involved people were tested for human calicivirus (HuCV) infection by enzyme immune assays (EIAs) using recombinant Norwalk virus (rNV) and Mexico virus (rMX) capsid antigens and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Of the 31 pairs of acute and convalescent serum specimens tested, 24 had a fourfold or more titer increase to rMX and 4 responded

Hip fractures in middle-aged men: a consequence of early retirement and alcohol misuse?

From the 1950s to the 1980s the incidence of hip fractures in women aged 50-64 and cervical fractures in men of the same age in Malmö did not increase, whereas the incidence of trochanteric fracture in men aged 50-64 increased significantly. Significant background factors in men were alcohol misuse, living alone, early retirement, previous fractures, low weight/height ratio and less severe trauma--more in men with trochanteric than in men with cervical fracture. The deviant life-style and suspected physical inertia in this group of middle-aged men probably predisposes to osteoporosis and incre

Functional mobility and cardiometabolic multimorbidity: Evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has increased the burden of cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), defined as the presence of two or more cardiometabolic diseases. Functional mobility is a marker of systemic ageing and adverse health outcomes, but its association with CMM remains unclear among Chinese adults. METHODS: Data were from 16,032 adults aged ≥45 years in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018). Functional limitation was assessed using Activities of Daily Living and a seven-item mobility scale. The primary exposure was a standardised composite score based on the e

Personality Moderates the Improvement of Depressive Symptoms After Retirement: Evidence from the GAZEL Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested a positive effect of retirement on depressive symptoms. The present study took advantage of the large-scale, prospective Gaz et Electricité (GAZEL) cohort to examine whether personality could influence this effect. METHODS: Depressive symptoms were assessed in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2008 with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Among the participants for which changes in depressive symptoms after retirement could be computed, 9,755 had completed the Buss and Durkee Hostility Inventory and the Bortner Type A Ratin

Former premenarcheal gymnasts exhibit site-specific skeletal benefits in adulthood after long-term retirement.

Young female gymnasts have greater bone strength compared to controls; although possibly due to selection into gymnastics, it is thought that their loading activity during growth increases their bone mass, influencing both bone geometry and architecture. If such bone mass and geometric adaptations are maintained, this may potentially decrease the risk of osteoporosis and risk of fracture later in life. However, there is limited evidence of the persisting benefit of gymnastic exercise during growth on adult bone geometric parameters. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether

[57-year-old female patient in early retirement with underweight and chronic-relapsing diarrhoea].

Underweight as a consequence of chronic diarrhoea may lead to fatigue, tiredness and impaired physical performance, especially when the underlying cause has not been evaluated. In spite of algorithms as a help in the differential diagnosis, an individual approach with critical consideration of diet history, laboratory data and imaging procedures is necessary. Additional difficulties may arise when the history of food intolerance is inconsistent and technical findings including endoscopy are inconclusive. We report on a 57-year-old female patient with underweight, chronic intermittent diarrhoea

Trauma, identity and transition: evaluation of the RESLEAPS programme for retiring senior police officers.

INTRODUCTION: Police officers are repeatedly exposed to trauma throughout their careers, with senior leaders experiencing the cumulative burden of critical incidents, organisational stress, and public accountability. As many retire in midlife, the transition can be psychologically disruptive, impacting identity, mental health, and future employability. This study evaluated a novel RESilient LEAders - Police Superintendents (RESLEAPS) resettlement programme designed to support psychological wellbeing, resilience and future employability during this transition. METHODS: This evaluation combined

Associations of current and birthplace region with immunity in later life in the health and retirement study.

The United States has well-documented regional disparities in health outcomes. Functioning of the immune system is highly influenced by the environment, suggesting that geographic variation in immune cell composition maybe an underlying factor behind health disparities. This study examines whether current and birth region of residence is associated with markers of immune aging in a nationally representative sample of older adults. We analyzed immune cell subsets from 8472 participants measured in the 2016 wave of US Health and Retirement Study. Two-level regression models accounting for census

Retired contact sports athletes with cognitive concerns: promoting lifelong brain health.

There is widespread concern among former athletes about the link between head injury and dementia. Neurologists are increasingly assessing ex-contact sports athletes with cognitive and behavioural issues following repetitive head impacts and traumatic brain injury. Their assessment and management can be challenging due to the broad differential diagnosis, including psychiatric issues, trauma-related impairment and, in some cases, neurodegeneration. There may be a range of pathologies present after trauma exposure, including Alzheimer's disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Currently, w

Blood-brain barrier disruption, traumatic encephalopathy, and cognitive decline in retired athletes.

Cerebrovascular disruption has been implicated in the pathophysiology of head trauma and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). However, the long-term consequences of repetitive head trauma on blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and its link to cognitive function remain unknown. Here, using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), we show that BBB disruption can be detected years after the retirement of combat and collision sports athletes (n = 47) from their respective sports. A subgroup of individuals (n = 17) with extensive BBB disruption displayed worse cognitive de

Rates of Self-Reported Skin Cancer in Current and Retired Elite Australian Cricketers.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer rates are high in Australians, outdoor workers and physically active people. Australia is currently preparing a roadmap to better assess high risk groups for consideration of more targeted skin screening. METHODS: The membership of the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), both current and retired cricketers, was invited to participate in a questionnaire survey to assess self-reported rates of skin cancer (and associated risk factors). RESULTS: Response rate was 451 subjects (29% of 1530 invited participants), of which 39% were female. Cohort self-reported melanoma

Uncovering Perceived Barriers to the Acceptance of Retirement Villages in Malaysia: A Factor Analytic Approach.

Population aging is reshaping housing and care systems, yet retirement village (RV) acceptance remains limited in Malaysia. This study examines perceived barriers influencing attitudinal acceptance of RVs using a cross-sectional survey of 142 adults in Klang Valley. Exploratory factor analysis identified five barrier dimensions: environmental and service quality, financial capability and affordability, regulatory and policy support, psychosocial, and socio-cultural factors. Environmental and financial barriers were most salient. The findings show that perceived barriers cluster into interconne
