Detection of Pathologic Heart Murmurs Using a Piezoelectric Sensor.

This study aimed to evaluate the capability of a piezoelectric sensor to detect a heart murmur in patients with congenital heart defects. Heart sounds and murmurs were recorded using a piezoelectric sensor and an electronic stethoscope in healthy neonates (n = 9) and in neonates with systolic murmurs caused by congenital heart defects (n = 9) who were born at a hospital. Signal data were digitally filtered by high-pass filtering, and the envelope of the processed signals was calculated. The amplitudes of systolic murmurs were evaluated using the signal-to-noise ratio and compared between healt

Signs of depth and danger. 1962.

A large proportion of the serious complications that occur during pediatric anesthesia are caused by failure to recognize early signs of danger. The greatest dangers include excessive anesthetic depth, respiratory obstruction and depression, acid-base derangement, shock, myocardial depression, and extreme alterations in body temperature. Simple monitoring devices, including the anesthetic chart, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and thermometer, are essential in all major pediatric procedures. Use of the stethoscope should never be omitted in any case. Signs of cardiorespiratory and neuromuscu

Cardiac auscultation: rediscovering the lost art.

Cardiac auscultation, long considered the centerpiece of the cardiac clinical examination, is rapidly becoming a lost art. Inadequate emphasis on the essentials of cardiac auscultation has resulted from the widespread availability of more elaborate and expensive "high-tech" diagnostic and therapeutic methods, particularly Doppler echocardiography. However, sophisticated high technology is not a substitute for a solid foundation in clinical cardiology including cardiac auscultation. When used properly, the stethoscope remains a valuable and cost-effective clinical tool that often enables many w

Using voice-recognition technology to eliminate cardiac cycle segmentation in automated heart sound diagnosis.

Advanced digital signal processing has the potential to revolutionize the stethoscope through the use of mathematical algorithms to interpret heart sound acoustic information. In this study, a novel classification algorithm that does not require cardiac cycle segmentation was used for identifying differences between normal and diseased heart sounds. The heart sound signals were not separated into systole and diastole. A recordable electronic stethoscope was used to record the heart sounds of 163 echocardiogram patients. Mel-cepstrum and Principal Components Analysis were applied to the 60 reco

Acoustics based assessment of respiratory diseases using GMM classification.

The focus of this paper is to present a method utilizing lung sounds for a quantitative assessment of patient health as it relates to respiratory disorders. In order to accomplish this, applicable traditional techniques within the speech processing domain were utilized to evaluate lung sounds obtained with a digital stethoscope. Traditional methods utilized in the evaluation of asthma involve auscultation and spirometry, but utilization of more sensitive electronic stethoscopes, which are currently available, and application of quantitative signal analysis methods offer opportunities of improv

Accuracy of analog telephonic stethoscopy for pediatric telecardiology.

OBJECTIVE: Wide-bandwidth electronic stethoscopy is reliable and accurate for pediatric telecardiology. We tested a much less expensive and more convenient system for the same purpose, a narrow-bandwidth telephonic stethoscope (TS). METHODS: Seventy-six consecutive patients (mean age: 10.0; standard deviation: 6.5 years) in a pediatric cardiology outpatient clinic were studied. One pediatric cardiologist examined the patients with his acoustic stethoscope (AS); a second examined them within a few minutes using a remote TS. A nurse placed the TS chest piece as directed by the remote examiner v

Bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates from inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care, which is a major public health issue in hospitals worldwide. The prevalence is two to three folds higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals such as gowns, mobile phones, and stethoscopes are highly prone to bacterial contamination from the healthcare setting. In Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published data on the bacterial profile and susceptibility patterns of an isolates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the bacterial profile and antimicrobial

Electrostatic Acoustic Sensor with an Impedance-Matched Diaphragm Characterized for Body Sound Monitoring.

Acoustic sensors are able to capture more incident energy if their acoustic impedance closely matches the acoustic impedance of the medium being probed, such as skin or wood. Controlling the acoustic impedance of polymers can be achieved by selecting materials with appropriate densities and stiffnesses as well as adding ceramic nanoparticles. This study follows a statistical methodology to examine the impact of polymer type and nanoparticle addition on the fabrication of acoustic sensors with desired acoustic impedances in the range of 1-2.2 MRayls. The proposed method using a design of experi

Hemopneumothorax detection through the process of artificial evolution - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Tension pneumothorax is one of the leading causes of preventable death on the battlefield. Current prehospital diagnosis relies on a subjective clinical impression complemented by a manual thoracic and respiratory examination. These techniques are not fully applicable in field conditions and on the battlefield, where situational and environmental factors may impair clinical capabilities. We aimed to assemble a device able to sample, analyze, and classify the unique acoustic signatures of pneumothorax and hemothorax. METHODS: Acoustic data was obtained with simultaneous use of two

Percussion--a new way to diagnose a pneumothorax.

We describe a new clinical sign in a case series of three patients who developed pneumothoraces during mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit. All three patients were in the supine position. Two patients had x-rays that were inconclusive before insertion of chest drains and the third had a pneumothorax diagnosed on clinical findings alone. On each occasion we were able to diagnose pneumothorax using sternal percussion and simultaneous auscultation. The method relies on percussion of the sternum while simultaneously ausculating the anterior (superior) chest on the side of the suspect

[Case of submucosal hematoma of the esophagus noticed postoperatively].

We experienced a case of submucosal hematoma of the esophagus noticed after cervical anterior spinal fusion (ASF) between C7 and T1 for ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). The patient was a 68-year-old man, and no abnormality was found in the preoperative examinations. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with remifentanil, propofol and vecuronium. Tracheal intubation was performed using fiberscope uneventfully, and gastric tube and esophageal stethoscope were inserted into the esophagus smoothly. The operation was completed in 7 hours and 10 minutes. When we removed the g
