PURPOSE: This study analyse the adoption trajectory of assistive technology (AT) and its impacts on mobility independence and social participation-well-being among persons with disabilities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guideline, 80 empirical articles (2015-2025) from Scopus and Web of Science were synthesised using a three-dimensional scoring system: (1) the adoption trajectory, (2) mobility independence and (3) social participation-well-being.
RESULTS: AT adoption correlates strongly with functional mobility (ρ = 0.70), but only moderately with well-being (ρ = 0.58). T

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion is both cause and consequence of mental disorders. People with mental disorders (PWMD) are among the most socially excluded in all societies yet little is known about their experiences in North India. This qualitative study aims to describe experiences of exclusion and inclusion of PWMD in two rural communities in Uttar Pradesh, India.
METHODS: In-depth interviews with 20 PWMD and eight caregivers were carried out in May 2013. Interviews probed experiences of help-seeking, stigma, discrimination, exclusion, participation, agency and inclusion in their households a

PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents.
METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33).
RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion, whether due to physical isolation or the subjective perception of being ignored and unwanted, threatens the fundamental human need for social belonging and is experienced as social pain. While its detrimental effects on mood disorders are well documented, its impact on individuals living with chronic pain remains largely unexplored. This study investigates emotional responses to social exclusion in individuals with chronic pain (CPs) compared to healthy controls (HCs), considering the role of comorbid mood disturbances. It also examines whether behavioral and soci

HIV/AIDS stigma remains a global challenge, restricting healthcare access and reinforcing discrimination. This study examines how social media health promotion reduces HIV/AIDS stigma, focusing on the mediating role of multi-language campaigns and the moderating effect of emotional empathy. Using a cross-sectional survey of 659 social media users analyzed with PLS-SEM, the results show that social media health promotion significantly reduces stigma. Multi-language campaigns partially mediate this effect, highlighting the importance of linguistic inclusivity in health communication. Emotional e

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While older adults' social participation has attracted sustained attention, the realities faced by seniors with impairments in this area are still understudied. Social representations are formed from socially constructed opinions regarding a given object and have four functions (knowledge, identity, orientation, justification). The purpose of this article is to document the social representations that exist within seniors' organizations regarding participation by older people with impairments.

Societal prejudices shape the social positioning of students with intellectual disability in educational contexts. This study explores how social acceptance is produced and contested through everyday interactions influenced by stigma, cultural norms, and institutional practices. Drawing on Goffman's conceptualization of stigma and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems framework, social acceptance is treated as a relational and power-laden process rather than an individual trait. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers and parents of ch

Purpose In occupational rehabilitation, the biopsychosocial model endorses the role of social factors in worker recovery. We conducted a systematic review to explore three questions examining the role of social support for the return-to-work (RTW) of individuals with work-related injury: (1) What are the worker-identified social barriers and facilitators in RTW; (2) What is the relationship between social factors and RTW; and (3) What is the effectiveness of social interventions for RTW. Methods Systematic searches of six databases were conducted for each research question. These identified 11

As individuals age with HIV it is increasingly important to consider the health-related consequences of HIV and multiple morbidities, known as disability. We assessed relationships between four dimensions of disability among adults living with HIV. We conducted a structural equation modeling analysis using data from 913 participants in the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study to determine relationships between four latent variables of disability in the Episodic Disability Framework: physical symptoms and impairments, mental health symptoms and impairments, difficulties with day-to-day ac

Inclusion health groups make up a small proportion of the general population, so despite the extreme social exclusion and poor health outcomes that these groups experience, they are often overlooked in public health investment and policy development. In this paper, we demonstrate that a utilitarian argument can be made for investment in better support for inclusion health groups despite their small size. That is, by preventing social exclusion, there is the potential for large aggregate health benefits to the whole population. We illustrate this by reframing existing published mortality estima

BACKGROUND: Enhanced responsiveness to social rejection may be a transdiagnostic mechanism through which childhood emotional maltreatment predisposes individuals to interpersonal and mental health problems. To investigate this mechanism, as a first step, more detailed investigations are needed regarding the assumed association of childhood emotional maltreatment with rejection sensitivity in later life.
OBJECTIVE: The present work examines the hypothesis that among different subtypes of childhood maltreatment, in particular forms of emotional maltreatment (emotional abuse and neglect) relate

Cues of social rejection and affiliation represent proximal risk and protective factors in the onset and maintenance of depression. Such cues are thought to activate an evolutionarily primed neuro-cognitive alarm system, alerting the agent to the benefits of inclusion or the risk of social exclusion within social hierarchies focused on ensuring continued access to resources. In tandem, autobiographical memory is thought to be over-general and negatively biased in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) which can contribute to maintenance and relapse. How memories of social rejection and affiliation ar

BACKGROUND: Long-term recipients of social assistance face barriers to social and economic inclusion, and have poorer health and more limited opportunities for improving their health than many other groups in the population. During recent decades there have been changes in Swedish social policy, with cutbacks in public benefits and a re-emphasis on means-tested policies. In this context, it is important to investigate the necessary conditions for social workers to offer social assistance and services, as well as the mediating role of social workers between public policies and their clients. INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities are underrepresented in health professions education and practice. Barriers for inclusion include stigma, disabling discourses, discriminatory programme design and oppressive interactions. Current understandings of this topic remain descriptive and fragmented. Existing research often includes only one profession, excludes particular types of disability and focuses on one aspect of the career journey. To expand understanding, we examined the recurrent forms of social relations that underlie the participation of disabled individuals in learning and practice
