Pulmonary venous connections may be infrequently abnormal in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). A special subgroup of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return,"scimitar cyndrome", and its coexistence with TOF is less frequently reported. It may proceed unnoticed, as cyanosis already predominates in the clinical picture. This uncommon association must be kept in mind for patients with TOF who have an accessory flow in the inferior vena cava, especially when all pulmonary venous return to the left atrium is not clearly seen.

Horseshoe lung is a rare, congenital, pulmonary anomaly in which the caudal and basal segments of the left and right lungs are joined together. Most cases of horseshoe lung are associated with scimitar syndrome. Horseshoe lung can be diagnosed using pulmonary angiography, showing that the isthmus of the pulmonary parenchyma crosses the midline into the contralateral side. The isthmus parenchyma is typically supplied by the hypoplastic pulmonary artery. Clinical symptoms, therapeutic methods, and prognosis depend on the incidence of pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, recurrent pneumonia, an

Here we report a case of a term newborn presenting with left palpebral ptosis, anisocoria and heterochromia as well as cleft palate and heart murmur. Congenital Horner syndrome was suspected and a thoracoabdominal CT scan was performed to rule out neuroblastoma. This revealed an anomalous drainage of right pulmonary veins to a collector that drains to the inferior vena cava, leading to the diagnosis of Scimitar syndrome. Echocardiogram showed an ostium secundum atrial septal defect, enlarged right chambers and a dilated coronary sinus due to a persistent left superior vena cava. The combinatio

Scimitar syndrome represents a rare variant of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with right lung hypoplasia, dextrocardia, and concomitant airway-vessel abnormalities. Surgical correction is preferred in symptomatic patients or in patients with increased left-to-right shunt. In this report, the first case of scimitar syndrome with dual arterial supply and venous drainage to be treated with thoracoscopic approach is presented.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly essentially requiring surgical management. Nonsurgical interventional treatments are rarely possible and are associated with poor outcome. We report a case of Scimitar syndrome with obstructed partial pulmonary venous confluence, large patent ductus arteriosus, and severe pulmonary artery hypertension, where a significant decrease in the pulmonary artery pressure was achieved by pulmonary venous stenting in combination with coiling of aberrant vascular supply to the sequestered lung segment. However, the child succumbed to lower respiratory tract

We report a two-year-old female child with scimitar syndrome associated with absent pulmonary artery but with normal pulmonary artery pressure although several collaterals originated from the abdominal aorta to the right lung. To our knowledge, this is the fifth case with an absent pulmonary artery. Our case also had microphthalmia, an association not previously described in scimitar syndrome.

Twelve children, aged 6 days to 6 months (mean: 42 +/- 23 days) were diagnosed as presenting with the scimitar syndrome. In this syndrome, anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, hypoplasia of the right pulmonary artery and parenchyma, variety of "sequestrum" of the right pulmonary artery and parenchyma, variety of "sequestrum" of the right pulmonary base usually fed by subdiaphragmatic branches of the aorta are associated. Respiratory disorders were constant, severe in 8 cases. X-rays showed "dextro-cardia" and "hypoplasia of the right lung". Endocardiac investigation assessed the diagnosis and

Scimitar syndrome is characterised by anomalous right pulmonary venous drainage to the inferior vena cava associated with right pulmonary artery hypoplasia. We present a case of an infant with Scimitar syndrome with a well-formed right pulmonary artery, in high Qp heart failure who was managed with right pulmonary artery banding after thorough haemodynamic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome (ScS) features a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the inferior vena cava, with possible septal defects, right lung hypoplasia, and aortopulmonary collaterals. We hypothesize that cardiac magnetic resonance imaging measurements can elucidate ScS physiology and guide surgical decisions.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 26 patients diagnosed with ScS from 2011 to 2022 at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Patients with single-ventricle physiology were excluded. Medical records were reviewed for patient characteristics and cardiac m

Bronchial carcinoid tumors occur predominantly in the perihilar location and can be asymptomatic. They may present in early stages with only obstructive features such as mucus plugging of airways resulting in bronchocele formation. We report the case of a 44-year lady with no chest complaints, who underwent chest radiograph for a routine preanesthetic checkup. A vertically oriented, tubular, soft tissue density lesion was observed in the right lower lung, which mimicked a Scimitar vein. Scimitar syndrome is a congenital disorder in which an anomalous vein drains the middle and lower lobes of r

We present a 9-year-old male with a history of cyanosis diagnosed as scimitar syndrome with tetralogy of Fallot with left anterior descending coronary artery crossing right ventricle outflow tract. He underwent reimplantation of scimitar vein into right atrium baffled into left atrium along with intracardiac repair for tetralogy of Fallot. Postoperative recovery was uneventful and the patient was discharged on postoperative Day 8 and was asymptomatic at follow-up at 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital disease characterized by partial or total anomalous pulmonary venous return from the right lung into the systemic venous system, and accounts for 0.5-2% of all congenital heart disease. Severe forms of the disease are diagnosed in childhood. However, because of the benign form of the syndrome in adults, many are asymptomatic, or present only mild symptoms including exertional dyspnoea, arrhythmias, and respiratory infections. We report an atypical presentation with hepatomegaly.
CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old woman was evaluated for abdominal di

BACKGROUND Scimitar syndrome (SCS) is a rare congenital cardiopulmonary malformation, characterized by anomalous pulmonary venous drainage from the right lung associated with aortopulmonary collateral arteries and pulmonary hypoplasia. The variant described in the case presented here, with total anomalous right pulmonary venous drainage into the superior and inferior vena cava, can be expected in 2% of patients with scimitar syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, the association between the variant of SCS and coarctation of aorta described in our patient has never been reported before in the

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) comprises a group of congenital cardiovascular anomalies associated with pulmonary venous flow directly or indirectly into the right atrium. Scimitar syndrome is a variant of PAPVR in which the right lung is drained by right pulmonary veins connected anomalously to the inferior vena cava. Surgery is the definitive treatment for scimitar syndrome. However, it is not always necessary as many patients are asymptomatic, have small left-to-right shunts, and enjoy a normal life expectancy without surgery. We report multimodality imaging in four adult

PURPOSE: To report the anatomical associations and radiological characteristics of Scimitar syndrome on CT and MR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of the medical records between February 2001 and February 2016 was performed. To identify patients, radiological reports were queried for "Scimitar" or "partial anomalous pulmonary venous return." Patients with radiological findings of Scimitar syndrome were included. Patients without cross-sectional imaging were excluded. Patients' demographics, radiologic images, and medical notes were reviewed. Two radiologists re-read the available

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by anomalous drainage of the right pulmonary veins in the inferior vena cava, frequently associated with right lung and pulmonary artery hypoplasia, dextrocardia and abnormal systemic arterial supply to the lower lobe. Pulmonary resection surgery on healthy lung is exceptional, and there are no published records of it, as far as we know. A man with scimitar syndrome diagnosed with a lung nodule with malignant features in the contralateral lung. This situation implies huge anaesthetic complexity, mainly for intraoperative ventilation.

Scimitar syndrome is characterized by partial or total anomalous pulmonary venous return from the right lung. We present a 15-month-old boy who was diagnosed with Scimitar syndrome after examinations for recurrent wheezing and respiratory distress. The chest radiograph showed a scimitar sign in the right hemithorax, obscuring the contours of the right atrium. Echocardiography showed dilatation of the right heart cavities and increased flow in the inferior vena cava, without a cardiac abnormality. The patient underwent cardiac catheterization for radiographic and hemodynamic evaluations, during
