Clinical and social burden of migraine in Japanese males: a cross-sectional comparison with females without menstrual migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is globally more prevalent in females; however, the clinical and social burden among males remains insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to describe the clinical features and social burden of migraine in Japanese males to identify sex-specific migraine profiles. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based web survey was conducted among Japanese adults aged ≥ 18 years diagnosed with migraine according to modified criteria from the International Classification of Headache Disorders, Third Edition (ICHD-3). Participants were grouped by sex; females diagnosed with m

Prepare to Compare: Effects of an Intervention Involving Upward and Downward Social Comparisons on Goal Pursuit in Daily Life.

In a preregistered ecological momentary intervention study, we alternately instructed participants to adopt an upward and downward comparison focus. In all, 349 participants reported 8,137 social comparison situations across 6 days and three comparison conditions (baseline, upward, downward). For each comparison, participants reported social comparison direction, motivation, effort intentions, and emotions in five daily reports and one daily end-of-day summary. As predicted, an upward comparison focus resulted in more self-improvement motivation (pushing) and more negative emotions, whereas da

Comparison of Demographic Characteristics and Social Determinants of Health Between Adults With Diagnosed HIV and All Adults in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: Quantifying disparities in social determinants of health between people with HIV and the total population could help address health inequities, and ensure health and well-being among people with HIV in the U.S., but estimates are lacking. METHODS: Several representative data sources were used to assess differences in social determinants of health between adults with diagnosed HIV (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Medical Monitoring Project) and the total adult population (U.S. Census Bureau's decennial census, American Community Survey, Household Pulse Survey, the Curr

Comparison of ketamine, 7,8-dihydroxyflavone, and ANA-12 antidepressant effects in the social defeat stress model of depression.

RATIONALE: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and signaling at its receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), are implicated in the rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effects of ketamine. Moreover, a TrkB agonist, 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF), and/or TrkB antagonist, ANA-12, shows antidepressant effects in animal models of depression. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to compare the influence of ketamine, 7,8-DHF, and ANA-12 on antidepressant activity in the social defeat stress model. RESULTS: In the tail suspension and forced swimming tests, ketamine, 7,8-DHF, or ANA

Social cognition and underlying cognitive mechanisms in children with an extra X chromosome: a comparison with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with an extra X chromosome are at increased risk for autism symptoms. This study is the first to assess theory of mind and facial affect labeling in children with an extra X chromosome. Forty-six children with an extra X chromosome (29 boys with Klinefelter syndrome and 17 girls with Trisomy X), 56 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 88 non-clinical controls, aged 9-18 years, were included. Similar to children with ASD, children with an extra X chromosome showed significant impairments in social cognition. Regression analyses showed that different cognitive functions p

Social status and health: a comparison of British civil servants in Whitehall-II with European- and African-Americans in CARDIA.

Socioeconomic status (SES) is related to health in every industrialized society where it has been studied. Indicators include educational attainment, occupational status, and income. Subjective social status (SSS), a summative judgment of one's socioeconomic position across these dimensions, also appears to be associated with health status. The current study examines whether SSS has similar associations with SES indicators and with health outcomes among British civil servants (participants in the Whitehall-II study), and U.S. whites and blacks (participants in the CARDIA study). The comparison

Cognitive bias via the Internet: a comparison of Web-based and standard emotional Stroop tasks in social phobia.

There is accumulating evidence to suggest that social phobia is associated with attentional bias for words related to social threat. Information processing in individuals with social phobia (n = 87) was investigated in the present study using 2 versions of the emotional Stroop task. Results from a standard emotional Stroop task indicated delayed colour naming of socially threatening words relative to neutral words, in line with previous research, whereas results from a Web-based emotional Stroop task indicated a facilitation effect, with faster manual indication of colour choice for socially t

Quality of life in anxiety disorders: a comparison of obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition that the anxiety disorders are disabling disorders associated with substantial morbidity and impaired quality of life (QOL). Nevertheless, there have been few studies comparing QOL across these conditions. SAMPLING AND METHODS: 337 outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 220), panic disorder (PD; n = 53), or social anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 64) were compared using a number of assessment scales to compare objective and subjective impairment in QOL. The association of QOL with symptom severity and comorbid depression was also assessed.

A comparison of students with learning disabilities to low achieving and higher achieving students on three dimensions of social competence.

Research continues to accumulate attesting to the fact that many children with learning disabilities are experiencing social difficulties in school. Nonetheless, it is also clear that achievement deficits, with or without the presence of a handicapping condition, are also related to social problems in the classroom. Several studies attempting to clarify the relative roles of handicapping condition and achievement in social adjustment have produced mixed results. The purpose of the present study was to clarify this issue further by examining the social differences between elementary school stud

Subjective social status and health of Saudi medical students: a cross-sectional study on the role of peer comparisons.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between peer subjective social status (SSS), a measure of perceived social position within social hierarchies, and health outcomes in a young adult population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, involving 390 undergraduate students aged 18 and older. Peer SSS was assessed using the validated MacArthur Scale, a 10-rung ladder representing perceived social standing relative to peers. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate associations between pe

A comparison of social drivers of health identification and intervention rates by sex among patients receiving primary care.

BACKGROUND: Social drivers of health (SDOH) significantly influence health behaviors and outcomes, yet sex-based disparities in these domains remain underexplored. Identifying these differences is essential for guiding equitable, evidence-based interventions. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health record (EHR) data from all patients with a documented male or female sex who had a primary care visit or inpatient stay at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024 (n = 493,920). SDOH screening responses were categorized as "affirmative" (at risk

The Role of Technology and Social Media Use in Human Papillomavirus Awareness: A Comparison Across Four Age Groups.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant public health crisis across various age groups. While technology and social media are crucial for disseminating health information, their potential remains underutilized due to varying levels of familiarity and comfort with digital platforms among different age groups. This study examines whether using technology and social media for health-related purposes predicts HPV awareness across different age demographics in the United States. METHOD: This cross-sectional study employed two datasets from the National Cancer Institute's Health Inf

Good luck or bad luck? The influence of social comparison on risk-taking decision and the underlying neural mechanism.

The present study aimed to investigate the impact of social comparison on risk-taking behaviors and the neural underpinnings within a competitive context. Participants who thought they were playing against a stranger in a gambling task were actually playing against a programmed computer. Eighty-eight college students were assigned to one of three comparison conditions (downward, upward, and parallel) by varying the probability of gain. Behavioral results showed that disadvantage led to increased risk-taking. Event-related potential data analyses showed, in the parallel comparison condition, a

Comparison of the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 among Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Williams Syndrome in Japan.

This study examined the similarities/differences between the social phenotypes of Williams syndrome (WS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As cultural norms may affect symptom evaluation, this study administered the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 to Japanese individuals with WS (n = 78, 4.4-44.0 years) and ASD (n = 75, 4.7-55.4 years). The scores for Social Motivation and Social Communication were significantly more severe in the ASD than WS group. Overall, the similarities and differences between the social phenotypes of the syndromes were consistent with the findings of a recent study condu

The Effect of Educational Interventions on Willingness to Work with Older Adults: A Comparison of Students of Social Work and Health Professions.

The study examined the effect of an educational intervention on the willingness of Israeli social work students to work with older adults, comparing them to students of nursing, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. A sample of 187 first-year students were divided into two groups: a research group (n=83) exposed to an educational intervention on ageing, and a control group (n=104) that received no intervention of any kind. Following the intervention, ageism among social work students in the research group decreased and positive behavior toward older adults increased. No significant differences we

Social Comparisons, Self-Conceptions, and Attributions: Assessing the Self-Related Contingencies in Leader-Member Exchange Relationships.

UNLABELLED: We propose a new summary measure of population health (SMPH), the well-being-adjusted health expectancy (WAHE). WAHE belongs to a subgroup of health-adjusted life expectancy indicators and gives the number of life years equivalent to full health. WAHE combines health and mortality information into a single indicator with weights that quantify the reduction in well-being associated with decreased health. WAHE's advantage over other SMPHs lies in its ability to differentiate between the consequences of health limitations at various levels of severity and its transparent, simple valua
