The zoonotic protozoans Cryptosporidium and Giardia are major drivers of the global gastrointestinal disease burden, circulating through complex human-animal-environment interfaces. This review synthesizes global epidemiological data to evaluate the role of fish and shellfish as reservoirs and potential conduits for zoonotic transmission. The pooled prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. was 8.7% (858/9878) in fish and 16.5% (1459/8820) in shellfish. Likewise, the pooled prevalence of Giardia spp. in fish and shellfish were approximately 8.3% (30/361) and 6.2% (332/5392), respectively. Zoonotic Cr

Human astrovirus (HAstV) and sapovirus (SaV) are significant pathogens associated with acute gastroenteritis in humans. This study established a triple reverse transcription-droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (RT-ddPCR) assay incorporating MS2 phage as a process control virus for the simultaneous quantification of HAstV and SaV. The assay was validated using 240 bivalve samples, comprising five shellfish species: Ostreidae (n = 43), Ruditapes philippinarum (n = 84), Sinonovacula constricta (n = 27), Scapharca subcrenata (n = 23), and Pectinidae (n = 63). The results indicated that

The producer of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), Alexandrium catenella, is one of the main generators of HABs in the coasts of Chile. Its presence produces ecological and economic damage, directly affecting filter-feeding organisms, and indirectly to other organism through the trophic chain. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of a toxic diet on the energetic and reproductive parameters of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Two groups of snails were used, one fed with toxic prey (bivalves fed with A. catenella), and the other fed with non-toxic prey. Both treatments

Molluscan shellfish (gastropods and bivalves) were collected from major fish markets on the Korean coast and analyzed for mercury by direct Hg analyzer and for other metals, such as cadmium, lead, chromium, silver, nickel, copper and zinc, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Distribution of heavy metals in muscles, internal organs and whole tissues were determined and a potential risk assessment was conducted to evaluate their hazard for human consumption. Heavy metals were accumulated significantly higher (P < 0.05) in internal organs than in muscles for all species. The mean

Fish and shellfish have important nutritional benefits, and US per capita seafood consumption has increased substantially since 2002. Recent research has reinforced concerns about adverse effects of methylmercury exposure, suggesting that methylmercury doses associated with typical US rates of fish consumption may pose measurable risks, with no threshold. These converging trends create a need to improve risk communication about fish consumption and mercury. The analysis performed here identifies the relative importance of different fish and shellfish as sources of mercury in the US seafood sup

Recent concerns regarding the safety of shellfish consumption have focused on the risk posed by naturally occurring marine bacteria such as Vibrio species and by viruses such as Norwalk and related agents. Despite the widespread environmental presence of Vibrio species in the Chesapeake Bay, the rate of reported infections remains low; there have also been no reports of major Norwalk outbreaks associated with shellfish in this area. As infections with these agents may not always be recognized because of difficulties in making the diagnosis and/or their mild or subclinical presentation, a seros

Clostridioides difficile infection is a global health concern, with increasing community-associated cases. Environmental sources may contribute to transmission. This study assessed hypervirulent C. difficile in wastewater and shellfish in southern Taiwan. From April to September 2020, water samples were collected from two domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), one hospital WWTP, and shellfish from an aquafarm in Tainan City. C. difficile isolates underwent molecular identification, toxin gene detection, ribotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility, and multi-locus variable-number tandem rep

Domoic acid (DA) is a well-known phycotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) and is mainly produced by diatom species belonging to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. An annual survey was conducted monthly over the period of September 2020 to August 2021 in Daya Bay of the South China Sea to investigate the dynamics of particulate and shellfish DA and their relationships with the abundance of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and environmental parameters. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. was one of the most dominant phytoplankton taxa, and a Pseudo-nitzschia bloom occurred during the survey with the highest abu

Harmful algal blooms in Chinese waters have caused serious domoic acid (DA) contamination in shellfish. Although shellfish are at particular risk of dietary exposure to DA, there have been no systematic DA risk assessments in Chinese coastal waters. A total of 451 shellfish samples were collected from March to November 2020. The presence of DA and four of its isomers were detected using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The spatial-temporal distribution of DA occurrence and its potential health risks were examined. DA was detected in 198 shellfish samples (43.90%), with a maximum

Shellfish-growing areas in marine environments are affected by pollutants that mainly originate from land, including streams, domestic wastewater, and the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which may function as reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs). The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistance at five oyster sampling sites and 11 major inland pollution sources in the drainage basin of Kamak Bay, Republic of Korea. Culture-based methods were used to estimate the diversity a

Paralytic shellfish Toxins (PSTs) or saxitoxins are neurotoxins that block the neural transmission by binding to the voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve cells. There are >50 analogues described, which could be biotransformed into a molecular form of greater or lesser toxicity. The Alagados Reservoir is used for water supply, and persistent cyanobacterial blooms as well as PSTs concentrations have been found in this water body since 2002. The aims of this study were to quantify the concentrations of PSTs in the water and fish samples from the Alagados Reservoir. In addition, we evaluated

Blooms of Alexandrium species, in particular the species Alexandrium catenella, accounted for more than 50% of algal related, shellfish aquaculture harvest zone closures in New South Wales (NSW) Australia since 2005. While there are indications that species of Alexandrium are more abundant than they were formerly, there is little data available on the spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of the genus in NSW. A six and a half year dataset comprising a total of 8649 fortnightly samples from 31 estuaries spread over 2000 km of NSW coastline was analysed. The greatest abundances of Alex

Bacterial strains of the Bacillus cereus group produce various toxins that cause diarrheal and emetic food poisoning. In this study, five main oyster farming areas and 15 fishing ports in Taiwan were examined for the status of B. cereus group bacteria inhabiting seawater and shellfish. On average, bacteria of the B. cereus group were detected in 32.6% of the seawater samples (n = 89) and 2.5% of the oysters (n = 81) in the oyster farming areas and in 7.9% of the seawater samples (n = 202) and 0.68% of the shellfish products (n = 292) in fishing ports. To trace the potential source of B. cereus

Sheep bone soup (SBS) is popular but faces challenges in flavor richness and mutton odor. Four shellfish species, including Ruditapes philippinarum, Mactra chinensis, Sinonovacula constricta, and Meretrix meretrix, were used to enhance the flavor profiles of SBS in the present study. All the shellfish-added groups showed a great increase in saltiness, richness, and umami as revealed by E-tongue. Umami/sweet free amino acids, 5'-nucleotides, and fumaric acid were elevated after shellfish addition. E-nose could efficiently distinguish the five SBS groups. 68 volatile flavor compounds were identi
