Pesticide exposure during fetal life can lead to low birth weight and is commonly observed in reproductive toxicology studies. Associations have also been found in low birth weight babies born from pesticide-exposed gardeners. Since low birth weight is also linked to metabolic disorders, it can be speculated that early life exposure to pesticides could increase the risk of becoming obese or developing diabetes later in life. The eczematogenic effects of tetramethylthiuramidsulfid and of mercaptobenzothiazol were studied on the basis of an inquiry in establishments using TMTD and MBT, a frequency analysis of positive reactions of our standard series in 1971 and testing of various rubber articles on sensitized persons as well as animal experiments. The results indicate a wider use, a higher percentage of positive epicutaneous tests and also a higher sensitizing potency in the animal test of the TMTD as compared with MBT. MBT was removed from our standard series.

Dithiocarbamates are used as pesticides and rubber additives. Dithiocarbamates are the reduced forms of thiuram disulfides and both of these groups of substances induce allergic contact dermatitis. Because of the occurrence of hand dermatitis in members of a surgical staff due to allergy to thiuram-containing rubber gloves, an investigation was performed about cross-sensitization between thiuram compounds and dithiocarbamates. BACKGROUND: Accelerators in rubber gloves can cause contact allergy. Although rubber gloves mostly contain dithiocarbamates, for example, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDEC), patients react more frequently to thiurams, for example, tetraethylthiuram disulphide (TETD) in patch testing. An outbreak of dermatitis among patients in a hemodialysis unit was traced to thiuram compounds, most likely coming from the hemodialysis apparatus itself. Eight of the 21 patients in the facility had allergic contact sensitivity to various thiuram compounds. Testing of patients from other hemodialysis units, in which different hemodialysis equipment was used, did not disclose sensitivity or dermatitis. In the affected patients, allergic contact sensitization of the skin probably resulted from the systemic circulation of an antigen during hemodialysis.
