OBJECTIVES: Acute stress prior to bedtime significantly alters the subsequent sleep. Although sleep is crucial for consolidating newly acquired memories, the impact of pre-sleep stress remains unclear. This experimental study examined how acute stress induction before bedtime influences overnight consolidation of emotional and neutral memories.
METHODS: 34 healthy adults (65% females, Mage = 25.76 years, SD = 3.35) were randomly assigned to stress (SC) or control (CC) conditions, using a virtual reality stress or control paradigm. Prior to manipulation, participants encoded emotional and neut

OBJECTIVE: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder and sleep-related problems may be expected. We investigated sleep-related problems in children with AT in relation to their clinical status.
METHODS: We administered Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children to patients with AT (n = 46) and a matched healthy control (HC) (n = 92). We defined clinical subgroups of AT as mild (n = 10) and moderate/severe (n = 36) according to patients' clinical scores. We compared the results between the groups.
RESULTS: The median age was 130.5 (104

BACKGROUND: Fatigue, sleep disorders, and daytime sleepiness are interconnected, posing significant risks to occupational health and workplace safety. However, the literature on their relationships remains fragmented, with notable gaps, particularly concerning working populations. This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate sleep quality (SQ), daily sleep time in hours (DST), daytime sleepiness, fatigue levels among employees in an automotive workplace, and their interrelationships.
METHODS: This study assessed fatigue, DST, SQ, and daytime sleepiness (DTS) among employees aged 2

The early detection and treatment of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is becoming an important issue in medical practice, as the conventional polysomnography-based method is not only costly, but also demands high expertise from technicians. In this study, we propose a method for diagnosing SAS using noninvasive measurements of oxygen saturation (SpO2), obtained from a pulse oximeter as the input signal, using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). As a result of 10-fold cross-validation, we confirmed that the proposed method yields an 88.99% accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Automatic sleep staging is essential for assessing sleep quality and diagnosing sleep disorders. While previous research has achieved high classification performance, most current sleep staging networks have only been validated in healthy populations, ignoring the impact of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) on sleep stage classification. In addition, it remains challenging to effectively improve the fine-grained detection of polysomnography (PSG) and capture multi-scale transitions between sleep stages. Therefore, a more widely applicable network is needed for sleep staging.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Fatal insomnia (FI) is a rare prion disease severely affecting sleep architecture. Breathing during sleep has not been systematically assessed. Our aim was to characterize the sleep architecture, respiratory patterns, and neuropathologic findings in FI.
METHODS: Eleven consecutive FI patients (ten familial, one sporadic) were examined with video-polysomnography (vPSG) between 2002 and 2017. Wake/sleep stages and respiration were evaluated using a modified scoring system. Postmortem neuropathology was assessed in seven patients.
RESULTS: Median age at onset was 48 years and

The American Thoracic Society Sleep Core Curriculum updates clinicians on important sleep topics, presented during the annual meeting, and appearing in summary here. This year's sleep core theme is sleep-disordered breathing and its management. Topics range from pathophysiological mechanisms for the association of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and metabolic syndrome, surgical modalities of OSA treatment, comorbid insomnia and OSA, central sleep apnea, and sleep practices during a pandemic. OSA has been associated with metabolic syndrome, independent of the role of obesity, and the pathophysiol

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that sleep stage dynamics are different in patients with sleep bruxism (SB) and that these changes are associated with the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA).
METHODS: Fifteen healthy controls and 15 patients with SB underwent overnight polysomnography. Sleep variables and survival curves of continuous runs of each sleep stage were compared between the groups. Stage transition dynamics and the probability of stage fragmentation were analyzed for three epochs before and after the epoch with RMMA. Survival curves of continuous runs of eac

Insufficient sleep syndrome (ISS) is prevalent, but poorly studied. This descriptive study was performed to determine its diagnostic challenges and clinical characteristics in a large (n = 3,461) retrospective sample from a single sleep laboratory. Based on actigraphy, polysomnography and multiple sleep latency tests, we diagnosed "suspected insufficient sleep syndrome" in patients with chronic sleepiness, short time in bed, longer sleep duration during weekends or vacation, and without evidence of other causes of sleepiness. For the diagnosis of "definite insufficient sleep syndrome", we addi

Sleep paralysis is the unusual experience of waking up in the night without the ability to move. Currently little is known about the experience, despite the fact that the vast majority of episodes are associated with extreme fear and in a minority of cases can lead to clinically significant levels of distress. The aim of this work was to review the existing literature pertaining to the relationship sleep paralysis has to sleep more generally, measured both with subjective questionnaires and objective laboratory recordings. In terms of subjective sleep variables, worse sleep quality has been fo

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the effect of short day-time sleep on photoparoxysmal epileptic activity in sleep-deprived patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed video-EEG recordings performed between 2003 and 2015. All recordings following at least four hours of sleep deprivation, including intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) both before and after sleep with any form of epileptiform activity were included. The study group was divided into four subgroups: (1) no photoparoxysmal response (PPR) group, with epileptiform activities other than PPRs; (2) increment group, with PPR dura

Sleep can improve the off-line memory consolidation of new items of declarative and non-declarative information in healthy subjects, whereas acute sleep loss, as well as sleep restriction and fragmentation, impair consolidation. This suggests that, by modifying the amount and/or architecture of sleep, chronic sleep disorders may also lead to a lower gain in off-line consolidation, which in turn may be responsible for the varying levels of impaired performance at memory tasks usually observed in sleep-disordered patients. The experimental studies conducted to date have shown specific impairment

INTRODUCTION: Sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) may induce albuminuria during sleep which could reflect one of the possible pathogenetic mechanisms regarding cardiovascular risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 224 patients with newly diagnosed OSAS, free of any chronic disease, and any regular drug therapy. The levels of urine albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) before (ACR-bsleep) and immediately after (ACR-asleep) a sleep study were determined. The same procedure was repeated during the first night on CPAP treatment (n = 121) and in 46 reevaluated patients, after 3 months, on CPAP therapy. Ambulat

Sleep is a neurochemical process involving sleep promoting and arousal centers in the brain. Sleep performs an essential restorative function and facilitates memory consolidation in humans. The remarkably standardized bouts of consolidated sleep at night and daytime wakefulness reflect an interaction between the homeostatic sleep need that is manifested by increase in sleep propensity after sleep deprivation and decrease during sleep and the circadian pacemaker. Melatonin, the hormone produced nocturnally by the pineal gland, serves as a time cue and sleep-anticipating signal. A close interact
