The relative contributions of phonological awareness and vocabulary knowledge to deaf and hearing children's reading fluency in Chinese.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether phonological awareness and vocabulary knowledge are independent predictors of reading fluency for deaf children in different grades. AIMS: This study examined the relative contributions of phonological awareness and vocabulary knowledge to Chinese deaf children's reading fluency in grades 3-4 (lower grades; mean age 14.08 years) and 5-6 (higher grades; mean age 15.05 years). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: One hundred and forty-one deaf children and 163 hearing children were enrolled. All children completed assessments of general cognitive ability, onset and tone aw

Development of a vocabulary of object shapes in a child with a very-early-acquired visual agnosia: a unique case.

We report a longitudinal study of an exceptional child (S.R.) whose early-acquired visual agnosia, following encephalitis at 8 weeks of age, did not prevent her from learning to construct an increasing vocabulary of visual object forms (drawn from different categories), albeit slowly. S.R. had problems perceiving subtle differences in shape; she was unable to segment local letters within global displays; and she would bring complex scenes close to her eyes: a symptom suggestive of an attempt to reduce visual crowding. Investigations revealed a robust ability to use the gestalt grouping factors

OVR-GS: Open-Vocabulary 3D Object Removal via Semantic Gaussian Selection and Local Diffusion-Guided Completion.

Camera-reconstructed 3D scenes often require offline visual cleanup before inspection, presentation, or reuse as renderable virtual-scene assets. Representative applications include removing temporary furniture, parked vehicles, equipment, signage, and other distracting or obsolete objects from reconstructed indoor and outdoor environments. Such editing requires not only accurate target localization across viewpoints but also plausible recovery of the previously occluded background. Existing methods often depend on manually specified masks or category-restricted detectors, while projection-bas

Etiology of hearing loss affects auditory skill development and vocabulary development in pediatric cochlear implantation cases.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation (CI) is an effective treatment for severe-to-profound hearing loss patients and is currently used as the standard therapeutic option worldwide. However, the outcomes of CI vary among patients. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the clinical features for each etiological group as well as the effects of etiology on CI outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected clinical information for 308 pediatric cochlear implant cases, including the etiology, hearing thresholds, age at CI, early auditory skill development, total development, monosyllable percep

Factors affecting vocabulary acquisition at age 2 in children born between 23 and 28 weeks' gestation.

Language development is often slower in preterm children compared with their term peers. We investigated factors associated with vocabulary acquisition at 2 years in a cohort of children born at 28 weeks' gestation or less. For children entered into the United Kingdom Oscillation Study, language development was evaluated by using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories score, completed by parents as part of a developmental questionnaire. The effect of demographic, neonatal, socioeconomic factors, growth, and disability were investigated using multifactorial random effects mod

Prenatal Volume in the Bilateral Superior Temporal Gyrus Associates With Children's Expressive Vocabulary at 24-36 Months.

Children's language development starts in utero, with language-relevant brain areas starting to develop and differentiate during the second trimester of pregnancy. Postnatal development in language-relevant brain areas such as the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and superior temporal gyrus (STG) has been shown to be related to language skills. In this study, as part of the Cambridge Human Imaging and Longitudinal Development (CHILD) project, prenatal structural characteristics of the IFG and STG (30th - 33rd GW) and their association with English children's language skills, obtained longitudinall

Associations between receptive and expressive vocabulary and early literacy in young students with intellectual disabilities using AAC.

PURPOSE: This study examined the associations between receptive and expressive vocabulary and early literacy skills (i.e., phonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge) among 39 students aged 6-14 years with intellectual disabilities, autism, and/or Down syndrome who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Receptive and expressive vocabulary are identified as a key risk factor for developing reading skills in students with intellectual disabilities who use AAC. METHODS: Spearman's correlation analyses and generalized linear models were conducted throughout this non-experime

Non-word repetition and vocabulary in Kuwaiti Arabic-speaking children with down syndrome and typically developing children.

OVERVIEW: Non-word repetition (NWR) is one of the most effective predictors of language impairments in children as it has been found to correlate with various language measures and the association between NWR and vocabulary is well documented in typically developing (TD) studies. However, there is a dire need for investigations of language skills in Kuwaiti Arabic individuals with Down Syndrome, and this study set out to fill a gap in this field. METHOD: In this paper, we compare the vocabulary and NWR skills of a group of 48 individuals with DS aged 6-20 years to a group of 44 TD children ag

Sex Differences in Sentiment-Scored Vocabulary Patterns in VAERS Free-Text Narratives of Four Major Vaccine Categories.

Free-text narratives in vaccine adverse event reports contain symptom descriptions and contextual wording that can be characterized using text mining. However, lexicon-based sentiment scores in medical narratives should be interpreted as vocabulary patterns rather than direct measures of patients' emotional states. We evaluated sex-specific and vaccine-specific patterns in sentiment-scored and emotion-category assignment vocabulary in Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) narratives for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV), and measles-mumps-rubel

Explaining the Comprehension-Production Vocabulary Gap Through Neural Networks and Cross-Syndrome Evidence: Insights From Williams Syndrome.

The comprehension-production vocabulary gap is a well-documented hallmark of language development; however, anecdotal evidence suggests that this asymmetry may be reduced in children with Williams syndrome (WS). Here, we use empirical data to characterise the comprehension-production gap and computational modelling to investigate potential mechanisms underlying this distinctive linguistic profile, focusing on children aged 7 months to 6 years. Using parental reports (Communicative Development Inventories), we measured the receptive and expressive vocabularies of children with WS (n = 67) and c

Beyond the language network: Associations between reading, receptive vocabulary, and grey matter volume in 10-year-olds.

Most research on the neurostructural basis of language abilities in children stems from small samples and surface-based measures. To complement and expand the existent knowledge, we investigated associations between grey matter volume and language performance in a large sample of 9-to-11-year-old children, using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 1865) and an alternative measure of grey matter morphology. We estimated whole-brain grey matter volume for one half of the sample (N = 939) and tested for correlations with scores on a picture vocabulary and a lett

The Correlation between Chinese Written Vocabulary Size and Cognitive, Emotional and Behavioral Factors in Primary School Students.

Written vocabulary size plays a key role in children's reading development. We aim to study the relationship between Chinese written vocabulary size and cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors in primary school students. Using stratified cluster sampling, 1162 pupils from Grade 2~5 in Guangzhou were investigated. Chinese written vocabulary size, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors were assessed by the Chinese written vocabulary size assessment scale, the dyslexia checklist for Chinese children (DCCC) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), respectively. The scores

Patient-provider comparison of dermatology vocabulary understanding: a cross-sectional study in patients from minority ethnic groups.

Patient-centered communication is necessary for a successful clinical relationship. There has been great interest in improving communication within the field of dermatology. To identify gaps between patient comprehension of dermatology-specific vocabulary and perceived comprehension by providers. Two hundred and eighty-five patients were recruited from outpatient dermatology clinics at Boston Medical Center and East Boston Neighborhood Health Center to complete a multiple choice survey regarding comprehension of dermatology-specific vocabulary. Participating patients were 59.6% female, with ag

Influence of Child-Level Factors and Lexical Characteristics on Vocabulary Knowledge of Children With Cochlear Implants and Hearing Aids.

Recent studies indicate children who are deaf and hard of hearing who use cochlear implants or hearing aids know fewer spoken words than their peers with typical hearing, and often those vocabularies differ in composition. To date, however, the interaction of a child's auditory profile with the lexical characteristics of words he or she knows has been minimally explored. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate how audiological history, phonological memory, and overall vocabulary knowledge interact with growth in types of spoken words known by children who are deaf and hard of hearing c

Elementary Teachers' Intervention Fidelity in Relation to Reading and Vocabulary Outcomes for Students at Risk for Reading-Related Disabilities.

Teachers' implementation of differentiated supplemental instruction is critical to help students with or at risk for reading-related disabilities acquire early reading and vocabulary skills. This study represents an initial investigation of whether classroom teachers' intervention fidelity (exposure, adherence, and quality) of targeted reading instruction (TRI, formerly called targeted reading intervention), a professional development program with embedded student intervention and weekly webcam literacy coaching support, was related to spring reading and oral vocabulary gains for students at r

Multisensory integration and maternal sensitivity are related to each other and predictive of expressive vocabulary in 24-month-olds.

Multisensory integration (MSI) is the ability to combine temporally synchronous, amodally specified sensory information to create rich, coordinated perceptual experiences. In early development, attention is directed toward such information in both social contexts (e.g., human speakers) and nonsocial contexts (e.g., multimodal toys). Parenting behaviors may support and sculpt multisensory integration by providing children with opportunities to experience amodally specified information (e.g., contingent face-to-face interactions). This study examined (a) whether 24-month-olds' MSI abilities diff
