Detection and discrimination of first- and second-order motion in patients with unilateral brain damage.

The present investigation explored the extent to which extrastriate cortex is necessary for various aspects of motion processing and whether the processing of first-order (Fourier) and second-order (non-Fourier) motion involves the same extrastriate cortical regions. Orientation, direction, and speed discrimination thresholds were measured in 21 patients with unilateral damage to the lateral occipital, temporal, or posterior parietal cortex. Their results were compared with those of 14 age-matched control subjects. The stimuli were static random-dot noise patterns, the luminance of which (firs

Where are my hands? Influence of limb posture on tactile extinction.

OBJECTIVE: Tactile localization on the skin involves both a somatotopic and a postural schema (body-schema) representation. The present study determines the extent to which body posture influences tactile perception in right-brain-damaged patients. METHOD: In a first set of experiments, patients were asked to detect single tactile stimulation delivered to their left or right hands or to both hands simultaneously (double stimulation) in different arm postures. Only patients who had no difficulty localizing single and double tactile stimulations when their hands were placed in anatomic position

Generating facial expressions of disgust activates neurons in the thoracic spinal cord: a spinal fMRI study.

Facial expressions of disgust, which involve movement of the levator labii muscles on the nose, allow an organism to restrict the intake of potentially aversive stimuli by constricting the air cavities in the nostrils and reducing the speed of air intake. In the current research, we used fMRI of the thoracic spinal cord to measure neural activity related to (1) the contraction of the intercostal muscles that modulate the velocity of air intake and (2) the sensory feedback associated with this contraction. Thirteen participants completed two spinal fMRI runs in which the thoracic segments of th

Methylphenidate Enhances Early-Stage Sensory Processing and Rodent Performance of a Visual Signal Detection Task.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is used clinically to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and off-label as a performance-enhancing agent in healthy individuals. MPH enhances catecholamine transmission via blockade of norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) reuptake transporters. However, it is not clear how this action affects neural circuits performing cognitive and sensorimotor functions driving performance enhancement. The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) is the primary thalamic relay for visual information from the retina to the cortex and is densely innervated by NE-containi

A study on variability of quantitative sensory testing in healthy participants and painful temporomandibular disorder patients.

OBJECTIVES: Quantitative sensory testing has mainly used thresholds to evaluate somatosensory sensitivity so far. The variability of different measures from session to session has also been investigated, but the variability of the single individual measures of a threshold or subject-based reports has not been considered. This study aimed to investigate the potential value of threshold variability in one session as a measure of internal consistency in somatosensory function. METHODS: The standardized quantitative sensory testing battery developed by the German Research Network on Neuropathic P

The interaction of vocal characteristics and audibility in the recognition of concurrent syllables.

In concurrent-speech recognition, performance is enhanced when either the glottal pulse rate (GPR) or the vocal tract length (VTL) of the target speaker differs from that of the distracter, but relatively little is known about the trading relationship between the two variables, or how they interact with other cues such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This paper presents a study in which listeners were asked to identify a target syllable in the presence of a distracter syllable, with carefully matched temporal envelopes. The syllables varied in GPR and VTL over a large range, and they were pres

Response and remission in adolescent mania: signal detection analyses of the young mania rating scale.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine optimal criteria for defining response and remission in adolescents with acute mania. METHOD: Data were analyzed from three treatment studies of adolescents with acute mania (N = 99). Trained raters completed the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and clinicians completed the Clinical Global Impressions Scale for Bipolar Disorder (CGI-BP) independent of YMRS ratings. For response, the percentages of reduction in YMRS scores from baseline to endpoint were compared with CGI-BP Mania Improvement scores. For remission, endpoint YMRS scores were

Branched-chain aminotransferase 1 promotes Schwann cell migration and proliferation to accelerate facial nerve regeneration through the Twist/FoxC1 and Sox2 pathways.

Facial paralysis caused by injury to the facial nerve is common clinical presentation resulting in significant physical and psychological damage. In addition, due to the lack of understanding about the mechanisms of injury and repair and the lack of effective treatment targets, the clinical treatment outcomes for such patients remain poor. Schwann cells (SCs) have a central role in the regeneration of nerve myelin. In a rat model of facial nerves crush injury, we found that branched-chain aminotransferase 1 (BCAT1) was upregulated after injury. Moreover, it had a positive role in nerve repair.

Visual engagement modulates cortical criticality and auditory target detection thresholds in noisy soundscapes.

The widely held assumption that closing eyes enhances auditory sensitivity has been supported by auditory attention experiments. However, the visual effects on auditory thresholds of detecting target sounds masked by noise remain unexplored. We investigated the participants' detection thresholds (n = 25) of target sounds (canoe paddle, drum, lark chirping, train, and keyboard) masked by 70 dB(A) pink noise under four visual conditions (eyes closed, eyes open with blank board, static visual stimulation, and dynamic visual stimulation). Taking blank visual stimulation as the baseline, eye closur

Dissociable effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS reveal distinct functional roles for right parietal cortex in the detection of single and competing stimuli.

Spatial attention can be used to direct neural processing resources to a subset of task-relevant or otherwise salient items within the environment. Such selective processes are particularly important for resolving competition between multiple stimuli. Deficits in processing single stimuli can arise after damage to parietal, frontal and temporal brain regions, as is typical in patients with contralesional spatial neglect. By contrast, deficits in processing multiple competing stimuli may arise specifically following lesions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), as occurs in the disorder of sp

The effects of ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral broadband noise on the mid-level hump in intensity discrimination.

Previous psychoacoustical and physiological studies indicate that the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a bilateral, sound-evoked reflex, may lead to improved sound intensity discrimination in background noise. The MOCR can decrease the range of basilar-membrane compression and can counteract effects of neural adaptation from background noise. However, the contribution of these processes to intensity discrimination is not well understood. This study examined the effect of ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral noise on the "mid-level hump." The mid-level hump refers to intensity discrimin

Can comodulation masking release occur when frequency changes could promote perceptual segregation of the on-frequency and flanking bands?

A common characteristic of natural sounds is that the level fluctuations in different frequency regions are coherent. The ability of the auditory system to use this comodulation is shown when a sinusoidal signal is masked by a masker centred at the signal frequency (on-frequency masker, OFM) and one or more off-frequency components, commonly referred to as flanking bands (FBs). In general, the threshold of the signal masked by comodulated masker components is lower than when masked by masker components with uncorrelated envelopes or in the presence of the OFM only. This effect is commonly refe

No Colavita effect: equal auditory and visual processing in people with one eye.

Previous research has shown that people with one eye have enhanced spatial vision implying intra-modal compensation for their loss of binocularity. The current experiments investigate whether monocular blindness from unilateral eye enucleation may lead to cross-modal sensory compensation for the loss of one eye. We measured speeded detection and discrimination of audiovisual targets presented as a stream of paired objects and familiar sounds in a group of individuals with monocular enucleation compared to controls viewing binocularly or monocularly. In Experiment 1, participants detected the p

Postnatal development of onset transient responses in macaque V1 AND V2 neurons.

EGF receptors (EGFRs) are increased in airway smooth muscle in asthma, which may contribute to both their hyperproliferation and hypercontractility. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a candidate pathological agent in asthma and other airway diseases, and LPA upregulates EGFRs in human airway smooth muscle (HASM) cells. We tested whether therapeutic glucocorticoids and/or beta(2)-adrenergic receptor (beta(2)AR) agonists also alter EGFR binding in HASM cells. Exposure to glucocorticoids for 24 h induced a twofold increase in EGFR binding similar to that with LPA; fluticasone was markedly more poten

Characterization of the effects of inhaled perchloroethylene on sustained attention in rats performing a visual signal detection task.

The aliphatic hydrocarbon perchloroethylene (PCE) has been associated with neurobehavioral dysfunction including reduced attention in humans. The current study sought to assess the effects of inhaled PCE on sustained attention in rats performing a visual signal detection task (SDT). Due to its similarities in physiological effect to toluene and trichloroethylene (TCE), two other commonly used volatile organic compounds (VOCs) known to reduce attention in rats, we hypothesized (1) that acute inhalation of PCE (0, 500, 1000, 1500 ppm) would disrupt performance of the SDT in rats; (2) that impair

Bilateral effects of unilateral visual cortex lesions in human.

We studied the vision of 12 patients with unilateral lesions of the visual cortex. All had a VI-type scotoma located in the contralateral visual fields, as expected, and visual acuity of 20/30 or better. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that they also had a visual deficit in their ipsilesional or 'good' visual fields. The first experiment tested the subjects' ability to respond to transient signals presented at unpredictable temporal intervals and spatial locations amongst many spatially random and identical distracter elements. The results showed that, compared with controls, the lesion gro

Theories about Developmental Dyslexia.

Despite proving its usefulness for over a century, the concept of developmental dyslexia (DD) is currently in severe disarray because of the recent introduction of the phonological theory of its causation. Since mastering the phonological principle is essential for all reading, failure to do so cannot be used to distinguish DD from the many other causes of such failure. To overcome this problem, many new psychological, signal detection, and neurological theories have been introduced recently. All these new theories converge on the idea that DD is fundamentally caused by impaired signalling of

Neuropsychological Deficits Chronically Developed after Focal Ischemic Stroke and Beneficial Effects of Pharmacological Hypothermia in the Mouse.

Stroke is a leading cause of human death and disability, with around 30% of stroke patients develop neuropsychological/neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as post-stroke depression (PSD). Basic and translational research on post-stroke psychological disorders is limited. In a focal ischemic stroke mouse model with selective damage to the sensorimotor cortex, sensorimotor deficits develop soon after stroke and spontaneous recovery is observed in 2-4 weeks. We identified that mice subjected to a focal ischemic insult gradually developed depression/anxiety like behaviors 4 to 8 weeks after stroke. Ps

Avoiding false negatives: are some auditory hallucinations an evolved design flaw?

BACKGROUND: This paper draws on cognitive psychology research and clinical observation to propose a model for the formation of auditory hallucinations that are located externally, and experienced in noisy environments. METHOD: This model highlights a series of cognitive processes that may make an individual prone to detecting false positives, i.e. believing they have heard something that is absent. A case study is used to illustrate the model. RESULTS: It is suggested that the false positives may be a by-product of a perceptual system that has evolved to reduce false negatives in conditions

Prestimulus frontal-parietal coherence predicts auditory detection performance in rats.

Electrophysiology in primates has implicated long-range neural coherence as a potential mechanism for enhancing sensory detection. To test whether local synchronization and long-range neural coherence support detection performance in rats, we recorded local field potentials (LFPs) in frontal and parietal cortex while rats performed an auditory detection task. We observed significantly elevated power at multiple low frequencies (<15 Hz) preceding the target beep when the animal failed to respond to the signal (misses), in both frontal and parietal cortex. In terms of long-range coherence, we ob
