The differential role of verbal and spatial working memory in the neural basis of arithmetic.

We examine the relations of verbal and spatial working memory (WM) ability to the neural bases of arithmetic in school-age children. We independently localize brain regions subserving verbal versus spatial representations. For multiplication, higher verbal WM ability is associated with greater recruitment of the left temporal cortex, identified by the verbal localizer. For multiplication and subtraction, higher spatial WM ability is associated with greater recruitment of right parietal cortex, identified by the spatial localizer. Depending on their WM ability, children engage different neural

View-based organization and interplay of spatial working and long-term memories.

Space perception provides egocentric, oriented views of the environment from which working and long-term memories are constructed. "Allocentric" (i.e. position-independent) long-term memories may be organized as graphs of recognized places or views but the interaction of such cognitive graphs with egocentric working memories is unclear. Here we present a simple coherent model of view-based working and long-term memories, together with supporting evidence from behavioral experiments. The model predicts (i) that within a given place, memories for some views may be more salient than others, (ii)

Reference directions and reference objects in spatial memory of a briefly viewed layout.

Two experiments investigated participants' spatial memory of a briefly viewed layout. Participants saw an array of five objects on a table and, after a short delay, indicated whether the target object indicated by the experimenter had been moved. Experiment 1 showed that change detection was more accurate when non-target objects were stationary than when non-target objects were moved. This context effect was observed when participants were tested both at the original learning perspective and at a novel perspective. In Experiment 2, the arrays of five objects were presented on a rectangular tab

Effect of tooth loss on spatial memory and trkB-mRNA levels in rats.

The mechanism by which tooth loss accelerates spatial memory impairment is unknown. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that tooth loss affects trkB-mRNA levels and leads to an accelerated decrease in the hippocampal cell density in rats. A radial maze was used to evaluate the spatial memory of male Wistar rats that were categorized based on the number of extracted molar teeth. Number of hippocampal pyramidal cells and the trkB-mRNA expressions in the amygdala, perirhinal cortex, thalamus, and the hippocampal CA1, CA3, and CA4 areas, were evaluated using molecular biological t

Spatial encoding of a traumatic virtual reality scene reduces intrusive memories.

We tested whether enhanced allocentric spatial memory of a distressing scene can attenuate intrusive memories. Using virtual reality (VR), we developed an immersive trauma analog to measure and manipulate spatial memory. Study 1 (N = 92) established the paradigm's validity in eliciting intrusions and assessing spatial memory for scene-embedded objects. Results showed that spatial memory was better for more distressing objects and when participants were probed from the original encoding viewpoint, but memory performance did not differentiate egocentric from allocentric strategies or relate to i

Dissociation of spatial and contextual memory encoding under fear and pain in mice.

Negative emotional states strongly modulate memory formation, yet the relative contributions of spatial and contextual encoding under fear and pain remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we developed a modular three-chamber Y-maze paradigm that enables independent manipulation of spatial and contextual cues. Using this paradigm, we systematically compared memory encoding induced by foot-shock fear and formalin-evoked pain in mice. Behavioral analyses revealed that foot-shock supported the formation of composite aversive memories integrating both spatial and contextual features, such

Brain network signatures of spatial memory in adolescents at risk for substance use.

BACKGROUND: Examining youth before engagement in risky behaviors may help identify neurobiological signatures that prospectively predict susceptibility to initiating and escalating alcohol and other substance use. Given that frontal and medial temporal (e.g., hippocampal) regions continue developing during adolescence, identifying vulnerabilities in these systems is critical. METHODS: This study evaluated baseline brain activation during spatial memory performance using a virtual functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Morris water task (MWT). Participants were healthy, substance-naïve a

Hippocampal spatial view cells for memory and navigation, and their underlying connectivity in humans.

Hippocampal and parahippocampal gyrus spatial view neurons in primates respond to the spatial location being looked at. The representation is allocentric, in that the responses are to locations "out there" in the world, and are relatively invariant with respect to retinal position, eye position, head direction, and the place where the individual is located. The underlying connectivity in humans is from ventromedial visual cortical regions to the parahippocampal scene area, leading to the theory that spatial view cells are formed by combinations of overlapping feature inputs self-organized base

Translating words into actions in working memory: The role of spatial-motoric coding.

Research from a working memory perspective on the encoding and temporary maintenance of sequential instructions has established a consistent advantage for enacted over verbal recall. This is thought to reflect action planning for anticipated movements at the response phase. We describe five experiments investigating this, comparing verbal and enacted recall of a series of action-object pairings under different potentially disruptive concurrent task conditions, all requiring repetitive movements. A general advantage for enacted recall was observed across experiments, together with a tendency fo

Remote spatial and autobiographical memory in cases of episodic amnesia and topographical disorientation.

A number of theories have postulated that there is a strong relationship between episodic memory and spatial processes mediated by the hippocampus. Evidence for episodic amnesia following damage to the medial temporal lobes is extensive, but less is known about the types of spatial memory affected by damage to these regions. In this study, we compared episodic memory with detailed scene memory, landmark recognition and schematic (map-based) spatial memory in a group of individuals with amnesia related to damage to the medial temporal lobes (MTL) including the hippocampus. We compared their per

Spatial memory in Huntington's disease: A comparative review of human and animal data.

To improve the translational predictability of treatment strategies for Huntington's disease (HD), sensitive and analogous cognitive outcomes are needed across HD animal models and humans. Spatial memory measures are promising candidates because they are based on 'visual' or 'non-verbal' cognition, and are commonly tested in both animals and humans. Here, we consider the suitability of spatial memory for strengthening translational links between animals and humans in HD research and clinical trials. We describe findings of spatial memory impairments in human HD and mouse models, including whic

Autobiographical memory and the self in a single-case of chronic unilateral spatial neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is mainly defined as a condition affecting perception and the mental representation of the environment. However, nothing is known about its impact on the ability to mentally represent one's past and on personal identity. We addressed these questions in a case of chronic USN, DR, a 59-year-old right-handed woman, who underwent a variety of measures exploring the self and autobiographical memory (AM). DR showed preserved self-images and her AM performance was only preserved when memories were prompted by her own self-images and not by self-unrelated cues. Our fin

Spatial and temporal dynamics of cortical networks engaged in memory encoding and retrieval.

Memory operations such as encoding and retrieval require the coordinated interplay of cortical regions with distinct functional contributions. The mechanistic nature of these interactions, however, remains unspecified. During the performance of a face memory task during fMRI scanning, we measured the magnitude (a measure of the strength of coupling between areas) and phase (a measure of the relative timing across areas) of coherence between regions of interest and the rest of the brain. The fusiform face area (FFA) showed robust coherence with a distributed network of subregions in the prefron

The effects of ethanol and silymarin treatment during gestation on spatial working memory.

BACKGROUND: Using a rat model we have found that the bioflavonoid silymarin (SY) ameliorates some of the negative consequences of in utero exposure to ethanol (EtOH). In the current study our aim was to determine if spatial working memory (SWM) was impaired in offspring whose mothers were maintained on a liquid diet containing EtOH during different gestational weeks. We also determined if SWM was altered with a concomitant administration of SY with EtOH during specific gestational weeks. METHODS: We provided pregnant Fischer/344 rats with liquid diets containing 35% EtOH derived calories (EDC

Object-recognition and spatial learning and memory in rats prenatally exposed to ethanol.

Prenatal ethanol exposure can produce cognitive and behavioral impairments. In the present study, rats from prenatal ethanol (E), pair-fed (PF), and ad libitum-fed control (C) treatment conditions were tested on the object-recognition delayed-nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS) task with nonrecurring items and on the spatial-navigation Morris water maze task. In Experiment 1, there were no significant differences among groups in object-recognition learning and memory, distractibility, or response perseveration on the DNMS task. In Experiment 2, the same rats were tested in the water maze; E rats took

Effects of cholinergic and monoaminergic antagonists and tranquilizers upon spatial memory in rats.

To explore the pharmacological mechanisms of the spatial memory, performance on the radial arm maze was tested in rats under the following drugs, using a within-subject design; scopolamine (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg), methylscopolamine (0.5 and 1 mg/kg), phentolamine (5 and 10 mg/kg), propranolol (10 and 20 mg/kg), chlorpromazine (1 and 2 mg/kg), and chlordiazepoxide (5 and 10 mg/kg). The number of correct choices was significantly decreased by scopolamine, while the other drugs, including methylscopolamine, showed no effects on the correct choices. Almost all drugs affected the running time. These f

The role of spatial store and executive strategy in spatial working memory: a comparison between patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and controls.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) showed impaired spatial working memory (SWM). We evaluated whether patients and healthy controls (HCs) differed in spatial store capacity, and whether they differed in the relative weight of spatial store capacity and/or executive strategy in SWM. METHODS: Thirty inpatients with OCD and 31 age- and education-matched HCs underwent the CANTAB SWM, SRM (a measure of spatial store). The severity of OC symptoms was assessed using the Y-BOCS. Statistical significance: α = 0.05. RESULTS: Patients showed poorer performance than HCs in a

Retinotopic Spatial Working Memory Representations Are Not Affected by Task-irrelevant Visual Stimuli.

Visual working memory (WM) enables the maintenance and manipulation of information no longer accessible in the world. Previous research has identified spatial WM representations in sustained activation patterns in visual, parietal, and frontal cortex, while MEG/EEG studies have additionally supported a role for "activity-silent" mechanisms revealed by transient reactivation or amplification of an existing representation by a task-irrelevant "ping" stimulus. In natural vision, the delay period between encoding information into WM and its use to guide behavior is rarely "empty," as is the case i

Distinct and shared neural resources for dynamic object processing and spatial working memory.

In human brains, portions of the frontoparietal cortex respond when people reason about the physical world (e.g. track objects, make predictions), and when people engage in a variety of demanding tasks (e.g. working memory, motor inhibition). Here, we use functional neuroimaging to address an open question about whether the same neural resources support both mental functions. Twenty-eight human adults (Mage = 26.5 years; 17 female; 26 right handed) were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they (i) tracked the dynamics of physical objects (vs social agents), and (ii
