The Compatibility Between Biomphalaria glabrata Snails and Schistosoma mansoni: An Increasingly Complex Puzzle.

This review reexamines the results obtained in recent decades regarding the compatibility polymorphism between the snail, Biomphalaria glabrata, and the pathogen, Schistosoma mansoni, which is one of the agents responsible for human schistosomiasis. Some results point to the snail's resistance as explaining the incompatibility, while others support a "matching hypothesis" between the snail's immune receptors and the schistosome's antigens. We propose here that the two hypotheses are not exclusive, and that the compatible/incompatible status of a particular host/parasite couple probably reflect

Small Packages, Big Returns: Uncovering the Venom Diversity of Small Invertebrate Conoidean Snails.

Venomous organisms used in research were historically chosen based on size and availability. This opportunity-driven strategy created a species bias in which snakes, scorpions, and spiders became the primary subjects of venom research. Increasing technological advancements have enabled interdisciplinary studies using genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to expand venom investigation to animals that produce small amounts of venom or lack traditional venom producing organs. One group of non-traditional venomous organisms that have benefitted from the rise of -omic technologies is the Conoid

Importance of behavior and morphological traits for controlling body temperature in littorinid snails.

For organisms living in the intertidal zone, temperature is an important selective agent that can shape species distributions and drive phenotypic variation among populations. Littorinid snails, which occupy the upper limits of rocky shores and estuaries worldwide, often experience extreme high temperatures and prolonged aerial emersion during low tides, yet their robust physiology--coupled with morphological and behavioral traits--permits these gastropods to persist and exert strong grazing control over algal communities. We use a mechanistic heat-budget model to compare the effects of behavi

Snails as indicators of pesticide drift, deposit, transfer and effects in the vineyard.

This paper presents a field-study of real pesticide application conditions in a vineyard. The objective was to measure the exposure, the transfer and the effects of pesticides on a non-target soil invertebrate, the land snail Helix aspersa. There was no drift of the herbicides (glyphosate and glufosinate) whereas the fungicides (cymoxanil, folpet, tebuconazole and pyraclostrobin) were detected up to 20 m from the treated area. For folpet and particularly tebuconazole, spray deposits on soil (corresponding to losses for the intended target i.e. the vine leaves) were high (41.1% and 88.8% loss o

Rapid identification of lymnaeid snails and their infection with Fasciola gigantica in Thailand.

Freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae are the intermediate hosts of the liver fluke Fasciola worldwide. While distinct species have been identified at the molecular level in other parts of the world such data have not been published for Thailand. In this study we collected Lymnaeidae from different localities across Thailand and analyzed their 16S rDNA sequences as a molecular signature for classification. In addition to the ubiquitous Radix rubiginosa, we have confirmed the presence of Austropeplea viridis and Radix swinhoei, for the latter of which the ribosomal rDNA sequences are repor

Outbreeding alleviates senescence in hermaphroditic snails as expected from the mutation-accumulation theory.

Senescence, the decline in fitness components of an organism with age [1], is a nearly universal characteristic of living beings [2-6]. This ubiquity is challenging because natural selection does not favor the evolution of traits decreasing fitness [1, 7, 8]. Senescence may result from two nonexclusive mechanisms: the accumulation of deleterious mutations acting late in life, when the strength of natural selection against them declines [9-11] (mutation accumulation or MA hypothesis [12]) and the delayed cost of genes having beneficial effects early in life (antagonistic pleiotropy or AP hypoth

Fasciola hepatica and lymnaeid snails occurring at very high altitude in South America.

Fascioliasis due to the digenean species Fasciola hepatica has recently proved to be an important public health problem, with human cases reported in countries of the five continents, including severe symptoms and pathology, with singular epidemiological characteristics, and presenting human endemic areas ranging from hypo- to hyperendemic. One of the singular epidemiological characteristics of human fascioliasis is the link of the hyperendemic areas to very high altitude regions, at least in South America. The Northern Bolivian Altiplano, located at very high altitude (3800-4100 m), presents

Seasonal population densities of snails transmitting urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in Lusaka, Zambia.

The two molluscan intermediate hosts of S. haematobium schistosomiasis: Bulinus africanus and Bulinus globosus, were found most commonly in habitats that retained water for a substantial part of the year rather than in temporary rain-filled pools. Biomphalaria pfeifferi which transmits S. mansoni were found principally in streams and impoundments like dams but scarce in rivers. In a permanent habitat, the peak density of snails was between the warm, dry months of August and September while in a temporary habitat B. (Physopsis) sp. were most abundant towards the end of the rainy season in March

Snail immunity to schistosomes: insights from omics studies.

Schistosomiasis is a serious public health concern, with transmission facilitated by a small number of freshwater snail intermediate host species. Infection outcomes vary greatly across the primary vector genera, Biomphalaria (for Schistosoma mansoni), Bulinus (for S. haematobium), and Oncomelania (for S. japonicum), even within species, ranging from full resistance to high compatibility. Omics methods have altered this field by correlating host genotype, baseline immunological status, and time-resolved responses to whether invading miracidia are eliminated or develop sporocysts. Evidence from

[Watershed ecology-based rethinking of Oncomelania snail control].

Oncomelania hupensis is the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, and control of O. hupensis is of great significance in schistosomiasis control. As an amphibious mollusk, O. hupensis is frequently distributed in the fluctuating zones of rivers and lakes, and its distribution is along the water system and watershed. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge on the impact of watershed factors on the landscape and dynamic changes of O. hupensis distribution. As a novel discipline, watershed ecology will help reveal the internal relationship of snail distribution, identify the vulnerable

From a Cone Snail Toxin to a Competitive MC4R Antagonist.

The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) plays a role in energy homeostasis and represents a target for treating energy balance disorders. For decades, synthetic ligands have been derived from MC4R endogenous agonists and antagonists, such as setmelanotide used to treat rare forms of genetic obesity. Recently, animal venoms have demonstrated their capacity to provide melanocortin ligands with toxins from a scorpion and a spider. Here, we described a cone snail toxin, N-CTX-Ltg1a, with a nanomolar affinity for hMC4R but unrelated to any known toxins or melanocortin ligands. We then derived from the c

Molluscicides against the snail-intermediate host of Schistosoma: a review.

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is one of the most prevalent parasitoses in the World. Certain freshwater snail species are the intermediate host in the life cycle of schistosome species. Controlling snails employing molluscicides is an effective, quick, and convenient intervention strategy to prevent the spread of Schistosoma species in endemic regions. Advances have been made in developing both synthetic molluscicides and molluscicides derived from plants. However, at present, the development of molluscicides is not adapted to the actual demand for snails and schistosoma

Modeling schistosomiasis transmission: the importance of snail population structure.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease endemic in 54 countries. A major Schistosoma species, Schistosoma mansoni, is sustained via a life cycle that includes both human and snail hosts. Mathematical models of S. mansoni transmission, used to elucidate the complexities of the transmission cycle and estimate the impact of intervention efforts, often focus primarily on the human host. However, S. mansoni incurs physiological costs in snails that vary with the age of the snail when first infected. Snail demography and the age of snail infection could thus affect the force of i

Draft genome of Semisulcospira libertina, a species of freshwater snail.

Semisulcospira libertina, a species of freshwater snail, is widespread in East Asia. It is important as a food source. Additionally, it is a vector of clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, metagonimiasis, and other parasites. Although S. libertina has ecological, commercial, and clinical importance, its whole-genome has not been reported yet. Here, we revealed the genome of S. libertina through de novo assembly. We assembled the whole-genome of S. libertina and determined its transcriptome for the first time using Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. According to the k-mer analysis, the genome size of S.

Whole genome analysis of a schistosomiasis-transmitting freshwater snail.

Biomphalaria snails are instrumental in transmission of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. With the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate schistosomiasis as a global health problem by 2025, there is now renewed emphasis on snail control. Here, we characterize the genome of Biomphalaria glabrata, a lophotrochozoan protostome, and provide timely and important information on snail biology. We describe aspects of phero-perception, stress responses, immune function and regulation of gene expression that support the persistence of B. glabrata in the field and may define this species

The behavioral effects of antibiotic treatment on the snail Biomphalaria glabrata.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether capsaicin-sensitive nerves in the bladder form the afferent limb involved in autonomic dysreflexia (AD) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven men with SCI (five cervical cord, two thoracic cord) with AD and detrusor hyper-reflexia (DH) were enrolled. Under general anaesthesia, capsaicin solution (100 mL of 2 mmol/L in 10% ethanol) was instilled in the bladder and retained for 30 min. The patients were assessed by medium-fill cystometry (CMG) just before and 50 min after the capsaicin treatment. Intra-arterial blood pressure (BP
