Association of ovarian hormones with mapping concept of self and others in the brain's default mode network.

The brain's default mode network (DMN) has become closely associated with self-referential mental activity, particularly in the resting-state. Prior reports point that the sex hormones are potent modulators of brain plasticity and functional connectivity. However, it is uncertain whether changes in ovarian hormones, as occur during the monthly menstrual cycle, substantially affects the functional connectivity of DMN. Here, we employed a Self-Awareness Scale (SAS) and the resting-state functional MRI in the late follicular phase and the mid-luteal phase to investigate the effect of the estradio

Childhood neglect and its effect on self-conception and attachment in adulthood: A structural equation model.

OBJECTIVE: Neglect stands out as one of the most prevalent forms of childhood maltreatment. However, due to its less overt nature than other forms of abuse, it has received comparatively less attention in the scientific literature. To contribute in filling this gap, the present research aimed to delve deeper into the role of childhood neglect in influencing the structuring of self-image and interpersonal relationships in adulthood. METHOD: A total of 820 participants (Mage = 31.86 years; SD = 11.68) were included in the research. Structural equation modeling was implemented to analyze the col

The uncertain self: Intolerance of uncertainty moderates the association of both positive and disorganized schizotypal traits with self-concept clarity in a non-clinical sample.

Our objective was to investigate the relationship between self-concept clarity, intolerance of uncertainty, and schizotypal traits, with a focus on whether intolerance of uncertainty moderates the association between self-concept clarity and positive schizotypy in a non-clinical context. A sample of 315 adults (on average 43 (SD = 12) years, 247 women) completed the Self-Concept Clarity Scale, the Intolerance of Uncertainty scale, and the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire - Brief Revised. Lower self-concept clarity was significantly associated with higher levels of positive, negative, and

SSVEP-based brain-computer interface enabling graded dyspnoea self-report: proof-of-concept study in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Mechanically ventilated patients may experience respiratory suffering, which is difficult to assess when verbal communication is impaired. We evaluated the performance of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) designed to enable self-reporting of dyspnoea in this context. METHODS: Forty-nine healthy volunteers were studied under five respiratory conditions: normal breathing (NB), inspiratory resistive loading (IRL), inspiratory threshold loading (ITL), CO₂ inhalation (CO₂), and a return to NB as wash-out (NBWO). Respiratory discomfort w

AI-Assisted Student-Centered Instruction and Adolescents' Academic Self-Concept and Communication Competence: A Mixed-Methods Study.

This classroom-based mixed-methods quasi-experimental study examined whether AI-assisted student-centered instruction was associated with changes in adolescents' academic self-concept and self-reported communication competence. Six intact classes were assigned to either the AI-assisted instruction or the usual student-centered instruction condition. The intervention embedded AI-supported prompts into a structured learning cycle comprising individual inquiry, peer discussion, teacher clarification, and self-evaluation. Of the 186 recruited students, 174 were retained for quantitative analysis.

Self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS): In vivo-proof of concept for oral delivery of insulin glargine.

In spite of recent progress made in the field of peptide and protein delivery, oral administration of insulin and similar drugs remains a challenge. In this study, lipophilicity of insulin glargine (IG) was successfully increased via hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP) with sodium octadecyl sulfate to enable incorporation into self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). Two SEDDS formulations (F1: 20% Labrasol®ALF, 30% polysorbate 80, 10% Croduret 50, 20% oleyl alcohol, 20% Maisine® CC; F2: 30% Labrasol®ALF, 20% polysorbate 80, 30% Kolliphor® HS 15, 20% Plurol® oleique CC 497) were developed and

Advancing the Pathways Model: Financially Focused Self-concept and Erroneous Beliefs as Core Psychopathologies in Disordered Gambling.

In the Pathways Model, there are three distinct etiological subtypes of disordered gambling (Behaviourally Conditioned, Emotionally Vulnerable, and Anti-Social Impulsive Risk-Taker). The Pathways Model also posits that erroneous gambling beliefs are a maintenance factor of disordered gambling across the subtypes. Yet, etiological factors and erroneous beliefs have largely been examined separately when determining disordered gambling subtype. Moreover, there may be heretofore unexamined maintenance factors that span the disordered gambling subtypes. In the current research, we addressed this ga

Using concept mapping to prioritize barriers to diabetes care and self-management for those who experience homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a chronic medical condition which demands that patients engage in self-management to achieve optimal glycemic control and avoid severe complications. Individuals who have diabetes and are experiencing homelessness are more likely to have chronic hyperglycemia and adverse outcomes. Our objective was to collaborate with individuals experiencing homelessness and care providers to understand the barriers they face in managing diabetes, as a first step in identifying solutions for enhancing diabetes management in this population. METHODS: We recruited individuals with lived

Intolerance of uncertainty, causal uncertainty, causal importance, self-concept clarity and their relations to generalized anxiety disorder.

Although numerous studies have provided support for the notion that intolerance of uncertainty plays a key role in pathological worry (the hallmark feature of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)), other uncertainty-related constructs may also have relevance for the understanding of individuals who engage in pathological worry. Three constructs from the social cognition literature, causal uncertainty, causal importance, and self-concept clarity, were examined in the present study to assess the degree to which these explain unique variance in GAD, over and above intolerance of uncertainty. Investigating the events that predispose vulnerable and feared self-concepts in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The feared self-concept, the self that a person fears they may be or could become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is proposed that the feared self develops from a vulnerable self-concept, which itself is a result of normative self-concept development being disrupted by negative early life experiences. However, it is currently unclear which experiences lead to the development of vulnerable self-concept in people with OCD. This study aimed to describe the events and life experiences that people with OCD

Sexual Self-Concept and Psychological Functioning of Women With a History of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Hong Kong.

Sexual self-concept (SSC) is an important component of health that is closely associated with the well-being of survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). Compared with non-CSA respondents, SSC of CSA survivors was deleteriously affected, resulting in ineffective psychological functioning (negative self-evaluation, psychological ill-health, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships). Negative SSC (sexual anxiety, sexual depression, and sexual fear) played a significant role in mediating the adverse effects of CSA on psychological functioning. Future studies may recruit a sample with greater
